Wines that were "winners" to us at the tasting: 1. Chardonnay: If you like white burgundy style whites...this will be perfect. Probably my favorite of the night. Try this next to a $150 bottle of Montrachet white burgundy....you might like this more. 2. Sparkling Wine: Legally, can't be called champagne, but it should as it is make in the exact style of French Champagne makers. Very dry. Light. Has an awesome nose/bouquet. Loved it. Going to buy 12 bottles for the holidays. 60% the price of Veuve Clicquot and more enjoyable. 3. Viognier: If you don't know this grape...get to know it. Fantastic. I would drink this every week with chicken//sea food. Perfect. One of the best I have ever had. 4. Pinot: OK...one "sore spot" here so you dont all think this is a "PR" note for the owners. The bottle was tainted...not drinkable. I'm sure this happens from time to time. That said, I connected with the winery and the promised to to replace. Exactly what I would expect. Looking forward to trying this wine. I love all the Napa wineries....Del Dotto, Martin Estates, Gamble, Taylor Family. Nice to find high quality wine coming out of this Region. The small wine tasting building is open Saturdays & Sundays from Noon to 5:00 p.m. For $10, you can taste 5 wines. The wine steward was generally educational and helpful describing each pour. We sat outside at a small table to enjoy the breeze. There were four of us in our party that day and Heisen House was the only winery where none of us bought any bottles. The old barn (built by Alexander Heisen over 120 years ago) and Victorian-style home (built by Henry Heisen in 1898) are visible from the wine tasting area. There is great potential for the Winery to utilize those buildings and it was reported that restoration work is underway. Heisen House Vineyards makes a variety of wines and is worthy of annual visits to see if the wines or experience have improved. Since it is just 40-minutes from Portland and near Battle Ground Lake there are plenty of reasons to include it in a circuit of Clark County wineries.

I've been visiting here a dozen times a year for four decades. There are a few eateries here. Many seem to come and go although there are a couple that have survived the test of time. RM38 is a newcomer... used to be in a small building with VERY limited hours. I gather their main biz was brewing craft beer for a very small clientele of businesses and the "saloon" was mostly a side hustle to help pay the rent. So I see they moved into new digs down at the marina. I won't take off any stars for the following since this seems to be their new business model: Offering uber-expensive, skimpy portions of not especially tasty food targeted to yuppies who have more money than brains. Suffice to say that you won't see many Bikers hanging out here. The good: Their patio has a nice river view and a pleasant breeze. Sitting out there enjoying a cold one on a hot Summer day is very pleasant. And during the Fall too so long as it's not raining. People complain about the lack of parking which is not an issue when you show up on a motorcycle. But there are LOTS of places to park although you may have to walk a few yards... you poor darlings. Staff is less than amazing but they are always courteous towards me. I suppose I am no more their dream customer than they are my dream hangout. But Bikers tend to be very generous tippers so they might want to keep that in mind. There's one long-established watering hole in Cathlamet but it's a dark, indoor venue. I like it there and it's more of a dive bar with very good food. The thing about Cathlamet is that if you are just an occasional visitor you have many options of where to stop for a meal and/or drink and never get bored. There's also a few good places at the other end of the ferry ride in Westport, Oregon. Hard to say how long RM38 will stay in business. I'm actually surprised that they lasted in their original location for so long considering that they were only open for a few hours during the weekend. It would be great if they quit pretending to be an upscale eatery and instead focused on providing a good value, tasty, filling meal for the money. Again, no minus stars for that but until new management comes along and makes some changes it will just be a pint or two for me and i'm on my way. Of course as always YMMV.

Thanks to a conversation with a gentleman at another vineyard, Stavalaura came highly recommended for their big reds, and they didn't disappoint ! They are fabulous. Stavalaura is just 30 minutes from Portland, with an environment that feels like hundreds of miles away, it's the perfect way to escape the city and spend a leisurely Saturday or Sunday afternoon. They serve small samples of cheese and meats with the wine. You can bring your own snacks, which I really appreciate, and have a picnic along with their wines. Looking forward to the warmer spring weather so I can spend an afternoon on the patio sipping away.
