Baxter Avenue Theater is by far my theater of choice when I see a movie. It's not as big as the multiplexes elsewhere, but the variety of movies, convenience and just general vibe make it easily 5 stars. I also love how consistent Baxter Avenue is. I've gone several times since I last wrote my review in 2018 and can report it holds up! Some things I love: * Easy to get tickets online! I've done this a few times now, which makes getting to my screen a breeze. * The big comfy, reclining seats! * The bar! Yep, get a drink before your movie starts ... but just be warned that you may have to make a bathroom run part of the way through your flick. * The helpful staff! I haven't come across anyone at Baxter who hasn't been helpful. Add to this the discounted tickets on Tuesdays and mix of blockbusters and indie movies and it's a local theater that should be treasured. And I mean treasured! It's come out that the shopping center that houses the theater is up for sale. I really, really hope nothing happens to the theater! Baxter is a theater we can't lose! read more

This is my favorite place to see a movie. It's only a short drive from my house and located in the popular Highlands neighborhood. Prices are pretty reasonable and they have reclining seats. We saw the new Wicked movie. The movie itself was not as good as the previous one.That aside we now have the bad news that new ownership of the mall complex has led to the theatre to close down for good this December 31, 2025. Now nearly 30 years of the only independent movie theater in the city will cease to exist. read more

As non-big-box movie theaters go, this one was bigger and nicer than most, with reclining seats and a selection that included both some big Hollywood movies (very few of which are worth spending money on in this era) but also some of the smaller art house flicks that are harder to find. I stumbled into a reasonably interesting foreign film that I hadn't heard of. Parking and getting a ticket was easy enough, the matinee price not bad, and the location, while you couldn't see it from the strip of restaurants on Bardstown Road, is certainly in a place where you have dinner and a movie options aplenty. read more

Baxter Avenue Theatres is a classic. Literally any time I want to see a new movie I hit up Baxter Avenue. The reclining seats are superb and I like the themed cocktails for the movies they show. Concessions are pretty decent and service is always friendly. Probably not the absolute best screen quality in town, but the nostalgia makes up for it and the prices are hard to beat, specially if you attend a matinee. I love coming to see newly released horror movies and feel like the ambience adds to the experience. read more

Really great theater. Lovely design, and the prices are fantastic. A small popcorn - 4.00! Incredible price. And it's good popcorn (way better than the over priced stuff at any Xscape theater). On Tuesdays tickets are about 6 bucks. Decent pricing. Next to the theater there's a ramen place so if you hungry you can walk right over there for dinner. Lots of parking space, not tremendously crowded, clean bathrooms. A bar. The place could definitely use more seating but other than that I was pretty satisfied. read more

I've never been to this theater before since I don't live near this one. But I also don't go much to the movies. I just watch it once it's streaming somewhere. I bought my ticket online just in case! Came with a bunch of friends for the Tuesday deals! Cheapest popcorn I've ever seen! My sister got a medium and it must've been almost 4 bucks? Shocking! It's usually much more expensive elsewhere! We watched Shang-Chi! Loved the movie and that the theater has so much space between the rows. It's those comfy chairs where you can recline and put your feet up. Parking was almost too easy! Baxter Avenue Theaters always makes for a great experience. The local theater holds first run, foreign, and indie films and a discount day ($5.75/ticket on Tuesday's.) For our most recent visit, we made it in to see Guardians of the Galaxy 3 on a Sunday afternoon. The theater is super accessible, and although it was likely 70% filled, the layout of the space doesn't let you feel crowded. Listen, I know I'm not playing with a full deck--I know I've been working an early morning shift on like 4 hours of sleep everyday, but I've never felt more humiliated and alienated by an employee in my entire life. I spent the whole day thinking it was Thursday. I was so excited to see Superman. I went to the theater, went to the box office, bought a ticket, bought a soda, entered the hallway--never being stopped or advised by an employee before arriving at the auditorium confused as to why How To Train Your Dragon was playing in Auditorium 4. I asked a nearby employee, "Sir, where is Superman playing?" He looks at me like I'm the dumbest person he's ever seen. He saunters over disheveled, appearing like the avatar of r/atheism. "Superman isn't playing today. Today is Wednesday. The first showing is Thursday." My entire reality comes crashing down. Up to this point, everything that has happened has mostly been my fault. Here is where it takes a turn. You could have gotten off Scot Free, theater. I go, "I'm sorry. I'm very tired and in my state, it appears I've gotten the days confused." He looks at me with a smug sense of superiority. "I work the night shift. I'm tired all the time, but I've never gotten the dates confused." ALL HAIL OUR NEW GOD FOR THIS MAN IS PERFECT! I furrow my brow. Where is his empathy for his fellow man? Where is the customer service? He continues to admonish me. "This is the first time this has ever happened to me." He says clearly embracing schadenfreude. I squint my eyes. "You've never had someone make a mistake?" He laughs in my face. "And gotten this far? No." I turn and sulk my way out of this palace of judgement, my Diet Coke being my only comfort. I still have the ticket, but will I return? How could I? This is a unique and fun little theater for everyone to visit if they are trying to watch a maybe not so popular movie or main stream movie. How many of those as well but they are also known for a lot of Indy films and Oscar winner movies that movie don't get picked up by a lot of theaters. I want to review this theater a 5, almost everything about this place is great, the popcorn, the seats recline more than most theaters (although the leather is cracking and wearing off) the staff is always friendly. However, they keep the lights on during the movie. They are dimmed, but not turned all the way down. If you sit in the middle it is less noticeable, but if you are on the sides it is horrible. My eyes were hurting so much by the end of the movie. Because it wasn't as dark most people were talking and treating it like watching a movie at home on Netflix. NOBODY was whispering. People were on their phones. I will probably not be going back. The lighting really ruined the whole experience. read more

I pick this theatre more than I pick any other place. I love that the theatre. It is much smaller and all the seats are lounge chairs. The chairs are leather, adjustable and has a tray. Since it is a small theatre, the rows are on an incline rather than you having to go up stairs to get to each row. It's also locally owned which makes it even better. Very small staff but makes sense since it is a smaller place. They do not show every single new movie that is at a bigger theatre as well. They are selective but not sure how they select what they show. Maybe based on their clientele. The cool thing that has been added over the years is a bar. It is very limited though to beer and some wines, so don't think you are going to get something extravagant but it makes do. The concession stand items are much cheaper than other places although not a large selection of things. Typical popcorn, nachos, hot dogs and drinks. No hamburgers, etc. There is also a candy section where you can put different candies in a bag and then weigh it. That's a nifty feature of this theatre and another thing that makes them stand out from the rest. read more

This theatre is nice and it is small. They have been known to show films that other theatres don't have. They've recently remodeled so it's nicer inside than it had been. They have what you'd expect from a movie theatre in 2017. You can pay at a counter or you can pay at a kiosk. They offer a concession stand with the food, drinks, and slow service you'd expect - every movie theatre has a concession stand that offers slow service. As an aside I'd love, love, love for a movie theatre to have a "popcorn and drink only" line so the people ordering food that takes extra time and talking can take their time and the rest of us can get our carbs and go. I'm always in a hurry. This is a nice little theatre but it doesn't stand out in any way that makes it a five-star theatre. You will have a decent experience, pretty much what you'd expect. read more

Great movie theater with a healthy dose of independent flair. They've done a commendable job keeping prices reasonable over the years, it's an aesthetically pleasing facility and the bar has better options than competing theaters - particularly as far as craft beer is concerned. The only possible issue with coming here is that movie showings tend to sell out quick. I strongly recommend buying tickets ahead of time, especially if you're seeing a new release. Baxter Avenue. Wow. Lookit you. There was a time in the Louisville movie scene where everything was clearly delineated. Showcase was where you went to see the big budget, popular movies. Village 8 was where you went to see them eight months after they came out (for a dollar or two). The Vogue was where you went to see foreign art films and feel a lot smarter than everyone else. And, Baxter Avenue was where you went to see American indies and feel smarter than everyone else... except those who frequented the Vogue. And, then things changed. The Vogue closed. Showcase closed. Tinseltown opened. Stony Book started getting more traffic. Village 8 started getting movies that were only a few months old. But Baxter stayed the same. But now it's changed. Gone is the 'I only watch independent film' snobbery old schoolers used to relish. You can now come to Baxter Avenue and see all the big, first-run films you can handle. On my most recent visit, I saw the cutout for Aquaman. So, there's that. BUT you can now relax in the splendor of soft (faux?) leather reclining seats and sip on booze. Both of these things make the movie-going experience exactly what you need it to be. The smaller size of the theaters and the increased size of the seats means that there aren't as many butts in the room but it also means you have more room and you aren't sitting on top of your neighbor. So arrive early and get your seat and be done with it. And, don't talk. Talking during a movie is obnoxious but to do so in such a small screening room is intolerable. Also, don't come late expecting to sit next to your friend/spouse/bff. I witnessed two groups of late comers try to whine their way to side-by-side seating and they were turned down time and again. They must have been new to Louisville. These old Highlands hippies don't play around. I ate my popcorn and sipped my beverage, gleefully taking in the show before my movie. I do not go to movie theaters often. So this was my first time at baxter. My husband, children and I decided to head to Baxter on a Tuesday afternoon to watch Toy Story 4. Upon entering, it's obvious this is not a huge movie theater, and frankly-that's okay with me. We quickly paid for out tickets. Tuesday tickets are $5.75. Which is an amazing deal for families. We bought popcorn, and a pack of m&ms, and headed to the theater. The common area of baxter(outside of the individual theaters) was exceptionally clean. I found the theater to be clean, and the reclining seats were a plus. Also a plus, the women's restroom was very clean. I enjoyed my visit to baxter, and will be returning. read more

I go to see about 3 blockbusters a year, and if it weren't for Baxter Avenue Theaters, that number might be closer to zero. Why? - You don't have to drive to a suburban cineplex. - Prices are completely reasonable. - 8 good-sized screens and reclining seats are awesome. I wish they carried more indy films, but a lot of those seem to end up at Village 8, which is a worse facility in a worse location. But (hot tip) for the more artistic stuff, the new theater at the Speed museum is really stepping up. Otherwise, they don't serve good beer or scratch the middle of my back when I need it, but I'll give them a pass. read more

Yowza, I was much more impressed with this theatre than I thought I would be!! I did not realize how upgraded this theatre was. I was always under the impression that it was more on the cheaply-made side of things, but I guess BAT got a full on glow up! There are a lot of things to like about this theatre: - cheap tickets (with even cheaper options for Tuesdays and matinees) - the huge parking lot - self service ticket machines - Small theatres with the BEST reclining seats (Where the headrest reclines back too...almost to where you are completely laying down!) This movie theatre isn't as big and fancy as some of the others in town, but who cares? I'd rather pay less for a place that I can get an equally great experience. The only flaws I noticed were that the doors in our theatre were terribly squeaky, making it annoying every time someone got up, and that you could easily hear people in the hallway having a conversation during the movie. I think this is just due to the fact that the theatre is so small, and I was sitting in the back row. I'd easily pick this theatre over some of the others. It's my first visit to Baxter in a long time, and definitely before they switched over to reclining seats. My return visit was for the opening weekend of Halloween. Despite all shows being sold out (yay for buying tickets online), there wasn't a large crowd standing in line for entrance or the snack bar. The theatre lobby was clean and felt upgraded, and this carried over in the seating area as well. Moments after our show, an employee was already inside sweeping and prepping the space for the next guest. Baxter is carrying a selection of beverages as well - local beers and cocktails. The prices range from $5-11, similar pricing to a bar, but on the higher side. It's hard to resist a draft beer for $6-7 though, when soda is almost $5. Also, such friendly service at the bar too. Smiles go a long way with guests. The recliner seats are nice and there's tons of room between each row. If someone is fully reclined, another person can walk in front of them with no issues. It eliminates the concern of sitting in the middle and having to hit the restroom during the movie. Compared to other theatres, this seating wasn't my favorite or most comfortable, but now that Baxter has upgraded to recliners I will not say no to visiting again. Ticket prices were $11/each and seats are not able to be reserved in advance. read more

We visited the Baxter Avenue Theater today and were surprised with what we found. First of all they have a lot of times during the week that feature special pricing. Check online to find the best and cheapest ticket prices before you decide when to go. Second the Baxter Avenue Theater has tons of parking. You can access the theater from Bardstown Road or come in off of Baxter Avenue. Very convenient. Another big plus is having kiosks where you can purchase tickets without waiting in line at the ticket counter. The snack bar experience was quick and offered most of the common snacks theater goers demand. After you enter the actual theater area there is a fully stocked bar with prices that are actually reasonable considering the price of popcorn, candy and soft drinks. I've somewhat lost count of which number I am on but I must say the large and in charge reclining seats are FABULOUS!!! They are really roomy and cause the isles to be further apart which gives you SO much more personal space!!! Add all of these groovy attributes together AND factor in how close this is to NULU and I am one happy lady. Another observation was the cleanliness of the theater which was really good considering more and more people are slobs and don't pick up their trash. There are a lot of theater choices but all in all I think Baxter Avenue Theaters will be seeing more of us in the future. read more

We end up seeing a movie at Baxter once a month or more and have had some great experiences. The most recent renovations, including the new reclining lounger seats and a bar, have been very welcome! One reason we really love Baxter Avenue Theatres is that in addition to the big, blockbuster features, they're really the best place in town for independent films, documentaries, and the like. On our most recent visit just this evening, we saw "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot" and had a great time. The area to wait to purchase tickets is on the smaller side, but if you go in the door and immediately head to the right you can find two self-serve kiosks. We have often bypassed lines by accessing those, meaning we get to the popcorn even faster! While we're talking about popcorn, theirs is great! If you think all movie popcorn is created equal, you haven't met my partner who is a real aficionado. We both love the popcorn here and it's worth noting that the prices are certainly more reasonable than the big chain theaters. Once you get past the ticket-taker, you can also stop by their new bar, serving 4 draft choices, several cans of craft beer, a number of wines, as well as a few cocktails. Again, the prices are reasonable given the setting and there's something about a good drink that just elevates the movie-going experience! The theaters themselves are comfortable, the screens are large, and the recliners are great. They don't do reserved seating, so I recommend arriving at least 20 minutes before your show if you want to be able to have your choice of seats. It's also worth mentioning that the restrooms are often on the dirty side. Not terrible, and not uncommon for movie theaters, but it's just good to plan for. Overall, we love seeing a new movie here and look forward to many more visits! read more

Possibly my favorite theater in town, thanks mostly in part to the Midnights at the Baxter movie series, run I believe by Beau Kaelin. Seriously one of the best things in town, in my opinion. They have fairly regular screenings of cult favorites and classics on saturday nights throughout the year. My favorite events of theirs were an Indiana Jones triple feature, with prizes in between the movies and free Spinelli's pizza and a screening of the full Grindhouse feature, un-split with the fake trailers. On Halloween weekend they have a costume contest before whatever movie they show, and throughout October show a series of horror movies. I love this series and the theater! read more

This theater is very conveniently located for me. They've renovated and have nice, reclining seats. There's not a ton of seats in each theater so it's best to come early to get your tickets. It can get really busy at times so planning ahead is key. There's a bar inside of the theater. I've not actually gotten anything from it so I can't speak to its quality but I do appreciate the option. It's a nice, smaller theater that's conveniently located for people in the Highlands and Germantown. read more

Time for an update because this isn't a 3-star theater(like my last review). With the upgrades, if a movie is playing at Baxter and one of the other theater chains, I now don't feel like I'm walking into a theater of yesterday. Sacrificing comfort is no longer a concern when seeing a film here. The new seating is a welcomed upgrade. This theater still has the best popcorn in the city. Sometimes films only come to Baxter. Baxter still is the place where you'll find the serious movie-goer. It's very rare that I run into some rude audience member at this theater. Kudos to Baxter for keeping up with the times and becoming relevant to me again. read more

This theater didn't look that great from the outside and I definitely was expecting the typical cheap run down theater. I was completely wrong. I walked in and they have a bar and everything that you can order a beer on tap with local brews or cans and even a wine selection! The chairs are those super nice reclining ones! The theater rooms are smaller and not many seats which give it a great personal feel. I hate being in theaters that are packed to the brim with seats. The bathrooms were very clean and well maintained. Overall a great theater especially for the price! Protip: movies on Tuesday are $5 and they also give student discounts read more

I went to this theater to partake in my favorite pastime: reading tweets about Cats. I hadn't been before but I was shocked at the sheer amount of people at this theater. I've only been to the Cinemark at the mall and thought that's where people went primarily. But this place was packed! (Friday night around 9pm). Parking was fun but still spots available. We pre-bought our tickets (obviously because Cats would be sold out....... jk). The staff was helpful. Bar/concessions is in the long hallway near the theaters. Reclining chairs were comfortable and I overall enjoyed my experience. Bathrooms were acceptable, not exceptionally clean. I'll be back again definitely since it's close to my house and inexpensive. Very happy I am now able to tweet about the absurdity of the movie Cats thanks to Baxter Ave Theatre. read more

I'm always pleasantly surprised by Baxter Avenue Filmworks. The chairs are comfy and recline, you can buy your seats online and skip the line, beer is available for purchase to take in the theater, popcorn is perfectly buttered, and the picture quality is great. The staff members were very friendly and for the most part, everything was pretty clean. I love this little local theater! I can walk to it from my apartment which is also a nice perk. I only gave it 4 stars because sometimes the sound mixing is not turned up loud enough for those in the back to hear all that well. I struggled a little in Captain Marvel to hear some of the key dialogue over the score. Fix that tiny issue and you get 5 stars, Baxter Avenue! read more

Baxter Avenue Theatre was my go-to movie house for years before the big, multi-plexs with recliners came along. I still remember seeing Trainspotting there the first couple of months the building was open. I loved, and still love, it's convenient location in the Highlands. Makes it easy to grab dinner on Bardstown Rd and see a flick. When Baxter started to show its age, I gave in and starting driving across town to the chain theaters that had all the newest options in seating, sound, and concessions. Thankfully, Baxter is back with a recent new and remodeled version! My family didn't want to spend Christmas Day trekking all over Louisville to see Sing! I'd heard that Baxter had gotten new seats, so we decided to see for ourselves. They have indeed replaced the traditional seating (at least in the greater we were in) with recliners. This has reduced the number of seats in the room, I know other Yelp friends encountered sold out shows yesterday probably because of fewer seats and higher attendance on the holiday. The concession stand is a perfect size, signs say additional wine bar coming in the spring, and I find the decor to be much nicer than the multi-plex. No huge, blinding, digital signs. No endless string of stanchions. Baxter is back on my radar for movie going which makes me so happy as I really dislike fighting all the traffic in the burbs just to see a film. read more

What to get: $5 Tuesday movies Service: 4/5 Parking: parking lot The Experience: I am a sucker for movie nights. I think it's a tradition in my blood to see a bunch of movies in December. I'll bring my snacks and water, but I absolutely must get the popcorn to complete my experience. I've been to this theater about 3 times now, and I am impressed by this small community movie theater. They have recliners in one of the rooms (the only one I've been in) and the seats don't feel gross. Thumbs up for that. The trick is to get the $5 Tuesday bargain. Sometimes lines can get long, so I suggest buying your ticket online. I think there's an added $1 convenience fee, but at least it secures your spot. You can also select your seat if it's a really crowded movie (e.g. Star Wars after opening week). You can either bring a printed ticket or have it on your phone for them to scan and give you an official movie ticket. I think by now people know that you'll get robbed at the concessions stand. $4.25 for a small soda. $4.50 for a bottle of water. I think those prices rival Disneyland, so best eat beforehand or bring your own treats. Just be inconspicuous about it. read more
