We attended the monthly Moth StorySlam hosted here at Headliners by our local public radio station. These occur regularly usually on the 4th Tuesday and we purchased our tickets online, although a limited number might be available at the door for an increased price. Ten storytellers have 5 minutes on stage to address the topic of the evening. Tonight's topic was "Revenge" with many inspirational stories referencing ultimately "choosing peace". The highlight of the show was getting to see local comedian, Mack Dryden, perform his unique wry schtick in unparalleled storytelling style. He brought down the house with his saga of battling squirrels while living in California. The venue has a small parking lot in front of the building, a larger parking area next to the property, and large amounts of free on street parking along Lexington Road and the surrounding side streets. Doors opened and lines moved quickly through security for bag checks, ticket scanning, and locating a seat. There were rows of folding chairs in front of the stage as well as 2 to 4 seat small pub tables placed along the walls. There is also an overhead balcony viewing area with tables and chairs. We did notice an odor in the building that was a bit offputting at first and then I suppose we eventually became nose-blind. It was a hint of a musty, urine, spilled beer, dive bar mix. We also exited the building around 10:30 PM following the show and were slammed with the familiar Butchertown pig slaughterhouse odor and almost ran to our cars to make our escape. Restroom was large, clean, and fully stocked. Large bar area near the back of the room. Easily able to see the stage from any vantage point in the large space. Audio was fine. Would love to return here for future events, including The Moth. read more

I attended a Moth storytelling event at Headliners, and overall it was a good experience, but I'm giving it four stars because of the parking situation. I have accessibility needs, and when I arrived they told me I'd have to pay $5 cash to park (which I didnt have) in a handicapped spot. It felt frustrating, especially since I drove myself and couldn't just park farther away and walk. After some discussion (thankfully, my friend spoke up), they waived the fee, but it seems like that's the default expectation, which isn't ideal for people with mobility challenges. Also, the venue itself isn't wheelchair accessible, so that's something to keep in mind. That said, the event itself was fantastic. You should definitely arrive early because most of the seating is on one level, and if someone tall sits in front of you, you might struggle to see. There is a balcony area for extra seating, though. The bar is on the pricey side--a soft drink in a 12 oz cup is about $3--but they do offer some alcoholic beverage specials. Overall, I love the storytelling events and will probably keep going, but I hope they improve their accessibility policies in the future read more

Concerts here always deliver! If you haven't had a chance to listen to these legends, do yourself a favor and find something -- anything -- from them! "Nubian Woman" had me in a trance. I wish there was a greater selection of eats here, but the bagged snacks worked for the time being. Don Was & the Pan-Detroit Ensemble performed, and I mean performed. I bought their latest album. It's been years! I came back to Headliners for the Dolly Disco and to celebrate the Louisville Pride Foundation and its food pantry. Parking was organized by the venue and a charge of $5. IDs were checked for each person, plus we were wanded and bags checked, even small ones. Service was fantastic, from those that checked us in to the bar. Opening a tab was easy and I never waited more than a minute to order a drink. Music was DJ'ed for this event and filled the venue. The bathroom doors felt the bass for some songs. BTW, bathroom was in great condition. Limited seating so be prepared to stand during the evening. Upstairs and main floor to view shows. I don't remember Headliners feeling like more than an older industrial building but last night it felt upgraded and had more of a personality with wall artwork and lighting. How did I give Headliners only 4 stars way back in 2014?!?! Correcting this immediately! Headliners is a local treasure. Maybe I'm a bit more sentimental because I don't go to as many shows as I used to or it could be because we almost lost Headliners during the pandemic -- but this is a local venue that should be valued. It helps give Louisville a soul. I most recently went for the VHS or Beta reunion show. And I appreciate that I was able to buy tickets easily online, get in without standing in too much of a line and find a good place to stand even though the show was sold out. Headliners is one big room that's largely standing room only, unless you can snag one of the chairs in the balcony. And even for a sold-out show, it wasn't too hard to get to the bar to get a drink as well. Headliners brings in so many great acts -- acts that have gone on to the big time can say they've played here as well. Headliners, you have my heart! And I hope you realize that Louisville loves you as well! read more

At Headliners Music Hall for the 89.3 WFPL Presents The Moth StorySLAM. YES! The Moth Story Hour we hear on NPR stations across the U.S. originate locally. There is not a Moth StorySLAM in Indianapolis, so off to Louisville (closer than Chicago). Full Bar available. There is also a seating area upstairs. The acoustics were good, although I was there for a storytelling event, I'm sure it's a great spot for an intimate musical performance. read more

Headliners is a general admission concert hall capacity is just under 1000 with eight large round tables and balcony seating with cocktail tables, the remaining is standing room only. A large bar without barstools. The bar service is very good and well staffed. We were happy to enjoy a medium sized patio with out tables. The stage is awesome!! Sound system is great as well as show lighting. Note; lot "parking very limited" with a $5 fee. No street parking. read more

Headliners is an awesome venue, no can deny that, but BE WARNED: I was the DD and order a few sodas through the course of the night, all were from the soda/fountain gun, not cans....I was shocked to see my bill was $16. I asked why when the bar tender said "oh we don't do free refills" I was in the Service Industry and still tipped 20% so I spent $20 on 4 tiny, fountain drinks stuffed with ice. I'm so mad I'm laughing LOL Are you all serious? How can you possibly justify charging $4 PER refill?!?! No signs saying sodas were not free refills as this is an industry standard. What a joke. Came here to see Wet Leg perform. It's a general admission venue, but seeemed that there was a balcony section for VIP. The bar is in the back. Two reasons this isn't a five-star venue: - the set up of the venue doesn't work. They have merch that is right at the entrance/exit, so when you have a sold out show, there is a line for merch blocking the exit. - it was freezing. We came on a wintry night and it was very, very cold, even with a sold out audience size. I do love their program that they use to resell tickets. Instead of going to StubHub or Ticketmaster, they use a third party service, so it's safer and more secure and the prices aren't insane. Good venue! read more

Headliners Music Hall is an awesome event venue! I have attended lots of events here, including concerts, and they've all been great! They always have an awesome lineup of shows and events. Some of my favorites I've seen here have been the Va Va Vixens, The Moth, the Louisville Loves Emo shows, and countless concerts. The venue is large enough that you can find some room in the back if you need space to take a breather, but I usually hang up front around the stage for concerts, though it does get crowded (like any other venue). It's pretty no frills, but it's always clean, and the bar is always quick. Also, there are plenty of stalls in the bathroom, so even with a line you never have to wait long, which is great when you're trying not to miss any of a show. And, even when it's crowded, I've never had any issues navigating around the space. You can always make it to the bar when you need to. If you're considering a show at Headliners, you should definitely do it! read more

I never write reviews but for the people who are under 21 please read this before going. The people at the door are quite incompetent & the methods for checking if someone is underage needs A LOT of work. You'd think they would give underage people a wrist band (like they do at PLAY dance bar) but no, they use a marker that's about as potent as a crayola washable marker to put "x" on hands & act dumbfounded when it gets washed off after using the bathroom. When the guy pulled me out he asked if I scrubbed my hands & I said yes because thats how washing your hands after using the bathroom works. He then asked for ID because "my eyes looked glossed over" but that's generally how my eyes look after I take my meds, I gave him my ID then he replied with my birth year & I responded with yes because this is the same ID I used to get in (my drivers license). He then said I could not go back in for whatever reasons he came up with on the spot THEN was reluctant to give me my drivers license back AS IF it was a fake ID. Moral of the story I will NEVER be coming here unless theres some sort of revamp because honestly that experience alone was more than enough for me to blacklist this business in my mind. read more

What a great event! I bought tickets for my mom for Christmas and we came on a girl date. This was my first event at Headliners and I was pleased. The show started at 9, but doors opened at 8. We came early to find seats. There are limited seats around the outside walls of the venue. They do have drink specials and you should opt for those to save some cash. Drinks are pretty pricey! We came to see the INXS Kick experience. It was a great show! They came out about 15-20 minutes late, but they played for a good hour and half. Plenty of room to dance and to be up close to stage. I will watch their calendar for future events that interest me. Parking is very limited in their lot but you can park in lot for distillery commons. They say they charge $3 for that lot. They do check hour purse and wand you. They also sell a season pass for $500, to all shows throughout the year. read more

Headliners in amazing! Reminded me of my favorite Austin music venues. They always have astounding line ups and excellent ticket prices. I caught Louisville Loves Emo there when I first moved to town, and not only did they provide a true emo experience equipped with black balloons and themed cocktails, but they also provided my HoH girlfriend with ASL Interpreters! An older venue in Louisville, but I still have to give this place 5 stars. Being a little older just adds to the overall charm and enjoyment for me. Out of all the venues in Louisville, this has to be one of my favorites. I've been here for hundreds of concerts, comedy shows, and The Moth! It does seem to draw really great bands and bands at the other end of the spectrum that aren't so great. It does well drawing the mid-range bands that haven't blew up yet. The ticket prices are usually reasonable which fits since it's an older building that is run down. The drink prices are reasonable too! It's usually 4 or 5 bucks for a beer and 7 or 8 for bourbon. Since this is a music/event venue, that price could easily be more. I'm glad they've established that sweet spot. The staff makes drink buying better too. They might be the nicest bar staff in Louisville. Parking is easy. They have a lot. There's plenty of street parking all the way down Lexington Road. There are also some secret places to park if you absolutely can't find a spot... but sorry folks, I'm going to keep that a secret... muahahaha. If I could change one thing, it would be to move the merch area. For larger shows, it would allow for more room for the crowd. For smaller shows/events, you could probably put quite a few more chairs along that wall. My only other complaint is back behind the sound booth and at the bar. If it's a loud band, sometimes the sound can bounce off the back wall causing you to get hit with a noise muffle. It's not terrible, but depending on the band... it can make a difference. If I could suggest... the upper balcony would be perfect to host a game night. There are already other gaming communities around town. If it was executed correctly, I think a board gaming day/night would work perfectly at Headliner's. Overall... if there is a band that you like and they come to Headliner's... They get some really fun acts here, and ticket prices are usually pretty decent. And I love the atmosphere of the venue. But: I miss not having to pay for parking here. The drinks...waaaay too expensive. I would really LOVE more options for seating, especially for more low-key shows. (Everyone will stand and enjoy for Matisyahu, most people would probably like to have the option to sit for a female acoustic guitarist singer-songwriter.) How many times does the bouncer need to check my purse? Last night...3 times. Why? Also, it just gets so hot there in the summer. I'll be back for sure, it just isn't my favorite venue. read more

I've been to headliners for a few events, and it's always a pretty good time here. The gigs they have can be so random, I've been here for an Aaron Carter concert as well as a Male Revue show. My favorite thing about Headliners is that the tickets are always cheap, the parking is easy and the building is small, so there are only a certain limit of people that will be in here at a time. Their staff are just "ehh" to me, or at least the ones I've encountered. I had paid $50 extra dollars for the Aaron Carter meet and greet, and when they accidentally forgot to give me the VIP wristband, the security could not have been more rude as I showed them my receipt and tried kicking me out anyways. Fortunately I was finally still able to meet Aaron ;) They could also do better with the seating. With a recent event I went to, seats were only available for VIP, so if you bought a general admission ticket you had to stand, crowding the bar and any possible walk space through the venue. I will continue to go to Headliner's for their great prices, but hopefully some improvements can be made for the future. read more

Three things draw me to Headliners: -The MOTH monthly readings -shows on holidays; looking for something to do on Halloween? New Years? Headliners will have a cheap, fun and usually universally appealing option -affordable performances by both local and out of town acts (can't wait for Alt-J in March!!) Sexy Beast and I attended the Moth StorySLAM at Headliner's Music Hall. We were surprised to see that the venue was standing room only. There were not enough seats for all of the attendees so Sexy Beast and I ended up camped out on the floor. We were happy to hear that the carpet was new. Not providing enough seats for patrons during a concert seems reasonable since many people will be dancing and hovering around the stage but for a reading or storytelling event, seats are a bit of a necessity. The bar service was quick and friendly but the drink prices were a bit steep. A double tall Grey Goose Cape Cod, a Sprite, and a bottle of (Costco) water set me back $19.00. I did enjoy the event and will likely give it another shot now that I know to arrive early in order to get a seat. read more

Used to love coming to this venue 10 years ago, when there was an empty lot where I parked across the street. Now there is modern apartments and you have playin with street parking. It's sounds like fun but it's 20/80 chance of getting side swiped or getting hit while walking to the venue. What's worse if you have passengers it's a incline wall that you have to Spider-Man walk to get out of the car and on the road. But I digress.. on to the Headliners.. security is a priority. They check your id, bags and all. The venue is spacious but limited seating, once they are taken that's it until they leave. They have the beautifully lit stage area and cleared the floor for dancing or large crowds. The bathrooms are clean and well tended too. The bar is stocked with the liquors, craft beers and wine! My favorite part is the outside patio, nice string lights, some comfy lawn chairs and just a beautiful relaxing vibe. Can't wait to go back and see some more shows. read more

I've checked out two concerts here, both of which were okay, but I think that has more to do with the performers rather than the venue. I actually enjoy the space. It's a funky little historic building with a chill courtyard and a decent bar. There are a few tables and chairs on the ground floor and the balcony, but lots of space for standing, which, utterly, always seems to be what happens. Acoustics are great. Parking seems to be an issue for some folks, but not for me since I live across the street. Prices for concerts always seem reasonable. read more

Headliners is Louisville's favorite independent music Hall. Most nights it features limited or no seating and employs a standing room only configuration. So shorter music fans are not going to have the best experience. But as a venue unaffiliated with the Ticketmaster conglomerates, ticket prices are generally lower. Shows often start too late, but seemingly not as late as they used to in the past. The smoke smell of the past is also a distant memory now, thank goodness. Headliners continues to book a lot of terrific shows and remains a favorite. read more

Came out tonight to catch Built to Spill with my wife and sister-in-law. We stopped by early and waited for the opening acts. I don't remember the first act's name, but it was a one-person band on drums and guitar. Venue is pretty standard as far as lay out goes, but has a cool overall vibe. The acts were fun, the crowd lively, but not obnoxious, and the sound guy actually knew what he was doing. Nice spot. read more

I always have such a great time at Headliners!! Ticket prices are reasonable and it's a cool place to take on a show. I have been a frequent visitor for some time now. My shows have ranged from Citizen Cope, Amos Lee, Hem, Matisyahu, The Disco Biscuits, Ingrid Michaelson, J. Roddy Walston and the Business, and Louisville's local Villbillies & Code Red. The history of the building is pretty awesome too and I recommend checking it out. There's really not a bad seat in the house. My favorite place is located downstairs in back of the sound guy behind the railing. You get a perfect view of the stage and the crowd! It's pretty much standing room only, however depending on the show and the atmosphere they sometimes do put tables out. The upstairs area also has a bar and a rail you can stand next to. This is another great place to watch a performance if you aren't into being squished upfront near the stage. I would give Headliners five stars, but then discounted a star for the bathrooms (I think every time I'm there one of the toilets are overflowing. Lol!). I also think the drink prices are a bit high. And it would be nice if they built a better air conditioning system in. These are all little things though. I really do love this venue. It has charm and is a terrific representation of Louisville! Headliners is a great size for live music that doesn't need a stadium to house everyone. The room is deceptively large and the mezzanine gives a great view of the stage as well as hold quite a few people. With the wide bar at the back, there is plenty of space to try and grab a bar tender's attention without having to fight people making their way back up to the stage. I really like the feel of the place and the sound quality was excellent! Reasonably priced tickets that are easy to buy on their site cinched it for me. read more

I love this place! I'm a big fan of small concert venues and this is a great lil spot! The sound and atmosphere was great! We saw the Mike Posner concert and had a total blast. The crowd was jumping and the people were pretty respectful. The douchebags were at a minimal level and there was a security presence there to keep people in line. I'd say a concert here is more fun than at Louisville Palace because there are no seats which means the crowd can jump around and have fun. The staff was cool and friendly and the people put out pretty good vibes. I didn't see any creepy dudes standing around staring fiercely at girls and there weren't any drunk fights after the show that I know of. read more

Headliners is one of those tiny ass music arenas that are the best because you can fight your way as close to the stage you want to be or be close to the back so you can dip out to smoke when a song comes on that you're not feeling. I've been coming here since I was in High School to see bands like Job For a Cowboy up to my most recent experience here, which was to see Neko Case with the boyfriend. It's such an intimate little place and the acoustics are hella good. You can hear everything everything no matter where you're at and you have a view that doesn't make the artist seem like an ant. The downstairs area has in my experience always been standing room only and there is an upstairs section where there are some seats you can sit in. They have a pretty decent selection of drinks. They have a full bar with some craft beer, plenty of domestic and a couple of imports, you can get a glass (AKA plastic cup) of wine or you can get yoself a cocktail, if that's your thing. The staff this most recent experience was great, I went outside to smoke between bands and I thought I had to wait in line to get back in and they just told me to get my ass back in there because they recognized my blue hair, which came in handy because I stepped out a few more times after that too. I can't speak for how good the cocktails were, however they had a couple of options of wine from Old 502 (YAY! Local!) and they had some varying beers, I went with Stone Arrogant Bastard and then after that I went a lil trashy and got myself a 24 oz PBR (or two). The prices are what you expect them to be at about $8/beer but if you plan ahead you can get a tiny little buzz. It's not KFC Yum! Center or some giant venue, but that's the charm of Headliners. Cheap tickets and a great place to see some people that you're interested in. read more

Intimate, sounds good, compares well to Bogarts (Cincy) and The Vogue (Indy)--those are just a few of my thoughts about this venue. They've already been going for over 20 years and have been under new management for more than 5 years now. That new mgmt has done it right IMO. Since my last review 8 years ago I've seen dozens of shows here. A few highlights: - The Black Angels opening for The Black Keys (before they got huge) - Tame Impala - The Apples In Stereo - Cut Copy (love this band!) - Guided By Voices - Son Volt (another 2x since 2006) - Japandroids (I actually walked out on them, too loud, and then the guitarist whined he lost his earplugs...omg!) - Premier of the Slint documentary, "Breadcrumb Trail," with an all-Slint-members Q&A panel. And many-much more! It's a full slate at Headliners always; check their calendar. I like the variety of shows done here-no ideology-and how they've maintained their presence and distinct identity among the increasing competition, and they do fit nicely into that niche that can attract prominent indie bands...right between local bands and the pricier shows that go down over at Louisville Palace and (the rather new) Mercury Ballroom. Shows range from around $12-$30 here depending on the act and their popularity and whether you're smart enough to grab tickets at your local record shop instead of online (I've vowed to stop buying tickets online so I can have a real ticket and my stub as a memento while also saving $3-4 per unit). What a great venue! A piece of Louisville music history! One of the best places to see renowned artists like My Morning Jacket, of Montreal, alt-j, and so on. The main bar is huge so there's a lot of room for people to hang and enjoy their drinks. Also, theres a smaller bar on the second floor loft which has very good views of the stage. The drink prices are very reasonable I payed $5.50 each for a Negroni and a Bourbon & Coke, $6.50 for an Old Fashion. The brand of bourbon is Four Roses. Many of their beers are $5.00. Also, if they don't know a drink show them a recipe and they'll make it for you. (As long as they aren't packed at the counter and they have the stuff to make it.) There is no food, but they do have the occasional food truck. Seating is first come first serve. There is no seating at the bar. There are tables in the center of the venue in front of the audio and tech. High tables on the side below the loft in between the bathrooms. There are just chairs on the opposite side and up on the second floor. If you get here early, take some time to admire the murals on the wall that date back to the late 1930s. The staff here are very kind, if you have a question about the history they will be glad to tell you something. Oh! Don't forget about the cool plane outside on the left side of the building. If you're in Louisville and you're looking for a good place to hear some live talent , please keep this place in mind! Even though I live in Cincinnati, I've been to a few shows here in the past 3-4 years, and they are always GREAT. Headliners does a great job of hosting big and small events alike-- they always seem organized and get people through any lines really quickly. The venue always seems clean, but still has a lot of charm. Always a really really great sound, even for naturally loud bands. Love this place, and anytime a band I like is on tour, I hope they stop at Headliners! read more

Headliners is an awesome venue! This is not a sit-down venue, this is a stand up time. A few tables line the walls and a few are upstairs in the VIP section, but be prepared to stand if you attend an event here. The space is a large building with italian-esque artwork on the walls. It is kind of an urban style though, especially with low lights an industrial elements like pipes and the metal rail separating the bar from the main part of the room. The stage is well within view from anywhere you happen to stand. I noticed that from various spots in the audience I could still see the stage. The bar service was prompt and effective; I don't know how the bartenders heard me over the music but they did! I only waited in line for about ten minutes, which was impressive considering that I showed up ten minutes from showtime. The security was prompt, I got wanded and everyone's bags were checked. The smoking area out back has plenty of room for the needs of the tobacco-dependent. read more

Finally made my way out to Headliners after starting to see more and more small shows in Louisville. My friend and I saw, The Mockstrosity Tour: Mac Sabbath, Metalachi, and Okilly Dokilly. To summarize purely on the venue ( the real showcase was the bands let's be honest here!). I was patted down at the door/wand'ed, armband/paid for ticket. Venue is large stage, decently spaced audience stage and even had tables out (I was told that's not the norm). No back or side smoking decks or space heaters to speak off. Go out front to freeze your butts off! I only had one drink, Tall Boy PBR, not sure on price but must have been high. My friend pick it up for me, and it seem to be more than 3 bucks or so, from his facial expression of "WUT?!". Staff was fine, but I interacted with them very little. No real other rude customers there, so no pros or cons in that aspect. I've been to better/worst venues for small or mid size shows. I think this place still can bring in great bands, and seems like a AOK type places to add to my norm spots for this hobby. IF they keep good shows coming,I will be back. read more

I've been here previously for a comedy show but came last week for the Moth Slam which was very very cool. If you've never been to a moth slam..I highly recommend it and will be back next month. Drinks here are reasonably priced and bartenders are nice. So, Headliners has its downsides: the women's bathroom is always flooded, the wait at the bar can be excruciating, and if you get the wrong bartender you'll be drinking Coke with a splash of bourbon. I've seen a lot of shows in a lot of cities, though, and so I've learned to appreciate a lot of things about Headliners. Having a balcony with seating is awesome--so if you want to kick back during a show and just watch the action, get there early and score some action on the railing. The elevated back bar is also great, so that when you're standing in line you're at least rewarded with a clearer view of the stage. There's also a side bar near the bathrooms, which is great to empty and immediately refill your bladder. And, although the women's bathroom floods, there are 6 or 7 stalls, which minimizes wait time. And then there is the more important stuff: the club has great acoustics (although it's up to the sound person to get it right.) The stage is sizable and elevated enough to see from any point in the room. Not only do they book great touring acts, they also host a lot of great local events. The ticket prices are reasonable, and so a lot of things will sell out before the day of show--I highly recommend advance purchasing if it's something you really want to see. Oh, one more thing worth noting: recently they lost access to their parking lot, which means you'll have to find parking on the street. If it's going to be a packed show, either get there early or be prepared to hike a couple of blocks. read more

Headliners is similar to way too many small concert venues the length and breadth of America. You pay your money to see a show and you're forced to put up with whatever you find when you get inside. Be that over-reactive unprofessional security staff, dirty surroundings, no seating whatsoever, uninterested bar staff or extremely poorly maintained bathrooms. Is it really too much to ask that bathroom stalls have working locks on the doors or that you don't have to stand in a puddle of stale urine just to take a pee? I hate that so many of these places take your hard-earned dollars and expect you to 100% enjoy a show in these conditions. The security staff were ludicrously truculent at the show we attended, remonstrating with people taking photos with their cell phones and stopping others from using a flash. This was before the first band had even come on stage! What security should be doing is dragging out - and kicking to the street - all the drunk loud talkers that there were in attendance for the headline act. We came to hear the band not you banging on about how crappy your boss was today or why you think your girlfriend is cheating on you. If you wanna talk, why bother coming to the show at all, why not just go to one of the many bars nearby and share your angst in a setting where you won't piss off everyone around you? I'm all for free speech but my ticket wasn't free, so stay away please! As you can maybe tell I wasn't impressed with Headliners. The band we saw were great but I would've probably declared them magnificent had I been able to enjoy sitting down for even 10 minutes of the 4 hours we were there and been able to use the bathroom without having to hold my breath. read more

I found myself at Headliner's when I learned one of my favorite bands from my college days was doing a reunion show there. I love smaller venues with a raised stage. They offer a pretty good selection of local and regional beers, which pleases me. Thought it was rather odd that it costs $5 to park in a gravel lot, but hey. Also seemed odd that the night we were there they had a bathroom attendant on hand. A bathroom attendant in a spot I would consider to be one step up from a dive bar. But hey, the bathroom was clean, I guess, right? read more
