As I was walking to my appointment with Dr. Jonathan Huey today, I realized that, as usual, I was looking forward to seeing him. How many times can you say that about a doctor?! I have been under Dr. Huey's care for almost six years. Initially I consulted with him about a strained Achilles tendon. His diagnosis was direct and spot-on. More importantly, after my tendon had healed, he fit me for a custom sole insert, and voila, my chronic tendon issues are a thing of the past. Over the years, I have come to know Dr. Huey as a rare, special doctor who: *genuinely cares about his patients *listens very intently to your concerns *is crackerjack smart, communicative and truly compassionate *runs a tight, friendly office *is on-time for your appointment (he deserves a Nobel Prize for this one!) I have been suffering with really bad toenail fungus on both feet for the last few years and I was desperate for help. 2 years ago, I visited a local podiatrist who (previously helped with my bunion surgery) prescribed a strong oral medication. It was unsuccessful. I was then prescribed a topical treatment and unfortunately that didn't work. The podiatrist continually clipped my affected nails at every appointment and eventually said it was waiting period (6months-years) before I could see any improvement. I felt hopeless. Next, I went to Kaiser for other alternatives. I was asked to soak my feet in Apple Cider Vinegar daily for the next 3 months and apply Vicks Vaporub on the affected area before bedtime. I tried this for over 3 months and there was no progress. I began searching online for another foot specialist and came across the Bay Area Foot and Laser clinic. I was especially interested in the new laser treatment they provided. I had nothing to lose and immediately made an appointment. My only worry was that my toenail issues were irreversible. After the laser treatment, optical solutions and follow-up appointments, I am extremely happy with my results. The progress on my toenails were quite noticeable in less than 3 months. I am very grateful that I found what I was looking for and appreciate the friendly staff that took good care of me. Dr. Huey is the literal best! I came in to Bay Area Foot & Laser with a chronic in-grown toenail issue (apparently, I lost the genetic lottery when it comes to in-grown nail issues...lucky me). It had gotten bad enough to where I needed to have it removed (to which, I was NOT excited about). Before I came into the office, I had researched what the in-grown toenail removal procedure was like (Hint: please do yourself a favor and don't do that. Especially if, like me, doctors already freak you out). So on the day of my procedure, I was nervous as all get out. I even brought a friend with me in anticipation of the pain and anxiety that I would feel. But Dr. Huey and his lovely staff made all the difference in my experience. When I tell you that, not only was the procedure way less painful than I thought it would be, Dr. Huey made a concerted effort to make sure that I was comfortable the entire time and explained what he was doing as he was doing it (as well as why he was doing it). You can tell that Dr. Huey absolutely love what he does and is incredibly good at what he does (which is always a welcomed combination!). Dr. Huey and his team are my go-to for all things foot related. So if you've been suffering from issues with your toes and have been too afraid to go to the doctor, I highly recommend Dr. Huey. read more

I went to Dr. Huey for a second opinion, but the office visit was rushed and he seemed dismissive of my history despite clear mechanisms of injury, inadequate treatment, and subsequent cascading injuries years down the line. I am a relatively young, active individual who was motivated to get better with mobility and strengthening PT. Instead, I got no further evaluation beyond an xray. I was barely touched and was not asked to do any exercises or tests to demonstrate deficits. I was just told "this is what happens when we get older." Upon follow up and a report back that my pain had gotten worse, all I got was a furrowed brow and recommendation for "$500 orthotics." I repeatedly asked for PT referral and never got it. I also never received follow up on the orthotics until months later after a DPT friend provided an actual evaluation and discovered extraordinary weakness on my injured side peroneal muscle, and various other strength imbalances and deficits (not flexibility, as Dr. Huey assumed without actually testing my mobility). Clearly, orthotics, no matter their cost, was not going to fix that. Believe it or not, this was still a marginally better experience than the first podiatrist I saw. This practice might be good for toenail issues and the like, but if you're an active individual looking to treat sport injury/get back to your usual activities, take a hard pass. I have since moved onto a different medical group with expanded access to specialists and paid out of pocket for PT with doctors and therapists additionally trained in sports medicine, who actually took the time to listen to my full history, ask detailed questions, and have very hands on evaluations. read more

I'm not one of those people who writes bad yelp reviews for fun. I only write them when they are (sadly) well-deserved. I know that during this COVID era, it's hard to find and keep good staff. All that said, this incident was just ridiculous. First off, Dr. Huey is a kind person and a good doctor. My GP referred me to him for foot pain which was keeping me from dancing, one of my life passions. He recommended better shoes for me to wear and my foot pain improved significantly, and he also recommended I wear orthopedic inserts that he would have custom made for me. I followed all his instructions, but unfortunately, his office staff is beyond incompetent and prevented me from getting full and proper care that Dr. Huey recommended. I had two different visits at both the Walnut Creek and Berkeley offices in December 2022, was apparently never charged for co-pays for some reason, was asked to put down a $100 for orthopedic inserts at the second visit, and then NEVER HEARD back from either office ever again about whether my order had come in. I called them in January 2023 to find out what happened and they said to call back as the inserts had not arrived. Time passed, I got busy with life, my feet started feeling better on their own, but as I was going through old bills and receipts I realized that I had never even received a phone call from Dr. Huey's office about the inserts, but they still had my $100. I called them in JULY 2023 and was on hold for at least 15 minutes total, while their office staff tried to figure out what was going on. When the office person told me they did not have the inserts I asked for a refund of my $100. They then informed me that they would only refund me $30 because they were taking the two co-pays I owed for my DECEMBER 2022 visits out of my $100 deposit, almost eight months earlier, (which they say they never charged me, even though I clearly gave them my credit card for the deposit and expected to be charged for those co-pays at the time of my visit). I didn't have whatever receipts I may have been given in December handy, so I couldn't check to see if they were double charging me. I had to sit on the phone for another 10 minutes so that they could email me itemized receipts saying that they had charged me for the co-pays, since I was concerned that they might charge me again. ONLY at the VERY END of a 20+ min phone call did I finally get an apology (yup just one apology) from their office manager. Ugh. It would be five stars for Dr. Huey, but his staff gets three of those subtracted. Avoid unless you have a personal assistant that can deal with the nightmare of their admin. read more

It didn't take Dr. Huey long to remove the heel calluses that had made walking so painful for me recently. Another boon, I found him to be a pleasant fellow and a knowledgeable conversationalist. My disabled brothers feet were in bad condition, his toenails are thick and he had a fungal infection. On top of that he ran them over with the gate at his home so they were cracked. He was in pain and couldn't put on shoes without discomfort. Dr. Huey treated us kindly and with respect and trimmed and thinned them down with a special tool. Afterwards my brother felt a lot better and his feet are so much better looking. He can now wear tennis shoes again and he is not in pain. The office is a quiet environment and the staff is friendly. 5 star service! read more

Everything from scheduling the appointment, interactions with staff, Dr. Huey himself, and the actual medical care is superb. It's rare to find a clinic that runs this efficiently. I visited Dr. Jonathan Huey in relation to a foot neuroma issue. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable, caring and genuinely interested in helping me solve my foot pain issue. He went the extra mile to make some adjustments to my custom orthotics, identify and resolve a toe nail issue and treat me with cold laser to help alleviate the pain and discomfort I was experiencing. I have benefited significantly from my visits to Dr. Huey and would recommend him very highly. He is an excellent Podiatrist. I would not recommend Dr Huey. I have been suffering with really bad foot pain for years due to bunions and finally wanted to do something about it. I work in the service industry and haven't been able to work to my full potential for ever or would just endure horrible pain. Anyways, after several expensive visits and orthotics and new shoes and trying to explain that the orthotics weren't going to change my bunion problem (I'm 48) Dr Huey told me that he "wasn't paid enough" (!!!) to do bunion surgery at length and that I should keep this course. I cried and he talked to me like a child. Months later my feet have gotten worse because now I've introduced a new shoe and orthotic and working is almost impossible. When I told him about the pain he told me to take Advil and at the most prescribed a lidocaine ointment. Like I haven't taken Advil for years for this already. Like a topical ointment would help the pain? I can't tell you how many times I cried in his office. The only redeeming thing about Dr. Huey is his awesome staff who seemed to understand what I was going through with him. The stars go to them 100%. I called a new doctor. Have since gotten surgery on the worse foot and can see light at the end of a terrible tunnel. I will probably keep the orthotics so I guess it wasn't all a loss, but a very expensive and frustrating And time sucking lesson. Advocate for yourself! Don't take a doctor talking down to you or not believing the pain you're in. You deserve better. read more

Wasn't happy at all. Knew I had Morton's neuroma and he guessed I had a broken foot after X-ray he came in and said oh no broken foot. Let's send you to a back surgeon I think I that's your problem. Did nothing else. Keep off your foot for two weeks and come back to see me. I was on crutches for two weeks waiting to see him. He did nothing else. I cried walking back to my car. Went to another Podiatrist and told her the story. She numbed the nerve and no pain. She set me up for surgery ASAP which went well and she removed the huge nerve. No pain. Guess he wanted to sell me his laser treatments to make more money. read more
