I broke my wrist and was referred to Dr. Cardon. From the first moment we met, he inspired confidence. He thoroughly explained my x-rays and why he thought surgery was the best option; he fully disclosed the pain factor after the surgery (which turned out exactly how he described it), and his post-op care is wonderful. He called me the day after surgery to talk about my recovery (after putting in a titanium plate), and told me I could take off the velcro splint right away if I wanted. I did just that and haven't looked back. No splint meant starting basic finger mobility exercises right away, and hand therapy a week later. It's amazing how quickly my wrist is healing after 10 days, and it feels so good to be able to move my arm and hand. Dr. Cardon understands physical training and the post-op care plan he individualized for me has allowed a return to my beloved gym after only 2 weeks. I'm so lucky to have found Dr. Cardon! What's left to be said? Dr. Cardon is competent and confident. He tells you exactly what he is going to do, then does it. I had the carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel surgeries the same day. The day of the surgery, everything is a little hazy, but by the next day, I was on an airplane home to Hawaii. I can't imagine a doctor with a more congenial bedside manner, and who spends more time with his patients - but at the end of the day, that's just the icing on the cake. I've been waiting to write this review for about four months since I I broke my wrist, but I figured I should wait until it is fully healed. Which it now is. I crashed by bike and broke my scaphoid bone. The scaphoid is both the most commonly broken bone in the wrist and the slowest to heal. I went to my regular doctor first, they had X-rays done, and when the doc saw it was broken, she had her office call Dr. Cardon. It was 5pm and his office was closing, but since it was two blocks away he offered to wait and see me that day. He explained the options between casting and surgery, and took the time to answer every question I could think of, with exceptional clarity and the occasional citation to scientific studies and literature. You could tell that he's the kind of guy who got A's in every class in his life, but he was also very personable. Dr. Cardon had a slot to do the surgery the next day, but I waited a few more days to do research. I wasn't terribly interested in having any titanium in my body if it could be helped, but after reading on the subject for a while generally seemed that with the kind of break I had, surgery and a titanium screw just worked better. Essentially what Dr. Cardon had said. The surgery was at the Surgery Center on Telegraph, which was surprisingly friendly and nice, which seems to be the experience that others have had also (http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-surgery-center-oakland). Dr. Cardon again answered all my questions on the day of surgery very well. The surgery went quickly (I was out less than three hours after arriving) and as non-unpleasantly as I can imagine surgery going. Since then I've been back for a bunch of follow-up visits, monitoring the progress. It was nice to have the use of my hand for light-duty stuff -- surgery means just a supporting splint instead of a cast. And it slowly got better; after three months Dr. Cardon cleared me to do all activities, although I still had some pain in some more strenuous movements (rock climbing and bench pressing in particular). But even that has gone away in the last month. My wrist is still slightly stiff at the ends of range of motion, but that seems to be going away over time. From the jump, I was given great information and options and never felt pressured toward surgery. Dr. Cardon is amazing. He's now surgically repaired both of my collarbone breaks, about 5 years apart from each other. The first one was during the competitive season of my sport while attending Cal. He was a recommendation from the sports therapists and he had me back in action within weeks. The second one was a couple months ago. As a Nurse Practitioner, I am acutely aware of a physicians skills, both book learning and street smarts; both are required to be an excellent physician! Dr. Cardon has both. I feel so fortunate that he is the physician for my hand problems. He expertly diagnosed my 'disease' and, although an option, never pushed for surgery. He was able to perfectly inject my wrist and thumb and there was zero pain. Dr. Cardon, in the past, operated on my broken wrist and I healed well without any problems. Dr. Cardon and his staff hooked me up with a new arm!! I fell down the stairs and fractured the neck of my humerus bone... like hella bad... less than humorous, lol. I was on the way to a New Year's Eve eve concert... I went to the urgent care on NYE and they took x-rays and were immediately concerned and thought I needed immediate surgery, which I was more than skeptical and apprehensive about. I went to see Dr Cardon on New Year's Day or the day after (it all feels like a blur at this point). And he recommended immediate surgery. I still thought it was BS and that I could recover on my own, plus I just dreaded the idea... so sought a few opinions. Every professional concurred, plus they were all much more expensive under my insurance plan. He didn't pressure me to have the surgery with him at all. But he didn't forewarn me that if I didn't do it, I would face limited mobility forever, (in retrospect, not doing it is probably an okay option for elderly folks, but not me in my 30s...) I still thought it must be bs... so I talked to my expert friends and network which all totally agreed that I should do it as a young person, but might not be worth the physical trauma if I were old. Dr, Cardon (and his amazing team, yes! I'm looking at you: Diana, Alexandra, and Alijandro (...) hung in with me and reassured me throughout all my worries. They were always professional and courteous to me. And made me feel like everything would be okay. Dr Cardon has a confidence and grace and his staff is top top top notch!! The day of surgery, I had to wait much later than my appointment, I was his 3rd or 4th surgery of the day. He works in the office a couple days a week and alternates those days with surgery days. The center was great! They brought me into a private room about 60-90 min before my operation. I was able to undress, get cozy, watch tv with my own remote , and chat with my mom. The staff came in to orient me. Anesthesiologist came in and helped me feel really safe and cared about-he met my family and reassured them I'd be ok. Dr Cardon came and talked to me too. I felt really supported! And not alone in this awful trauma... I had the surgery... yes... it's weird... they wheel you into an OR... but the staff were good natured and up beat. I'm slightly well known for being more situationally funny the more uncomfortable and awkward I feel, so they all rolled with it in good stride. I felt like I was in the hands of good people that cared. Dr. Cardon lead the charge and gave me a new arm. I knew from the pre-surgery counseling with the anesthesiologist that I'd wake up and wouldn't feel my arm.... so when I finally woke up, and couldn't feel my arm at all, I realized it was still attached by using my other arm. But it was weird. Like weirder than weird. I didn't feel it for more than half a day, but when I felt it again it was awful, thang god for heavy pain meds!!! I could barely move for a few days. Post op was lame. Don't do it alone if avoidable. I stayed with my mom who took care of me for a few days. I needed a few days post op for help with bathing and basic stuff. I was read for guests and food by day 4 though. Stopped taking the drugs after a week or so. Don't drive. Don't go alone. Have a system of food and hygiene ahead of time - I lived on wipes and homemade gifts for a couple weeks. Do see Dr Cardon! His office is great. Clean. Welcoming. Great staff sufficient equipment. Set reasonable expectations. I'm bummed I won't see him or the amazing team for another year now. He offered the surgery so fast that I was skeptical that he was pressuring me at first... I'm a freaking cynic... but he encouraged me to see other people, yet all their conclusions led me to the same answer.... have surgery and have it as soon as you possibly can to have the best outcome. Don't waste time like I did. Trust Dr. Cardon, and have it now if he says you need it ASAP. Ive was in PT at synergy+ in San Rafael with Freida. I have only good things to say about my experience with Dr. Cardon & his office. In short: 1. Professional, skilled, efficient, friendly, caring doctor and staff 2. Satisfied with medical treatment and service. 3. Seen and helped/ treated very quickly. Same day appointment 4. Surgery soon after with good results so far 5. Would highly recommend. I broke my shoulder (distal clavicle fracture to be exact) on a bike ride and was seen the same day. I didn't wait long before being seated in a room, when a very friendly, upbeat nurse (wish I could recall her name!) entered. I was already ultra-sedated on narcotics and really appreciated that she could skillfully and quickly do her task while at the same time showing concern. Loved her. She returned with Dr. Cardon moments later. From past experience with a hospital surgeon, I was expecting to be a task item checked off by a brusque, too-important-and-busy-for-you doctor bent on moving to the next thing ASAP. Well, Dr. Cardon was exactly the opposite. He smiled, sympathized, made a connection by revealing he does CX too. He took time to explain his recommendations, literally paint a picture of the procedure, and answer my questions. I felt more like I was talking to a benevolent friend than a far-and-removed professional. After the appointment, the front desk staff accommodated me in arranging/ waiting for my ride, as I'd lost my phone the day before as well. It was 3pm and I hadn't eaten or had a drink since 6am, as advised by urgent care in case surgery would happen that same day. As I sat shifting uncomfortably in the waiting room, pain meds wearing off, the PA stops by the water cooler. He smiles and hands me an bottle of Odwalla and lime juice drink, wishing me luck and hoping that they'd help make a bad day better. I was so grateful I could have given him a one-armed hug. Operation a few days later was just as smooth, and the follow up calls were just as friendly and personal. The surgery results seem excellent and I am returning to normal much, much faster than expected. So, if you're choosing an office for orthopedic care, I'd recommend Dr. Cardon and his staff in a heartbeat. Anyone can take care of your injuries, and maybe even do it with professional service and skill. But I think that you don't just get medicine here - you get medical CARE. Dr. Cardon is not only a super skilled surgeon, but he has some of the best bedside manner and ability to speak respectfully and intelligently to patients i've ever encountered in a doctor. This matters to me almost as much as a surgeon's skill and experience, and I know impacts the outcomes. My issues were (fortunately) resolved without surgery, and I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Cardon. One note that ties in to Raylene P's review: I would have given Dr. Cardon five stars, but his front office staff generally is not up to the standards of the medical side of the office. Specifically, they are efficient enough but as a group they are, for lack of a better term, not friendly. My 2018 ended with a pop. I went snowboarding, and wish I could say I fractured the radius of my left wrist while on the halfpipe but GoPro footage showed otherwise. The medical clinic at Squaw helped stabilize my wrist but urged me to find an orthopedic surgeon as soon as I returned home because I would need surgery. My view on surgery is that I would go under the knife only if absolutely necessary. Luckily, 1) Dr. Cardon understands and respects my view and 2) my fracture was considered borderline for needing surgery. Dr. Cardon thoroughly explained the pros and cons of surgery versus waiting and monitoring without ever pushing for one vs another despite the greater financial benefit to him of surgery. I took the monitoring approach, and was fully supported by Dr. Cardon. He was very diligent in his examinations and objective in his assessments. He worked with me to create a contingency plan for surgery (if needed) amidst my very busy travel schedule. Throughout the process, I always felt informed. Two and a half months later, I remain surgery free, and am making great progress, even tiptoeing back to yoga! :) I couldn't have received better individualized, personal care than that was provided by Dr Cardon and his staff-- Olivia, Alejandro, and everyone at the front desk. I saw Broheen yesterday for tendonitis that had gotten out of control. My wrist was unusable for nearly 3 weeks. I'm a law student and play guitar, harp, and banjo so not having a functional wrist is a non-option. Broheen was literally one of the best medical professionals I have ever seen. He talked to me about the full scope of my options, listened to my needs and concerns, and took good care of me when I nearly fainted after my cortisone shot. One day later (today) the pain has gone down from an 8/10 to a 2/10. I expect to be fully healed within the week. The energy in the office was great. Anyone would be spectacularly lucky to have Broheen Elias take care of them. My 6Y old son broke his wrist four days before our river camping, Lake Michigan swimming vacation. He was put into a cast and told that he couldn't get it wet. What?!! I was then directed, miraculously, yes I said miraculously, to Bro who made time to squeeze us in the day before we left. Bro explained the break in much greater detail than I had been told previously and then fitted us with a waterproof cast. What really stood out is how great he was at talking with my son. They were laughing and he answered a bunch of questions about equipment...the whole visit was made into something fun. We had a wonderful vacation and my kid was not slowed down in the least. My girlfriend is mostly recovered now and feels great, so kudos to Dr. Cardon. ===== Dr. Cardon did an amazing job putting my clavicle back into place after I broke it in a biking accident (he showed me the images of my post-surgery clavicle, and all of the pieces are now perfectly aligned - yay!) Dr. Cardon offered to do the more traditional metal plate procedure if I had wanted it, but he is also skilled and experienced with a newer, less invasive technique that involves using a suture to put (and keep) my bone in position. Given Dr. Cardon's recommendation/ superb track record with the latter procedure, I went with it and am very pleased with the result - there is no foreign object protruding from under my skin like there often is with the metal plate procedure. Outside of the operating room, Dr. Cardon has been really great about explaining what he's doing and why he's doing it, answering all of my questions (including promptly returning my phone calls without implying that I'm a nuisance), and seems to genuinely care about my recovery. It is no wonder that the ER doctor who originally saw me after my accident said that he'd go to Dr. Cardon if he were in my position. 5 stars for Dr. Cardon! ===== read more

My first surgical procedure for carpel tunnel on my left hand went very well and healed better than expected. My second and last surgery on my right hand went even better and the micro-surgery to alleviate the carpel tunnel took less than an hour. I finally found Dr. Cardon after suffering a wrist break that required ORIF surgery. I was not healing well and my 2nd opinion doctor in Walnut Creek was not helpful at all forgetting that he ordered Imaging. Dr Cardon performed special X-rays and tested my grip strength etc using a tool. He's extremely detailed and his office runs so well. I only wish he performed my surgery. I may need additional surgery based on a screw from the original plate. He's extremely conservative and so more to tell but if you have the misfortune to break your distal radius and /or have any hand problems then he and his staff are by far the BEST. read more

Dr. Cardon is simply the best! I wish all of my doctors were so talented. I have seen several hand surgeons - but Dr. Cardon is the absolute best of all of them. I've been going to him for about ten years as needed. The first time I saw him, I was in serious trouble. I'd been in a bad car accident and my wrist was shattered. The nurse at my GP's office said I could not be seen because it involved a car accident - which was wrong. So my hand just got worse and worse - until it looked like something you'd see on a corpse. Dr. Cardon saved the day. Most recently, I was told I had cancer in my arm and I was in horrible pain. Dr. Cardon consulted with oncologists, radiologists, tumor specialists, etc. He found a stress fracture in my ulna. He did a ton of work on my behalf, and I will always be grateful to him. This review is long overdue. I broke my hand- 5th metacarpal- and required surgery, but it was done by a different doctor, who put in screws and sent me to pt, but my finger was mostly frozen and the dr. had nothing to say. A year later it was still frozen and painful. I took a chance and went to Dr. Cardon even though the other dr. basically told me nothing could be done. This was years ago so I don't remember all the details, but I do still remember how relieved I was by his confidence that he could help, and that I never felt rushed by him. He scheduled surgery for just a few days away, took out the hardware, woke me up in the middle to check the flexibility at that point (he told me ahead of time!), before he sutured it so nicely that it not fixed the other doctor's thick uneven scar, but no one can even tell I had hand surgery unless they look closely in the light! He handcrafted out of plastic? resin? and velcro, 2 different hand braces specifically molded to my hand, one that kept my finger bent while it healed so it wouldn't freeze again, and then another to help stretch the finger, which was extremely helpful and also went above and beyond since technically that was the job of pt! He chose for me a physical therapy place (El Cerrito Hand Therapy) that found innovative ways to help, and he followed up with me until I had a much better range of motion. I can now fully clench my hand, have full strength, and no pain. If he was a general orthopedist I would have been back several times by now, so for any hand problem I can't recommend him enough. read more

Extremely positive experience with Dr Cardon and his whole staff. I broke my distal radius and required surgery to put in a volar plate. Dr Cardon was able to do the procedure just two days after our first appointment. The results were terrific, and he was very helpful explaining what he was going to do and making sure I had a good outcome, including following up through the entire healing process. My bone is now fully healed, with just a small scar, and I'm back to doing what I normally do. I definitely recommend Dr Cardon. read more

Dr. Cardon was highly recommend by children's pediatrician Dr. Niazi. ( I was referred to another orthopedic doctor but asked around if anyone recommended one and found this place) To be honest I never saw him and I'm okay with that!! I called for an appointment the staff was friendly on the phone and in person once I went in. Since I had a possible broken bone and or fracture on my right wrist they booked me right away but not with him which made me a bit sad but, it was the best decision. I'm sure Dr. Cardon also felt it was the best decision when he hire such a great physician she was wonderful! Her name is Diana Ha. Such a caring physician and very knowledgeable. I was examined and had a few xrays. She put me at ease and to be honest it was the best experience not only because it did seamed I had a broken bone, but it had healed in comparison to my old X-rays. Even if I needed surgery or a cast i already had felt being taken care of very well by them and would trust them if I needed more medical attention. Bait-and-switch! We made an appointment to see Dr. Cardon, only to arrive and discover that he wasn't in the office and, because of a long waiting list, we'd be seeing a PA instead. If we'd known, we could have made earlier appointments with other equally qualified doctors. I appreciate that Dr. Cardon is very good at what he does, and I understand that he has a lot of demand for his time, but the office could have told us this ahead of time. We have had great PAs in other Dr's offices before, so that's really not the issue. The real issue is lousy business practices. read more

THE BEST!!! I had seen another hand surgeon for a condition called Trigger Thumb which I guess is more common than I realized. The experiences were like night and day!!! The minute I contacted Dr. Cardon's office to schedule an appointment, I was greeted warmly and professionally. The office was nice, modern and confortable (unlike the stodgy old-school office the other doc had). And, they actually use technology to make communication easier - imagine that! The other doctor told me that THE ONLY fix (since the two steriod treatments didn't work) was hand surgery. For that reason, I put off dealing with it - hoping my problem would somehow go away on its own. When I just couldn't take the pain and popping anymore, I decided to get a second opinion from Dr. Cardon and I am SO glad I did. I was surprised to learn from Dr. Cardon that surgery was NOT necessary. In less than 5 minutes I was cured - no going under - no knives, just a simple (well, probably not simple) manipulation of the problem area and like magic I was cured. I could move my thumb normally for the first time in 8 months (I could actually move it during the procedure!) After a couple of days it was like I never had a problem. And, the doctor is super nice and very relaxed, which made a scary situation much easier to take. Dr. Cardon is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity reconstruction. I went to him expecting surgery to fix my broken hand. Fortunately for me, Dr. Cardon felt it would heal sufficiently on its own, re-set the bone and sent me on my way. I even got the cast off earlier than expected. Not as conservative as some other orthopaedics I have dealt with, but perfect for me (an educated male in his 20s). I didn't need babysitting, just a fixing. His manner was friendly and he didn't treat me like an idiot. read more

I've been here 4 times and I've met dr. Cardon once. The other times have been a cursory review with his PA. His diagnosis was not satisfactory and I had got better, more involved care at a different place. The final straw was being made to outside while the staff had an Office party("meeting"). Staff were all very courteous, scheduling was quick and all the forms were sent in advance via email (don't know about you but providers who can't deal with email these days are quickly being replaced in my list of caretakers). Front desk staff quite friendly (ok one person might have had a difficult day when I went in, but another quickly stepped in and everything was fine). I didn't see Cardon but his PA, who was great: very knowledgeable an experienced, spent a lot of time listening and then educating both on the issue and options and steered me to least invasive option (they try to keep people out of surgery is what PA indicated, which is fine by me!!! will try anything and do that only as last resort!) Nurse also very good. Xray equipment in office so a one-stop place which is really nice. I hope no one ever has to see this type of doc...but if you do, the quality of my experience was excellent and would highly recommend. (Now if I could find a GP where the experience was only 75% as good....it would be an improvement) read more

Dr. Cardon saved my sanity over 10 years ago, but I still think a review is in order. I had been seeing a foot specialist to treat a very painful neuroma and after 2 surgeries and 8 cortisone shots, I cried foul and begged for a permanent solution. That doctor decided that it best to have a good hand surgeon go in and fix things and boy was he right! Dr. Cardon thankfully "lowered" himself from upper extremity work and agreed to tackle my issue and surgery was performed in 2000. Almost a year ago, I broke my scaphoid and my collar bone in two separate accidents. I had surgery for the scaphoid and rest for the collar bone. His staff were great at informing me of what to expect and answered all my questions. Now I'm playing guitar, lifting weights, doing yoga, sailing, skiing, etc. Dr. Cardon is an excellent surgeon! I had a really wonderful experience working with this office. I broke my hand (spiral fracture on 4th metacarpal) while in training for a charity bike ride that was very important to me for personal reasons. I only had six weeks until the ride when the accident happened. Dr. Cardon's office, and especially Broheen Elias, were very, very helpful and supportive in my getting my hand stabilized in time for the ride. I mostly worked with Broheen, who stated quite clearly at the beginning that they couldn't promise anything because of the short timeline. I appreciated his honesty. I had x-rays almost weekly and as we got closer to the ride date Broheen worked with Dr. Cardon to make sure that I was good to go. They finally gave me the okay, making sure I knew the risks but understanding how heartbreaking it would be for me to miss this event. I did the ride with no problems, and it was a very memorable day. Although Broheen claimed that it was my diligence in following doctor's orders and my overall excellent health that accelerated my healing process, I have no doubt that his kind support was a huge factor. I was referred to Dr Cardon after going to my physician regarding a long standing problem I had with the joint in my wrist. From years of boxing and martial arts I had created a painful bone on bone situation that also put limits on my wrists mobility. I found Dr Cardon very easy to talk to and even with a busy office he is giving of his time. Also the staff are very courteous and efficient. There is never a long wait even though the office is clearly a busy one. After my first treatment I experienced improvement in my wrists mobility and a reduction in pain I didn't think possible. read more
