I want to highly recommend Maria Molina as a personal trainer at the Bay Club, Marin. I initially started working with Maria to recover from a knee injury. I wanted to strengthen my leg muscles so that I could return to playing tennis. As someone who is over 80 yrs old, I was somewhat skeptical that weight training could make a big difference in my athletic abilities but one year and half later of training with Maria and I believe I'm more physically fit than I was in my 40's. Everything is easier (i.e., walking up stairs, carrying heavy loads, keeping up with grandkids ,etc.) To say my quality of life has improved due to my work with Maria is an understatement, Maria is a consummate professional. She explains exercises clearly, pays attention to form and keeps sessions motivating and enjoyable. One day when I was lifting weights on my own at the gym, a gentleman commented, "I see that you are experienced with weight lifting, Your form is perfect. You must have been doing this for many years." I give Maria full credit for teaching me the right (safe) way to lift. I occasionally have a few sore muscles but recovery is quick after a workout. Probably the most important thing I've learned from Maria is to believe in myself. Sometimes she tries a new exercise that I think is impossible for me to achieve, let alone master. Her confidence is unwavering and has a profound effect on my mental attitude. I see few women my age working out with weights at the Bay Club. I did a tour here and was not impressed. My impression was all the annoyances that make people dislike gyms happens here. On my tour, the employee was so nice, but the facility itself was a big turn off. Bay Club is a catch all gym, from kids and teens running in the halls, to older ladies that never sweat but wear their teeny outfits while they hit on young guys, to rude people sweating all over equipment and not wiping it down after. The vibe gave me the icks. The women's locker room was dirty, with wet towels and trash scattered about. The members don't keep the area clean, and the staff isn't quick enough to clean up these gross items left strewn about. Needless to say, I didn't join Bay Club. read more

Now that it's owned by a corporation, all they care about is the money! You use to be able to bring a guest and would be allowed passes. Now passes are given quarterly and only for two guests, otherwise it cost $75.00 to bring a guest! WOW read more

I'd love to highlight a few of my favorite instructors at the Bay Club--each one brings something truly special to the fitness experience: --Violet is an absolute gem! Her classes are high-energy, fun, and always a fantastic workout. What sets her apart is her contagious positivity--she's genuinely happy to be there with us, and it shows. Every workout with Violet leaves you in a great mood. I only wish she taught more than just Ignite--I'd follow her to any class! --Helen is exceptional. She's not only an amazing instructor, but also a standout leader and role model. She teaches a variety of classes and every single one is top-notch. Her glutes class in particular literally kicks ass--in the best way! --Meg is one of the best TRX instructors I've ever had. Her instruction is clear, her class structure is thoughtful, and the challenge level increases over time, which I truly appreciate. She also provides great options for those wanting to push further. Membership Dept staff is inconsistent on information- jumps the gun without reading emails thoroughly adding a member without authorization. Provides incorrect figures sharing with potential add-on shared non-members (ie quotes a flat amount when the app quotes based on age!). Another club membership director says one thing, she says another. Horrible communication on shared memberships - the reliance on going to the website and "reading" Connect newsletters when primary members are holding the financial liability yet we are doing the marketing for them. I was told this was a scam and now believe it. We are doing their job with zero or mediocre support. HEED THE WARNING - SHARED MEMBERSHIP IS A FINANCIAL RISK. They still don't seem to be able to see the black mold in between the tile on walls on the showers at the pool. This is really unhealthy to be breathing it in. It constantly grows, and they rarely ever clean it. In fact, they don't clean the black mold on the walls in the grout only sometimes like once a month they will clean the black mold on the caulking in the shower. read more

Violet is the reason I've kept my Bay Club membership. She has completely transformed the energy and morale of the place. Her presence alone brings motivation, positivity, and a sense of community that had been missing for a long time. She's not just an incredible personal trainer; she's an athlete, a coach, a mentor and as I like to joke - my therapist! Her classes are challenging, high-energy, and somehow always fun (even when I'm dripping in sweat). Every workout feels purposeful, and she knows exactly how to push you while still making you feel supported. My entire family now trains with Violet (including my senior mom and young daughter), and I can confidently say we'd follow her anywhere she goes. She has a gift for connecting with people of all ages and fitness levels, and it shows in every session. The Bay Club is so lucky to have her, and so are we. read more

I've been a Bay Club in Marin member for about four years, and daily workouts are a big part of my life. I started with the gym equipment--the Jacobs Ladder is my favorite--but got hooked on the Ignite class about a year ago. The circuit-style workouts include three different cardio machines and floor workouts with weights. I really enjoy seeing other friendly Ignite enthusiasts in class--it adds to the fun and energy of the workout. Each Ignite coach brings a unique approach. I especially enjoy Violet's classes--she switches up the exercises regularly and offers corrections during class. Her encouragement pushes everyone to work harder. Holding four-minute planks and trying to burn 10 calories per cardio cycle is still my aspiration! Her class is so popular that I have to register early and line up to grab my favorite spot. I've also really enjoyed Ignite classes led by Helen with infectious positive energy, Nancy with amazing playlists and choreographed warmups, Leslie with efficient workout routines, especially for my abs, and Noelle with her fun factoid questions to help the time go faster. Each coach offers a distinct structure, diverse workout style, and motivating music. I also enjoy Linda's "Roll to Restore" class. I am learning to listen to my body, and after each class, I feel calmer and balanced emotionally and physically. The relaxation room has been an awesome addition to the facility. My only suggestion is that occasional deep cleaning (e.g., Ignite rooms and studios) would improve the experience. The regular staff does a great job (trying to service so many members), but adding deeper cleaning now and then would go a long way! read more

Some of the reviews here seem exaggerated, so don't take them too seriously. Yes, the Bay Club is way too expensive, but in terms of cleanliness, only the JCC comes close. I checked out five other gyms, and none compare. The young staff at the front desk are friendly and accommodating--good kids who actually seem to enjoy working there. The locker rooms are spacious, and the steam rooms and saunas are decent. The biggest issue is some of the entitled members who have been coming here for years--sometimes over a decade--and yet treat the place like it's their personal playground. They leave dirty towels everywhere, hang them over the lights in the steam rooms, and even spray essential oils like it's their own spa. It's like sitting next to someone on a plane who's wearing way too much cologne. In addition, some members seem unaware of how disruptive their conversations can be, often talking loudly on their phones--sometimes with the speaker turned on--barking orders to employees or vendors, which can be quite distracting for others around them. Some could definitely tone it down in the steam rooms and saunas so the rest of us can actually relax without having to hear their loud voices. That being said, most of the members are really cool, friendly people, and the overall vibe is that of a high-end gym. The equipment is top-notch, and even at its busiest, it's less crowded than other gyms. Plus, the property is in a great spot with plenty of parking and lots of cafes nearby to relax in after your workout. There are also plenty of spots to sit, socialize, or take a call (just not in the locker room, please!). The class spaces are well-maintained and look fantastic. A friend of mine, a four-time Olympian from Italy, trains here and she loves it. So, while it's way overpriced and a few long-time members act entitled, the club is far from "falling apart." For the second month in a row the Bay Club is trying to make fraudulent charges. I officially ended my membership at the end of January. They are acting illegally. I'm getting so angry for their poor handling of monetary issues. This gym is acting like the worst used car salesman but even worse. The Bay Club has corrupt business practices. And I just went to the bank to stop payment only to find out that the same thing had happened to the bank teller. read more

I'd like to thank the staff who man the front desk after 5 p.m--during thee (sp) cheerfully cleaned Holidays, Maisi due to the crew calling out sick. Welcome to the worst bay club in the Bay Area. The club is filthy, falling apart, and crowded with teenagers who treat it as a social hangout spot. Over the past weeks, I've seen teens vaping and eating Chick-fil-A on the fitness floor, throwing shaving cream and shoving each other in the locker room, and wrestling in the stretching area. The club is so busy with teens staring at phones it's impossible to use equipment. When the Bay Club says it's a lifestyle experience they apparently meant life in a frathouse. The weight room water fountain has been non-operational for months, lockers are literally hanging off hinges, and day-old coffee cups and dirty towels are left around. The timer in the sauna is ripped off the wall, as is the thermometer. And they raised prices twice this year. I didn't want to leave a review: I emailed the club manager several times about concerns with zero response. I can only understand that to mean that members are unimportant to the Bay Club. read more

I've been a member for about 12 years. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of positive things to say. The cleanliness of the club has been a constant issue and the staff responds with words, not actions. I only stay because of a couple of classes that I like and a great group of members. Some lockers are inoperable and could easily be fixed. I've been asking about this for several years and the answer has always been the same. "We are working on this" As the fees go up and the quality goes down, I doubt that I will be a member much longer. read more

It's great news to hear that the Marin location is renovating but one thing I heard is that they will be replacing the men's sauna with an INFRARED sauna. That would be a terrible decision as these are not hot enough and are unsanitary. Hopefully this is not true. The other thing I don't understand is why they don't leverage the basketball court to better use and put weight training and cardio equipment in there. It's always empty when I'm there and doesn't seem like a good use of space now that the rest of the gym is always so busy. read more

Bay Club Personal Trainer, Maria Molina ROCKS! She is highly skilled in her knowledge and ability to instruct and motivate even the "less than athletic." I never expected to learn so much about muscular skeletal anatomy and weight lifting--let alone, Do IT --at my age (I am over 60 yo) safely, and with empowerment, all credit due to Maria. She offers kind and precise, motivating instruction, with a keen sense in knowing exactly what I am capable of doing on any given day. She seems to gauge my capacity better than I can. I highly recommend working with Maria to learn exactly How and Why. I had always been intimidated to pursue a PT for weights, but Maria put me immediately at ease. Five stars for Maria. Over the holidays I purchased over $250 worth of merchandise. When I wanted to return one item (and brought it back within the 14-day period, which was poorly communicated), they said I needed the receipt. I was traveling and could not come back until 15 days after purchase. The retail manager refused to allow me to return it when I came back. He said he could not accept one item one day beyond the 14 days (a time period which seems untenable). PLUS they were closed Xmas day so technically it was 14 days of being open for me to return it! I asked the general manager and he said he would take care of it and to come back the next day. I came back and was then told the return system was down (which I think was a lie) and to come back the next day. I came back the next day only to find the general manager brushed it off back to the retail manager. I got the run-around from the general manager, and the retail manager does not know how to accommodate or build customer relations. For a place that prides itself on exceptional customer experiences (which I believe you do), I was treated poorly and put off multiple times by your staff. This was over the holidays and you could not accept the item one day beyond the time? Really?! You should be focusing on good customer service, not holding tight to a 14-day return policy. I'm appalled at how I was treated. It's third rate, unhelpful and unavailable. I've never been treated with such disregard. I simply want to return the item. read more

I have been a member at the Bay Club Marin for 20 years. I am a lifelong athlete, former college athlete, and have worked as a coach in two sports, and was a personal trainer for 8 years. So, athletics and fitness are a part of my life. I love the club, and want to leave positive feedback specifically about one of the trainers there. Maria Molina is fantastic! I met her when my lifting buddy and I were admiring her form and strength on the squat. We then learned she was a new trainer, and shared that we were happy to have a trainer with her degree of knowledge and skill at the club, as they needed people who are as focused and trained in strength building as Maria is. She is excellent with form, and teaches her clients how to lift weights properly and with good form. I have been a Bay club member for nearly 2 decades. It's always been expensive relative to other gyms, and justifiably so, but the recent price increases are out of control. Over the past three years, Bay Club has raised the monthly membership fee nearly 20% per year while simultaneously eliminating certain amenities. Great place to relax, despite the higher price of a membership. Recently too many kids come after school. High schoolers sprinting in the locker room slapping shaving cream on each other's backs is more annoying than entertaining at this point. I wish they had a 16+ age limit. Steam room has been the mainstay of my experience, but it has also been in disrepair for as much time as it has been working for me so it's a toss up. Gym equipment is constantly updated and popular machines are duplicated often to reduce the wait. Pool is great too. read more

Ow, the Marin Campus at the Bay Club. They have substantially increased our monthly dues, and left us with -- 1. The elevator has not worked in weeks (which has placed a significant strain on clients who have mobility issues and cannot use the stairs) 2. Half of the lockers do not work and need their battery replaced 3. The AC hasn't worked in weeks There is no care placed into the Marin Campus, which is such a shame. I am deciding whether to keep or cancel my membership. I briefly resigned my membership during the latter end of the pandemic when services were meager yet the fees returned to "normal." I decided to rejoin but after almost 20 years as a Bay Club Marin member and several years as a SF Bay Club member they required that I pay an initiation fee -- which was waived for new/rejoining members during a special that ran shortly after I rejoined and had to pay the fee. I did email my concerns, but in true Bay Club fashion, nothing came of it. I was promised a free private pilates session (in addition to the "new member" trainer session, which isn't really a training session), and that never happened. I have also written several emails about how filthy the pool is -- nothing came of it. And yes, entitled members yak on the phone in the locker room and leave their dirty wet towels in the shower. But the locker room is not clean either nor are the massage chairs (some of the staff do not wipe down the chairs after they're used -- yuck). And prior to the pandemic, this club had an excellent pilates program with great instructors/rates for reformer classes. That too is gone -- along with the spa and the cafe. This club doesn't seem to care about member feedback -- just keeps raising the fees and adding so-called amenities that don't seem to reflect member preferences. read more

I am a huge Bay Club fan and enjoy the variety of wellness options. I am a tennis player and have been beating up my knees over the years. I met Maria Molina and took advantage of a club training opportunity. I never expected this to turn out to be so life changing! Maria has such a variety of tools at her disposal. Her observation skills are keen. She really focuses on her clients and takes their success to heart. She takes the time to really understand who you are and what you need both physically and emotionally. She is patient and attentive. I cannot believe the dramatic turn over just a couple of months. I could not walk down the stairs without pain and now my flexibility has returned and my movement on the courts has improved tremendously! All of the reviews for cleanliness and such aside, because every club in Marin is going through major renovations (just see what they did with the pool deck at Rolling Hills, which is rad) - The real key is that while renovations are happening, they have started adding to the staff on the sports, fitness and service levels. Marin has recently added Violet, Helen, and some other trainers specifically to run certain aspects of the club - Ross has added Marco to help Corey with Tennis, and the managers that have been there like Marcel and Michael are able to manage the club because staffing has been addressed. I have always loved it because there is a great group of people that I work out with, and a great group of staff that I have always gotten along with. The additions of Helen, Violet and Marco for fitness, sports and tennis has been fantastic - I also would like to acknowledge the service and personal training staff - specifically RJ, Leslie, Dorinda and Kilia! I'm a former collegiate athlete and gym enthusiast .. I've had all types of personal trainers. Maria Molina is amongst the best and most professional personal trainers I've ever had. She is in my opinion the best trainer at BC Marin. Knowledge, personable, professional, and goes above and beyond for her clients. She has helped transform my body and knows my limits. The Bay Club is a sports and fitness club with many different classes, amenities, and even a spa, but what stands out among them is the highly organized gym. The Bay Club was founded in 1977 as the country's first co-ed fitness club, and there are now 23 locations across California. The gym at the Larkspur Bay Club is the section of the Bay Club where all exercise equipment is located. My overall experience in the Bay Club gym has been mostly positive. The gym equipment is spread out nicely so as to create more room for each individual. Members can count on the space of the gym being clean and sanitized, as well as safeguarded against user injury. A large variety of weights are conveniently located near the gym entrance, stocked with benches for lifting and mirrors so that members can check their form. There is an area with professional resistance equipment, complete with adjustable cables and a pull-up bar. Close by, there is even a rack with extra attachments and bands so members can customize their workouts. I find their location helpful when I am working out because I don't have to walk far to adjust my set. Directly behind the resistance equipment, there is an array of different weight machines for the upper and lower body. At the back of the gym are neatly-lined cardio machines: first treadmills, then stairmasters, ellipticals and bikes. Personally, I like the machine placement of the stairmaster and treadmills at the back of the gym because I am always exhausted after using them and there is an exit right there so that I can leave easily afterward. The last section of the gym is for more sophisticated weightlifters and more aggressive exercises. There is a strip of blue turf where seasoned athletes do less common and alternative moves, like sled-pushing, swinging giant ropes, agility training, and calisthenics. This is one of my favorite parts of the gym because it creates space for people to move their bodies in less-traditional--and more adventurous--ways. Along the turf, there are more cable machines, squatting machines, and all the kettlebells and dumbbells a person could want. The kettlebells and dumbbells are in a perfect place because most people use them while on or near the turf. Toward the back of this section, there are three power-racks, including a Smith machine. The Smith machine is great for lifting beginners because it creates more stability for the user. All in all, The Bay Club gym has a lot of options for exercises at all fitness levels and every bit of equipment a member may need is easily accessible. It is also very smart that the Bay Club keeps machines for similar muscle groups and purposes in the same area. This is helpful when members are working out specific muscles. If a member is on their leg day or arm day, they wouldn't have to walk around the gym to find different machines for their workout. The organization of the gym was clearly well thought out. Unfortunately, there are also some negative aspects to the Bay Club gym. The Bay Club culture is very different from that of other gyms I have been to and not always in a good way. The steep price of the gym means that the members are usually older and there have been many occasions on which an old man has complained about me working out on a machine for too long, or just given me dirty looks. The steep monthly cost of membership can also mean that patrons are sometimes snobby. There are younger people who work out in The Bay Club gym (some in middle school, high school, or college) because their parents pay for their membership, so I find they can be entitled. A downside is the fact that at certain times of the day, the gym can be packed with middle school boys. They never know how to work out or take the process seriously, just taking up machines to huddle around and gossip. This is very frustrating because I go to the gym to work out efficiently and it's easy to become impatient with immature children. Another negative aspect of The Bay Club is how busy it can get. I have to schedule the times I want to go; I never go at 3 pm because that is when it is the most busy and nearly impossible to find a machine. Overall, these negative aspects may be inevitable at many gyms, but I do wish that the gym had an age requirement of 15 years old so we could ensure proper use of the equipment. In general, the employees at The Bay Club gym are very nice and welcoming. They say, "Have a good workout!" whenever a member comes into the gym and always hopes people "Have a good day!" when leaving. They can also be generous because when I go to the gym with friends and have no guest passes they still allow us to use the premises. Although the employees are great, they are paid only $16/hour, which is extremely low compared to other gyms and in light of the membership cost. The employees of Five Points gym in Corte Madera get paid nearly $30/hour. The Bay Club costs almost $500 a month and Five Points is $60/month. read more

I email the GM, Nicole, like 3 times with no response. The front of house staff look miserable. 0 pride taken in this business. Yes you're nicer facilities than let's say 24 hour fitness, but you got a lot of audacity to charge 5 times as much for being barely nicer. At least people their are friendly...that's why I quit this gym months ago. Seriously, anyone go here and then check out Walnut Creek or SF facilities, you' be shocked the difference in quality. Pathetic and disappointing response to Covid. 15+ year bay club member across multiple locations. They have been aggressively trying to charge everyone during Covid, even when it was against the law to visit facilities. Try to cancel, suspend, change membership or get someone to actually speak with you, and they give you the run around. KKR killed the spirit of this place. read more

If they call or email asking you to join get it all in writing. I was totally misled about there being no initiation fee and that the senior rate allowed me to play pickleball. Once I went to sign up I found out that I could not play during the hours she had sent me but I could play before 9 or after 5:00. I really felt tricked and am truly disappointed in their tactics. I've been a member for 10 years and love the club and love all the improvements they're constantly upgrading the gym, adding new trendy workouts and classes updating equipment especially during Covid while the gym was closed. I love all the new classes especially fight. I have a membership that I can go to the clubs in San Francisco and in Marin and love that I love the variety there's definitely more classes in San Francisco but that is not the gyms fault. It's not enough people taking the classes in marin . As far as the price it's very competitively priced with any high-end club again I think they have great instructors, clean beautiful club . read more

Yonit is a great trainer, the main attraction at BC, (and funny). She taught at TJ's CrossFit; $35/class ($420/mo) no extras/towels, just weights & drinking fountain. BC is $265/month, unlimited classes/amenities, pool, tennis, spa. Everyone welcome. Some local cross-fit gyms aren't as welcoming. read more

This is really two reviews. Member since 2002. Overall the facility is very acceptable. Spin classes and especially the M.E.L.T. group are superb. The morning group in the Lounge upstairs is very convivial. That said, the management leaves a lot to be desired. The maintenance crew has been eliminated, and overall there is a trend to cut human staff and automate. Why? Simply put, Bay Clubs are a private equity play. Buy it, cut expenses, raise dues, sell based on a higher multiple of profit. First week of December I resigned in person from the Bay Club, or at least I thought I did. Turns out, over the next couple of weeks i got a number of messages demanding I jump thru hoops, plus they said that my dues would continue until the end of the month following my giving notice. Cost me over $400. Sorry, scammers, I thought you were better than that. read more

I finally did get in touch with people at the Bay Club once they did a huge fee increase and they told me that that the increase was a one-off to fund the facility upgrades in Marin. Note again that I am very tired of asking the front desk and then not getting any calls back. It was very tough to get ahold of the right people as customer service is not great there. Anyway, even after they told me that the fee increase was a one-off they then increased the fees again a few months later. I thought the prices were sky high before, but they are ridiculously high now ( 50% higher than the original quoted monthly fee only 2 years ago). Additionally, they took away child care for children over 5 at Marin, so we lost that value as well. I still have a hard time booking the Ignite classes and the facilities still aren't great. I feel like this was a bait and switch as they tried to get more members in and then increased the monthly fees for a subpar offering. I am now at the point where I don't even want to go to the Bay Club because it just feels like they are extracting as much money as possible from members. We have finally quit and I am very excited to not have this in my life any more. The only really valuable thing (which I believe they have a monopoly on) is the kid pool at Ross Valley. They told me that some day Rolling Hills in Novato will be amazing (but that is very far away from our house) and they will be done upgrading the other facilities in Marin and Ross Valley to justify such a high price, but we can't keep paying exorbitant fees for years for not a lot of value. I am not OK with them passing along the cost of the facility upgrades to current members when these things should have been done before charging such a high price. read more
