It's just a few steps off the main drag in Radnor Street (opposite the end of Kelvin Way), and seems to have been a burger bar in a former life. It was a Monday night, so they weren't exactly busy, and so the service was friendly and attentive, and we were soon tucking into our starters. We had the hot smoked salmon and asparagus as a starter, and straight away I realised that the food was going to be great, as the asparagus was cooked to perfection. Often the ends of the stems can get a bit stringy, but not here. Not stringy and not limp, just perfect crunch. For mains, we both had the pollock, which is a fish you don't see that much here, although it is becoming more popular. The portion size seemed a bit small, but in retrospect it was just right as it left room for some pudding! Again, the veg were cooked to 'al dente' perfection. The whole was washed down with a half-carafe of very dry white wine from their extensive wine list, and we left replete and happy.

We eventually settled on the Venue because of their beautiful looking food and their array of gins. And we were not disappointed. I really can't rate this place highly enough. The staff immediately made us feel extremely welcome and completely attended to. They were knowledgeable, friendly and hilarious. A great discussion and recommendation of the menu meant that I had the scallops to start and the belly pork as a main. Everything cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. Not only that but my sweet, tender belly pork didn't need a knife as it just fell apart, and was huge! The place itself is made up of several little areas and they had a community dining set up where you share a giant table with other guests. I'm personally not normally a fan of this because I like my own space... But it worked well here as it added to the cost ambience. I could write a separate review on the range of gins and whiskey... But I'll just say, it's absolutely massive. We also tried some cocktails which again were wonderful. After eating our fill (and then finding room for pudding and some complimentary treats) we spent £65 on 3 courses each a one a few drinks. I have paid much much more before for a lot less. One of the highlights of our entire trip to Scotland was visiting The Venue, in Perth.

I mean put that way.....should it have ever been so hard, well before Fred opened this little gem it really was. Whether you are looking for a pre-meal drink before heading upstairs to the restaurant or you are looking to spend some time enjoying a bottle of something delicious this place is a great option. With its own mean and specials you can turn a glass of wine into a full meal if you wish. The saucisson is insane...oysters from Loch Fyne, baked vacherin...truffle brie. I could go on. Loic once the sommelier at the well known Mark Greenaway leads the team with his usual friendly and welcoming manner. If you were a regular there or as the now closed Bistro Moderne a few more of the staff may be familiar too. Its a great experience with great products.

We were told that once we placed an order, we would not be permitted to put in any more food due to a "small kitchen." I have never heard this rule worded in quite this way. I have been to places that prefer you place everything at once, but not that you would absolutely not be allowed to order more food if you found yourself hungry. We witnessed another table leave because of this rule. The server communicated this rule quite gruffly. The restaurant was also not very busy at all, so couldn't have been crowding concerns. I would definetly recommend for drinks and apps, but, for dinner, perhaps elsewhere.
