I just completed a 20 day day stay at Bayshire Carlsbad after total knee replacement surgery at Tri-City. I'm giving my strongest recommendation for Bayshire Carlsbad. Of all the positive things I can say, the thing that is the most meaningful to me is how much each and all of them cared for me both professionally professionally and personally. I felt cared for. I will always be grateful to the people at Bayshire Carlsbad, for how they cared for me while I was recovering from a painful recovery that was fraught with obstacles. Now I am home and I feel confident that I will complete my recovery and have the best possible outcome I will always remember with fondness the many people who helped me at Bayshire Carlsbad.

Hair stylist Jill at Bayshire was excellent.

My father was here after back surgery. The care was actually really great & the office really couldn't have been any nicer.

Carlsbad by the Sea is relatively small and is likely to remain an intimate face-to-face community in which everyone gets to know each other. There are many events and activities, most of which bring people together. Staff is a constant presence and very caring toward the residents. Since we are all equally human, none of us is happy about everything all the time. Some of us like to run things. Others don't. Some of us grumble. Others of us smile. Many of us do both. Sometimes dining service is slow. Some people complain that our menus have too many choices. That's no different from our lives before Carlsbad by the Sea. In sum, for us--and most of our friends--this is a great place to grow old. Those residents who with time come to need care services are admirably tended in the skilled nursing facility, which is separately licensed but closely associated with Carlsbad by the Sea. Re the business model, residents do not pay for long-term care insurance in our fees. That means we pay only for the health care we use. While that can be costly for some, it's more affordable for those who need less care. There is no care-inclusive option such as that offered at some other similar communities. Most residents pay an entry fee which becomes nonrefundable after about five years. There is a refundable option at double the price. Carlsbad by the Sea is part of Front Porch, a corporation that runs a number of communities and other senior serving entities. Local community business operations are integrated into the larger corporation. The compelling attraction for Carlsbad by the Sea is its location on the beach in the Village area of Carlsbad, a well-managed seaside community. There is a train station just a block away to the East and public buses pass by the entrance. In addition, the community itself offers a well-regarded transportation service, though many residents continue to maintain their own cars.

I have written at least 5 reviews for this business over the years, some of them are listed under…read morethe previous name (Emeritus). I always held something back for fear of retaliation. Brookdale is a conniving business. After my father's passing I can speak more candidly, so here I go. I must dilute my description of the executive director because words can not describe her. At first glance she seems inert, but when she is in attack mode she becomes a dragon. Imagine a heinous woman whose gaze is enough to shock a person into a panic with a voice that makes the hairs up and down your spine stick out like razor blades in a defense. Now multiply that by 10 and you can imagine this woman. My father moved to this facility many years ago and signed a contract that had annual cost increases fixed at 5% and a maximum care level that was within his budget. He bought his monthly fee down by paying a large up-front fee with the intention to live the rest of his like there. More on that to come... Over the years we have had a personal caregiver onsite at least every other day and have witnessed how the residents are treated and the way that they do business. During this time I have seen so many unprofessional things happen to list including: lack of respect for a patient's dignity, failure to comply with HIPPA rules, organized attempts to falsify investigations by the health department, staff losing his medical directive forms, and other devious tricks. Never in my wildest dreams could I anticipate all of the challenges we had to endure, but their final act was reprehensible. On May 26, the day my father passed, the executive staff called my brother and told him that my father had died of choking, a horrible end which caused grief for our family. We eventually found out that they made up the story and that he passed peacefully and quickly after talking to the nurse on duty. I can not imagine any reason that they would fabricate such an awful story which caused pain on so many levels. After a few years of living at this facility my dad began packing on weight. We asked them to feed him a 2,000 calorie diet but they said that they offer residents a variety of food and they must make their own choices. The menu includes high calorie options like Denver Omelettes for breakfast, huge lunches complete with dessert and another full meal with dessert at dinner to people who are unable to manage their lives. I finally had his physician write up a prescription for a healthy diet but he still kept packing on pounds and there was nothing that I could do to get them to control his caloric intake. One of the numerous incidences that our family calls poopy pants occurred a few years ago. When our caregiver showed up and he was sitting in a pile of his own filth. She requested that they change his clothes and discovered that they had merely changed the outer layer of clothing and left his soiled underwear on. Another similar incident occurred on a Sunday after he soiled himself and our caregiver requested a change of clothes and a shower. The caregivers flat out refused to bathe him stating that he can only be bathed on pre-scheduled days and he would just have to wait in his feces. I made a huge "stink" about this incident and asked for documentation. They flat out refused to document this in their records and essentially gave the employee a vague form to sign stating that respect for people's dignity was important. I was tasked with keeping a large stock of gloves, towelettes, and personal hygiene items. The alternative is to buy these items at a huge markup from Brookdale, they like to make a profit on every item people use. Brookdale charges for medication management and will only buy them at Vitas, a company that sells blister packs of medication and does not accept insurance. They refuse to order medications through insurance so be prepared to pay street prices. We submitted some complaints to the health department but learned that they get advance notice when a visit is imminent. The entire staff has a procedure to go through everyone's rooms and all common areas and cleanup all of the things that are not allowed which I think should be illegal. They also gave me a stack of another patient's confidential medical records one time violating HIPPA laws. After Brookdale took over the Emeritus facility they completely changed the business model and the personal care rates nearly tripled from what we signed up for. My father was being released from a three month stint in the hospital and being transferred to a hospice program onsite. The wicked executive director threatened to kick my father out of his death bed if we did not sign a new contract agreeing to an excessive new fee structure. That woman has a heart of stone and cares much more for her performance statistics than the well being of her patients. If you are in the market for elder care I hope that you read my review and find a better place for your loved one.

But we quickly noticed that they talked big for the actual help they provided If you didn't remember things. In June 2021, just 6 months later, they insisted she move to their "all inclusive" Memory Care area for 24 hour eyes on her. That was a really good fit because they only had a few residents. Mom could get around with a walker but needed basic assistance with day and night care. She could feed herself, use the restroom, make her bed, she participated in the daily crafts and activities, she followed the staff around and mom figured out that the 3 "exit doors" ((in the secure 24 hour memory care)) had signs on them that said "STOP PUSH TO OPEN" so she said all she was doing was following the instructions and she was looking for her husband... pretty typical dementia behavior. They told us she was an EXIT SEEKER and we said where is the professional staff to redirect her...? When she was moved to the 24 hour memory care we understood that they would adjust staffing as needed with changes in behavior or care when needed because the turnover of residents fluctuate... So after 3 1/2 years in the memory care building at 96 years old in her now familiar home -they evicted her. Claiming they couldn't accommodate her care needs. But that was a cop out. I say this because in addition to paying her current room rental of close to 10,000 per month for her care, they insisted that because she was an EXIT SEEKER ((and they were UNDER STAFFED)) that WE would have to hire an outside personal 24 hour care nurse to stay with her, in her room, so basically we were paying for the Laguna Estates staff AND a 24 hour nurse too. That was their excuse to evict her, but we think the real reason was that when she originally moved into the room in 2021 that the room that was available was originally set up as a "shared" room. We think they just wanted that room space for 2 residents rental for more $$$. We feel that they should have at least offered that she share a room instead of evicting her and claiming that they couldn't care for her needs. During her stay at LE the Executive Director changed to the 4th different one. They were cutting staff and splitting shifts and leaving wheelchair dependent disabled folks alone for hours at a time in the tv room, in their rooms or wherever. With this eviction they really placed our fragile mom in a stressful situation. Unfortunately the move was very difficult and too stressful for her to rally with and she passed away about 6 weeks after they evicted her ~16 days before her 97th birthday. RIP our sweet mom. We love you

Secondly, my MIL lived at Sunrise La Costa for 8 1/2 years. It started going down hill about 2019. As bad as we saw it, Sunrise was her home and elderly people don't like change. We couldn't convince her to move. Having said that, I wouldn't recommend Sunrise to my worst enemy. My mother-in-law lived there 8 1/2 years. What we saw occurred over years, not a short period of time. In 8 1/2 years, her room was never painted, recarpeted and nothing was done to maintain the bathroom. They recently remodeled the common area, but if you go into a room, the carpet is worn, stained and probably smells. Weekly cleaning consisted of vacuuming the middle of the room and a quick wipe down of the bathroom counter. Her care levels would be increased (along with her monthly fees), and we were not notified until after it occurred and I got a higher bill. When I called to inquire about why the bill was higher, they said 'we talked to your mother-in-law. She agreed to the new care'. As the responsible bill paying person I should've been made aware of levels of care and costs. At one point, they overcharged me $8000 for a one month bill. I called to disputed it, I was told it would be taken care of. Then my bill next arrived. The overcharge hadn't been taken care of and a day later, I got a letter in the mail saying I was being sent to collections. Sent to collections over their billing mistake! Two days, 5 phone calls to Sunrise, none of which were returned and finally a phone call to corporate the mistake was cleared up. There was only bus service for drs appointments on Wednesdays. My MIL's cardiologist wasn't in the office on Wednesday, so she had to change doctors. The staff, especially after Covid was a revolving door. I never knew who to talk to. I would call talk to one billing person or Care staff, a week later I would call us to talk to the same staff, and I was told they were gone. This happened time and time again. As far as care? When we were paying $10,000/ month, we'd expect decent care. My mother-in-law fell at one point. I was called. I was told of her fall and I was told they were taking care of it. My daughter happened to visit my mother-in-law five days later. My daughter called and asked if I knew my mother-in-law hadn't left her room in five days because she was in so much pain. The staff never called to tell me this. I drove down from Los Angeles, took my mother to the doctor and found out she had a fractured pelvis and cracked shoulder blade . On her last illness, she called me at 9:30 in the morning. She said she didn't feel good, she'd been throwing up for two days, she had been refusing her medication for two days. She had told four staff members that she didn't feel good, no one did anything. It wasn't until I called and talked to the head nurse that they looked at her. I asked the head nurse why they didn't do anything for her. His response was that she never complains. I asked if she never complains, why wasn't she heard or listen to when she did complain. He had no answer. When we learned of my MIL's final illness and she was moved to hospice. No one called from Sunrise to check in on her or us. When I called to tell the director she wouldn't be coming back, there were no words of sympathy or care. All I heard was the room had to be emptied in 30 days. I know the director had only been there a few months, but my MIL was a long term resident. I got more words of sympathy and concern when I called to cancel her Mastercard! Other Sunrises may be different. My experience with Sunrise La Costa is that they are a money making operation, not the family atmosphere they advertise.
