It's a beautiful path and sign. However, downtown Clearwater is a surreal wasteland. Many businesses are fake and most of the huge buildings are totally empty. This is the headquarters of Scientology and the religion owns most of the property. You occasionally see well dressed young people walking from place to place taking on a Scientology task of some sort. They never say hello or smile. It's like a bizarre science fiction movie. Perhaps someday, downtown Clearwater will be revitalized but, unfortunately, it has a very long way to go. Life isn't very good in downtown Clearwater.

It's quiet, spooky, surreal and full of huge mostly empty buildings. Even some of the large multistory residential buildings appear to be empty. The Scientologists made downtown Clearwater their home base and bought a significant percentage of the real estate over the years. Some of the businesses on N Fort Harrison street are affiliated with Scientology and are not actual independent local businesses. When I go downtown for a public outdoor yoga class in a parlk or a pop up market or some other very rare reason, Scientology folks are walking busily from place to place but won't typically look at you. It feels like a freaky science fiction movie when you experience it. Life is different in Clearwater.

The park itself is very clean and nicely laid out with a cool splash pad for children to play in as well as a nice little park with stuff to climb and slide down and around on. I like that the park had some really clean bathrooms and the stalls didn't have any gaps when I closed the door. Being able to walk around this park and see some beautiful views of the water was something that was very cool because it is right off the water! No matter where I was walking there was something to see and enjoy. There was also a ton of seating around the park so I didn't have to sit on the floor or sit in the way of anyone. I also love that there are both stairs and ramps so that everyone is able to enjoy this park!

It's a humpback bridge over Salt Creek that was created to enable the first trolley line to be established. However, the current bridge has 1931 engraved in the concrete so apparently it is not the original. Do you know where to learn more? The man who introduced electricity to St Pete, F. A. Davis, founded the St. Petersburg and Gulf Railway Company in 1901. He created a light rail trolly system when there were fewer than 2,000 residents! It debuted in 1911. Sometimes, passengers and/or the conductor would have to get out and push to get the trolley over the bridge! There are stories of naughty kids greasing the rails which would prevent the trolly from being able to cross. Kids will be kids! Now, it's a launch pad for zooming cars. Well I thought I would pop off a review for the very architecturally cool Open Air Post Office, the…read morefirst of its kind. I once worked near here, actually at a few places, all walking distance, and this is the post office I would use. I can't comment on how it functions as a post office now, but as a bit of "local flavor" it's pretty cool. I say this for two reasons. One is the obvious cool factor. Built in the Mediterranean Revival style and completed on September 27, 1917, it's a throwback to a different era. The lines and curves of this building are like no other post office that I know of. Sam H. uploaded a good series of pictures showing off the beauty of this post office. The other reason it has a bit of local flavor is for the rather seedy crowd that seems to gather. A sign warns that if you are not here on post office business, the police are authorized to act as agents for the post office and remove trespassers. I can't imagine what led to the need for that sign (proximity to Williams Park maybe?), but since it's open air, it's means access to the PO boxes is also pretty easy, and 24 hours. No other 24 services exist though. In the north west corner of the open air part a flight of stairs leads up to the historic museum. I did not have a chance to confirm that it's still in operation, but if you are a post office aficionado, it may be worth a look. On April 4, 1975, this post office was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It was built by Virginia Hernandez (Bailey) Tucker (1844-1931). She was the daughter of William James Bailey, a colonel during the Second Seminole War. He was stationed at nearby Fort Brooke in Tampa. Colonel Bailey purchased the land and nearby natural springs in 1855 and made the spring waters available for public use! Life is good with local history that's been preserved.

Blink and you'll miss it…read more Hugging the west coast of Florida at St. Joseph Sound 4 miles north of Dunedin and about 1 mile south of Palm Harbor is a hidden Pinellas County gem. Folks traveling along ALT 19 pay no attention while they're caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily automobile traffic. If people slow down a bit, and hit the Pinellas trail, the old rail line bulges west just north of Curlew and harkens back to a more simple time. The first home built here was in 1875, and as more folks settled in Florida during the golden citrus years, this village saw sleepy prosperity with its orange groves and fishing wharfs buzzing with activity. Tampa Road, which originated here, was the first paved road leading into Tampa, directly connecting the big city with Oldsmar, Dundein, Palm Harbor and Ozona. Things are obviously much different now. The village is quiet, laid back and the vibe is a kin to Cedar Key on a Monday night. They've got their own post office, a BBQ joint, pizzeria, pub and plenty of coastal property to catch a sunset. To me, this place is far removed from traffic, tourism, unexploited, raw and uncut--pure Florida. I absolutely love it. Oh, and all streets are golf cart friendly.

Peering inside, I could see that its badly deteriorated, yet the outside did retain a lot of its old fashioned charm. Not sure what the plan is for this house's fate, but I though I'd pay it a visit and see it before it does get demolished.

Yes, the bridges are one way. The bridge's origins trace back to the early twentieth century, when the area around the Tampa Bay Hotel was transforming from a remote outpost into a connected urban district. Henry Plant had already insisted that Lafayette Street be extended and bridged to support his hotel, and that same logic of connectivity carried southward along the river. This bridge takes you directly past Tampa General Hospital. The design is restrained and businesslike, low concrete railings, rhythmic balusters, and a profile that sits lightly on the water. The structure's is on durability and continuity rather than spectacle and while it's been reinforced and updated in the decades since construction, the basic form remains consistent with the city's early twentieth century approach to river infrastructure, where even the quieter bridges were designed to harmonize with the riverfront rather than dominate it.
