The area was home to African American businesses, theaters, a casino, and churches and is now home to Chief's Creole Cuisine, Lorene's Fish House, and several other African American businesses, shops and eateries. There are also several churches. It's interesting to travel back in time and learn about the life here during segregation including the cultural traditions of St. Pete's African American community. Signage discusses the business owners, the civic associations, and the art institutions that developed in the area. The Pier has parking but it gets really busy during weekends so best to park nearby or at one of the parking garages. You will enjoy the walk towards the Pier. The area has many restaurants and bars. There are also family areas like a splash pad and playground for the kids. You will also find a small spa beach for swimming and sunbathing just in front of the Pier. Many walk ways, a park and a market all nearby. The market was closed at night though. Once you get to the Pier you'll get a great view of the bay and beautiful skyline. The Pier has a roof top restaurant called The Teak that has an amazing panoramic view. My husband explicitly ordered two plain, non-alcoholic tonic waters. The bartender negligently poured vodka into both glasses instead. When the error was caught, the bartender apologized profusely, admitted the mistake, and explicitly stated the order was "on the house." In good faith, my husband handed the bartender a $10 cash tip for correcting the issue, and we left. We were never given an itemized receipt. Later, I discovered The Floridian Social charged my credit card an outrageous $66.04 anyway. I disputed the charge through my bank in January, forcing a partial refund of $27.82. However, the venue is actively fighting to keep the remaining $38.22 balance. Management responded to my formal regulatory complaints by claiming they don't record audio on their security cameras, so they refuse to honor their own employee's verbal agreement. They pocketed a $10 cash tip and are unethically forcing a bank dispute over $38.22 for two plain, non-alcoholic club sodas because they got caught serving alcohol to a sober customer. Extremely deceptive billing practices and zero accountability. Check your credit card statements very carefully if you visit this place.

Well I thought I would pop off a review for the very architecturally cool Open Air Post Office, the…read morefirst of its kind. I once worked near here, actually at a few places, all walking distance, and this is the post office I would use. I can't comment on how it functions as a post office now, but as a bit of "local flavor" it's pretty cool. I say this for two reasons. One is the obvious cool factor. Built in the Mediterranean Revival style and completed on September 27, 1917, it's a throwback to a different era. The lines and curves of this building are like no other post office that I know of. Sam H. uploaded a good series of pictures showing off the beauty of this post office. The other reason it has a bit of local flavor is for the rather seedy crowd that seems to gather. A sign warns that if you are not here on post office business, the police are authorized to act as agents for the post office and remove trespassers. I can't imagine what led to the need for that sign (proximity to Williams Park maybe?), but since it's open air, it's means access to the PO boxes is also pretty easy, and 24 hours. No other 24 services exist though. In the north west corner of the open air part a flight of stairs leads up to the historic museum. I did not have a chance to confirm that it's still in operation, but if you are a post office aficionado, it may be worth a look. On April 4, 1975, this post office was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
