I've been an architect for 30 years so I've inspected a lot of construction work and I can honestly say that the retaining wall exceeded my expectations in every way. I expected to get a replica of the original wall but got something far better in both appearance and quality. The team of masons were courteous and finished the project without skipping any days. They also cleaned up every day and left my yard cleaner than they found it when the project was finished. All of my immediate neighbors have complimented me on the wall and I expect to get many more when boating season on the lake begins next May. I solicited multiple bids for the wall project and selected AJ Masonry because they were the most informative and responsive to changes related to the Lynn Conservation Commission and Building Department. AND the VERY NEXT DAY, a SATURDAY mind you, he and his son arrived at 8:00 AM and the job was completed by 3:00 PM. The masonry was built in the perfect straight line as it should be. I like that, and that's the only two pros of this operator. Actually there are a few more cons about what their works, but I select only two points which really upset me. First Cons, compared to what they did, it's terribly overpriced! We called 5 different companies to discuss restoration of my masonry and estimate the cost. All of them estimated the range of the cost from 2000-3200$ for rebuilding the masonry only. When we first talked to Steve at the beginning, he told us that it'd help and prevent lots of problems in the future if he can install the drainage system in our new masonry which total costs 4500$ for restoration + waterproofing + drainage, so it won't be damaged easily later. We're willing to pay this cost, as the drainage system sounds wonderful and he seemed to know his job well. He didn't tell us exactly what the new drainage will look like, but we let him do it, since we first believed him that he's professional. They took a few days to complete. The day before the final day, Steven came to check and asked us to pay the last 70% payment. We noticed that the constructors rebuilt only the masonry, but nothing else. I'm afraid that he might forget about the waterproofing + drainage, so we reminded him what he promised. Steven said "Oh yeah? did I say that too?". Well, I don't really appreciate the way he responded, it sounded like he didn't know what he promised to do, it's not a very professional manner. Then on the final day, the constructors said they were done with their work, I went there to check the final result. I asked the constructors if he put the waterproofing on our masonry, one of them rolled his eyes to us and threw the same question on his colleague instead. His colleague seemed unsatisfied that I reminded them of these, and he said "OK, I can do it". I mean WHAT IS THIS?? They didn't know what they needed to do? And it sounded like we asked them to do extra work which is not. This is not a professional way at all. It's like if we had not enough time to keep our eyes on every single step, all of them tend to forget and skip what we are supposed to get. I don't know if they're genuinely forgetful only this time or if they always did this to every busy house owner, but I'm not appreciate that at all. However, that is not the worst part of my experience yet. Secondly, my worst part is his drainage! When I saw their new drainage system, I was shocked, didn't know if I should start laughing or crying first! It's completely ridiculous, I don't know how they called it 'drainage system'. They just simply removed my old small higher drain pipe, and replaced it with a bigger pipe at the lower position, that's it! (I don't have a photo of my original pipe, but it looks exactly the same as the next one to it.) I wanted to cry and laugh at the same time. They did what they said, but the way they did it is not what I expected at all. From the front, when concrete is completely dried, it's not even look neat, especially when compared to other construction companies, I paid +1300$ extra for his drainage system!! This is totally ridiculous. In conclusion, I HIGHLY NOT RECOMMEND THEM at all. I paid total of 4,500$ for 1'x1'x31' masonry rebuilding + drainage. It's such a small job with a high price but I still didn't get professional service. Extremely disappointed. My personal advice is please hire other companies, especially for the home owners who don't have much time to follow up their work everyday.
