Make sure to always check how full the ferries are so you know how early you should arrive to get on your preferred sailing! We arrived just under an hour before the 6:40 pm ferry on Sunday and ended up being one of the first cars in line, which was great! While you're waiting for the ferry to arrive, you can head over to the beach and enjoy the beautiful BC views. There are also a couple of places where you can grab a bite to eat, so you don't have to wait in the long ferry line for White Spot! Wait times are crazy. Reservations are difficult to make. There's literally one food spot that's closed half the time. This place is chud.

Easy to get to, especially on week day afternoons. Avoid long weekends and peak travel periods for a less stressful and smoother experience. I decided not to make reservation on the ferry after I read about other travelers' experience -- if it is very busy and the line of cars stretched for miles, it may be hard for you to even get into the right lane meant for those who reserved (required to check in an hour before departure). So to me, reservation does not really mean anything as you can still miss your ferry if it is really busy. So I decided to travel on non peak hour, giving myself ample time to get to the terminal. It was not a full ferry that afternoon. I just wish the markings for the lanes on the road are clearer (could use a fresh coat of paint), or have some signs overhead or by the side to indicate the lane numbers. I went to the wrong lane initially before realizing my mistake. As it was not busy, I managed to cut through many lanes to get to the correct one. While waiting for the ferry, you could put the car in park, and check out the various stalls along the side. Get ice cream, popcorn and snack food. Or get some stuff to remind you of the Sunshine coast. There is a small eating area with tables and benches. Washroom is available inside the terminal. Get here early if you plan on leaving Gibsons as the ferry fills quickly. Many trucks load up the ferry too. Some cute shops to peruse while waiting for the ferry and a small food stand with coffee, ice cream and snacks. There are benches outside and an indoor seating area too. Sassy gal working the ferry booth told us good luck on getting on the ferry back to West Vancouver. We missed it by just a few cars. Signs are marked very clearly as well as the lanes. read more

As a tip don't be just on time - come early especially on Sunday. The line can get pretty long on Sunday and you might need to wait for the next ferry if you don't come early. I have to say its very organized here. Signs are very clear. Once you are on assuming you a taking your car with you, the staff are very directive in where you should park your car. It's a lovely practice that the ferry staff wish everyone a happy new year during the sailings. Kinda helps to keep the transit experience from feeling overly corporate. Gibson side experience differed greatly from the Horseshoe Bay. The departing trip was marred with confusion having missed the 1:20 sailing that was listed as 1:35 due to a glitch that didn't update the schedule beyond Oct 2013 on my (usually)handy iPhone. So instead of cruising into boarding we were told sales were held for the next sailing 2hrs later- yikes. We were saved by local Starbucks for Java and wifi but having never chosen to leave the ferry cue with the car then had NO idea of how to return to the vehicle ticket purchase area and car cue. Through a series of potentially highly illegal reverse driving maneuvers found our way back to the car ticket cue. Proceeded to get somehow lost while looking for lane 82 (which can only be found if there is enough thoroughfare to the front section of car cue). We found absolutely NO BC Ferrie employee to aid us in the next massive reverse driving expedition. In fact I suspect tower employees got a good laugh watching us try to navigate the 'real-life' version of the puzzle game Traffic Jam in trying to get to the needed wheelchair access lane. When we finally found an employee to assist they did reassure us that we were not the FIRST to be stuck in that way- which kinda led to my belief that there were birds-eye view bets on how long and how many moves we would take to get our car to the correct exit.
