The culture is amazing; almost no one is talking or making a fuss nor are there a lot of the aforementioned 'content creator'. Agreeing with the consensus that the staff is kind and efficient. 5 stars on this locally owned gym was easy to write, but I almost don't want to post so I can keep this gym a secret. As a previous college athlete, I love the environment and I'm excited to get back into my old shape hahaha. The cleanest gym I've been to. With the 'no contract and no start up fee' standard, commuting to this gym is still a no brainer even if it does add a bit more travel time. The popular '$200 a month, class based' gyms in the city are extremely overly priced and I (respectfully) think they are suited for a particular type of person. I write this review as someone who has solely weight lifted for years, then cross trained, then prepped, etc. Lifting for 10 years now, I've been to a lot of different gyms and I agree with another comment about 'feeling at home' (which is especially important as a girl at a gym that's mostly men!) I look forward to updating my review :D

There are several distinct spaces that make it feel like you can find a corner of the gym and focus. The space isn't overly loud and there is great natural light. The sheer amount of equipment is impressive. The staff are really nice and helpful, they know most members by name which is great. Pricing is competitive. Locker rooms could probably use an overhaul and there aren't amenities like saunas, but overall really nice gym.

Before I started with Wikidfit, I was already a member at a gym chain in Boston and I considered signing up for their personal training, but I didn't like the format: it was too formulaic, too expensive and their trainers were too inexperienced. I wanted to find someone who could engage my head while I learned; I didn't need someone to simply sound motivating while they walked me through a set of exercises. Dale's style was exactly what I was looking for: he explains the theory behind what he is doing. He works with each person differently, depending on their goals (yes, even when working with multiple people at a time). He focuses on form and proper mechanics--even after a year I still have much to learn! Each workout is different and I usually leave every 45 minute session feeling like I put everything I had into it. A year later I am stronger, I have built a healthy habit and I'm continuing to learn--it has been a great match.

Unfortunately, my experience was overshadowed by one major issue: the trainer's attitude. There's a big difference between being tough and being discouraging. I came in excited and ready to work, but that enthusiasm didn't last long. From the very first session, I felt more criticized than coached. Corrections were delivered with a tone that felt less like guidance and more like condescension. At times, it honestly felt like the trainer was more interested in pointing out what I was doing wrong than helping me improve. I get that some people thrive on the "no-nonsense" approach -- but there's a fine line between pushing someone and shutting them down. Several times, I left class feeling worse about myself than when I walked in, and that's not why I signed up. A little empathy goes a long way, especially in a fitness environment where people are already vulnerable. If you're looking for a place that emphasizes progress and encouragement, you might want to keep looking.

I have done work with a few different personal trainers over the years. After a shoulder injury…read morelast year I decided to get back into personal training to help me strengthen my core and upper body. I specifically chose this gym due to several reviews that specifically indicated that John has experience working with people who have sustained injuries. I also really liked that it was a private gym and that street parking was super easy. John was able to accommodate me quickly and at my preferred 6pm time. He was pretty flexible and offered some good rates. I was a little apprehensive at purchasing 20 sessions for $1200 (and having to pay upfront), but the more you buy the less you pay per session and it seemed to me that this was pretty common among personal trainers. I had liked what he had to say at our initial consultation and so I decided to go for it. Unfortunately for me that was a big mistake, and my only hope is that I can prevent someone else from doing the same. - On the website it states you get a personalized fitness assessment that includes measurement of body mass index, weight and circumferences at every workout. I was NEVER measured, not even once, in the approx 10 sessions I completed. - It also states he will provide nutritional guidance. He did this twice. 1- Asked me what I had for dinner, I gave a good answer and that was the end of that discussion. 2- Asked me what I had for breakfast, and told me to add eggs or something protein rich as soon as I woke up. - Does not provide time for stretching or guidance on how to stretch at home. First time ever I have never received guidance on something so vital to weight training. I took it upon myself to ask questions on how to best stretch my shoulder and he did provide guidance but only after being asked and never again after that. - Constantly on his phone during the one hour work out. Not even just a check here or there, CONSTANT. I grew extremely frustrated and would call out to ask him if I was doing something correctly. As a professional, save an emergency, you should NEVER be on your phone while a client is performing exercises that could injure them. - My work outs also seemed very cookie cutter, and solely based on weight training. I have had many sessions that incorporated cardio and weights and asked him about adding cardio. He said it would come in time. Half way through my sessions and there was never cardio. It also appeared to me that I was doing all the same workouts as the guy in the time slot ahead of me. The workouts rarely varied, and if they did it was by one different exercise. (One session arms, the other legs). With that being said, John was cognizant of my shoulder injury in that he would ask how it was feeling and did not try to push too hard if I said it was hurting; or he would end the session early. The problem though is that my sessions were still not designed around my injury. I know that personal training helped John after his own injury but I feel as though he thinks everyone will respond like he did, when that is not the case, as all injuries are different. Add to that the fact that he wasn't watching closely the majority of the time, and there is a large window for error. So while he did ask those questions, they weren't enough. An hour of weights on a weak shoulder was likely too much and the whole session should have been more varied, in my opinion; and should have definitely incorporated stretching. As you may have guessed by now I re-injured my shoulder. I also pulled my other shoulder performing a sit up with a weight. I saw an Ortho specialist who recommended Physical Therapy and to stop my Personal Training. I have now started intensive physio for my shoulders. I told John about this and requested a refund. Although I didn't sign anything, there is apparently a paper on the wall that says no refunds, and he tells me I can come back at anytime. When I further stated that I was injured and there should be some difference (I am not just quitting) he said he would get back to me. He never did, so I texted him a couple weeks later. He did not respond again. To me, this is completely unprofessional and irresponsible. I am now at a point where I will cut my losses of approx $600 because I do not feel safe coming back at any time, even when I am rehabilitated. Bottom line: I do not recommend this personal trainer. Please don't waste your money like I did. I have had several other trainers who are much more professional and experts in their field who I felt safe with. If you do come here I implore you to only purchase a few sessions until you know what the sessions are like, but I am telling you, this is nothing compared to what you can get with a real pro.

She is a great instructor, always tweaking the formats to improve our workouts and eliciting feedback from members to ensure we are getting the most out of each class. Boxing HIIT encompasses circuits including boxing combos on the bag, alternating with HIIT (eg burpees, jump squats, jumping jacks, etc), with rounds of dumbbell work and abs mixed in. It is truly a full body workout. I took my boyfriend to a class and he was absolutely drenched in sweat by the end. Strength and conditioning is more of a traditional circuit format with alternating exercises focused on strengthening your arms, legs, back, and core. They also have boxing technique classes, youth boxing, and kickboxing classes throughout the week, and now sparring on Sunday. They just introduced women's only kickboxing class on Saturday morning which I am super excited to try out! Overall such a great addition to the JP community and one of my fav local businesses.

I finally found a gym that fits my schedule, my personality, my budget, and my scientifically proven need to cuss up a storm while doing kettlebell squats. (See: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-do-we-swear/) First of all, it's 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You get your tag and swipe yourself in. If you want to workout at 11pm on a Friday night or 5am on a Tuesday morning, you're covered. They have panic buttons you can wear if you're there alone. I chose a 6 month membership for myself and my spouse and our rate is $80 for us both, which is quite reasonable. They also have a bowl of Kind bars. So if you worked out and you're hungry and staring across the street at Dunkin', you can grab a free healthy bar and resist. The facility is super. The gym is cozy and comfortable, with brand new weight machines, treadmills, bikes, mats, free weights, a punching thingy (I think that's the technical term), jump ropes, and various and sundry necessary fitness equipment. Even the bathrooms here are spacious and comfortable, offering scales, showers, and spotless commodes. But the excellent facilities and machines and free granola bars are not the end of the story. The place is staffed by some very dedicated professionals, including the magnificent no-nonsense trainer, Crystal. She will push you to your limit and then some, all while cheering you on as you try not to die from the umpteenth bicep curl. She has makeup like a beauty queen, a mouth like a sailor, and you get 3 personal training sessions when you sign up so she will whip you into shape and give you a customized workout plan you can do on your own. And the people who come to the gym are regular people looking to get fit. There are no crazed 88lb gymbunnies. There are no creepy orange guys with bulging veins. No one is making snide remarks about what people can or can't lift. This is the first gym I've been to where I don't feel judged, and that's the best feature of all!
