I cannot recommend this forensic accounting firm based on my experience…read more I retained them for forensic accounting work and paid substantial fees, even though much of the work product required significant corrections on my part. Despite my concerns about the quality of the work, I paid those invoices to avoid further disputes. The final straw was an invoice for approximately $4,500 to perform what was presented as an interest calculation. Out of curiosity, I later tested the same calculation using a modern AI tool, which completed it almost instantly. Whether one uses AI or traditional methods, I found it impossible to justify a $4,500 charge for that task. I disputed the invoice and, as a compromise, offered to pay 10% ($450), which I did. Rather than recognizing the legitimate billing concern, the firm continued insisting that the full amount was owed. My experience left me with the impression that billing took priority over delivering value. I expected expertise, efficiency, and professional judgment. Instead, I felt I paid premium rates for work that required my own corrections, followed by an attempt to collect what I considered an excessive fee for a relatively straightforward calculation. Others considering this firm should carefully review engagement terms, scrutinize invoices, and ask detailed questions about how work will be performed and billed before proceeding.

As a small business, our corporate and individual tax returns have gone up every year that we have…read moreworked with them. Additionally, they have problems maintaining employees and have had to work with new people every single year. When we go in for very specific Quickbooks work, they always have "billed us" for additional time they needed to review our Quickbooks. At the end of the day, if you are a SMB business, you are probably better off going with another CPA firm.....who will treat you with a bit more respect and understands what it's like to be a small business and will treat you accordingly. Additionally, working with some of the people there is sometimes good and sometimes bad. The main reason things are bad, is b/c their is a Senior Manager who lacks any "bedside manner" and will make you feel stupid for asking him questions about your tax return. Each year we have also had mistakes that they didn't account for...i.e. they forgot to include our benefits as tax deductible items and they left off the fact that we pre-paid our taxes. These were both mistakes that we found.....which ultimately left us wondering what else have they missed???? The partner that brought us to the firm left shortly after she "sold us" on working with them.

I don't have prior experience with CPAs, so I have nothing to compare Thiem & McCutcheon to, but…read moreBen McCutcheon is awesome. The last couple of years, I could not and cannot bear the thought of seeing how much I pay the government out of my paycheck, nor how much I pay them in student loan interest, so I stuff all of my papers (admittedly not many) into a Ziplock bag and take them to Ben. He's so nice and has never once made me feel rushed during his hectic tax season. He answers all my questions and acts as a semi-counselor as I bitch and moan about taxes. They also upload Sharefile links to you each year which gives you notice to get your stuff together and is super easy in case you don't feel like getting downtown to see them. Check Ben out!

We have been using David Thiem, CPA, for over 40 years to do both our personal and business taxes…read moreand have NEVER had a problem with either he or his firm. They have helped us with payroll questions for our business and they do as little or as much as we need help with. Our personal returns are quite complicated because of the businesses we own and sometimes our returns are over 150 pages! We happily pay our bill each year and always check the square for IRS or SC Tax Commission to speak to Mr. Thiem regarding our information if need be. Mr. Thiem has represented us in two or three separate audits and they have all come out favorably - he stands behind what he puts on paper, so be truthful to him! He always knows that we need an extension and automatically files one for us - what a great person to have on your side! With Mr. Thiem nearing retirement, we hope that Mr. McCutcheon will be ready to handle all of our business (which we don't doubt for a second!) as we will stay with this long-established firm! You won't be sorry if you go to them, they are very professional and the tax people know and respect this firm!!
