Lighthouse Marine Park - View from beach~

    Lighthouse Marine Park

Rocks, driftwood and the open sea: this is a quaint little park that (for a mainland Washingtonian)…read moreis a bit of an odyssey to visit. A tiny community subsisting on "tourist" dollars from Canada (man, I sure hope they are doing alright, with the borders being closed due to COVID), Point Roberts was a bucket list item of mine, being one of the few enclaves in the US. Due to a geographic anomaly placing the peninsula below the 49th Parallel, it requires two border crossings (and a passport) to reach it by land. Canadians often come here for the cheap gasoline and liquor (truly the hallmarks of American culture!), and to park their yachts and boats cheaply. My wife and I spent an afternoon walking the beach, with the warm sun on our face, and a few Canadian families enjoying American FREEDOM nearby (yes, I am being cheeky). There are some covered patio spaces with tables for such activities, and although they are quickly claimed, you can pretty much setup a picnic anywhere: there are plenty of logs that will serve the same purpose. I can't say what it's like during the "busy" season, but during our visit in mid-August, the atmosphere was jovial, the people were pleasant, and there were no crowds whatsoever. Lighthouse Marine Park is the perfect, quiet seaside escape for those looking for a peaceful beach in which to relax on a warm day with family and friends.

I like this park. The picnic and pavilion area has been spruced up so it looked pretty inviting…read more Visiting the park in spring is definitely better than winter. It is not as cold unless it is a windy day. So definitely bring a jacket. The walking trail round the coast is not very long and it will probably take about an hour or less for a slow stroll. There are many birds - crows and gulls. There is a lighthouse which is not a pretty building. It looks very basic and is not a tower like building. This is also the whale migration route. But I have yet to see any whales or the seals or sea lions or porpoises. So sad. I have only seen ducks bobbing along near the shoreline. When the weather is nice, this is a good place to just sit on the many benches and chill, looking at the sea. For kids, there is a "fort" made of branches and twigs. I have seen many children having fun there, climbing up to the top or adding more branches to fortify it. I also saw a group of children with their teachers or some adults with garbage bags cleaning the shore area. Kudos. But generally the place is clean, I do not see much garbage left behind.

Went for lunch after shopping at the big mall. Had to put lotsa mayo to make it edible. Side of Caesar salad was well tossed. One of the worst restaurant burgers $24 Korean chicken Burger--overcooked chicken breast so dry again, not juicy at all. Sweet seasoning nil spice, how can they call it Korean? $24 Coconut calamari-- did not use baby squid, used sliced formed cuttlefish in thick batter. No squid taste at all $19 Eggs Benedict-- OK but lukewarm food. $19+ $5 fruit plate( didn't tell us fruit cost extra, only ask if we want salad or fruit.) Waiter was busy with 2 large tables, did not look over our table at all so I went to bar tender to get some mayo and ketchup and he brought us some much later. Water was never refilled, he was busy. We will not return nor recommend.

The overall welcome was lacking, and there was little effort made to make us feel like valued guests. Several aspects of the dining room gave the impression that maintenance and cleanliness need more attention. The salt and pepper grinders were dirty, the bench seating was noticeably worn and peeling, and a bottle of cleaning solution was left next to a dining table. The bench cushion at our table was sticky and had to be cleaned after we pointed it out. Service was disappointing. Drinks were simply placed at the far end of the table, several feet away from the person who ordered them, without napkins or any acknowledgment from the server. Throughout the meal, the wait staff was adequate but did nothing that stood out as attentive or welcoming. As for the food, it was acceptable but not memorable. The Korean-style chicken wings were the highlight of the meal, with good flavor and sauce. The chicken bites were also good, although spicier than expected. The bruschetta was enjoyable, and the lettuce wraps had only a mild level of spice. However, none of the dishes were exceptional or compelling enough to make us eager to return. Overall, the restaurant has potential, but improvements in cleanliness, atmosphere, and customer service are needed. The food was decent, but the overall experience fell short of expectations.
