What a lovely health food store! As soon as I walked into the shoppe I knew I was going to love it!…read moreIt is small, but well stocked with just about every imaginable item. We were in PEI for a family vacation in September and we made a special trip into Charlottetown to enjoy the sights but also to come to the Root Cellar for some essentials that we needed back at our cottage. Among the things that I came in looking for was activated charcoal and admittedly I was a bit disappointed that the store did not carry it. It was explained to me by the sales assistant that the local supplier does not have this particular item in their inventory but they were working on locating it elsewhere. Despite not being able to get activated charcoal, I was truly impressed with the selection of products. The Root Cellar must have the best selection of Weleda products outside of Switzerland! And a huge assortment of all-natural toothpaste and personal hygiene products and lotions specifically designed for babies. Also, in the back of the store there is an impressively large selection of non-perishable grocery items. I walked out of the store with a bunch of things and wishing that there was a Root Cellar in Montreal.

A small store but it had everything I needed from a general store during my trip. The items are…read morecheap and the store has various sales and deals for buying in bulk! Would recommend for people in the area in need of general items!

Bulk barn is a bulk food store that sells things like a variety of grains , flours , powdered…read moresauces ,cous cous, noodles, powdered drinks, nuts, dried fruits , a huge variety of candy , and snacks , cold pie fillings , granola etc. They even carry organic and sprouted items at decent prices. I would love to see them continue to expand their organic line. They carry Nature's path products , dog and small animal food plus soap and they even rent out baking pans . They have a huge variety of them. I have visited 3 Bulk Barns Charlottetown, Moncton and Summerside and truth be told if it was not for bulk barn I would have starved the first month I was in this area. While I may eat junk food when I am out at home I cook healthy organic vegan / veggie stuff which for some reason has not really caught on here in Eastern Canada. Anyway that being said this Bulk Barn is larger then the one in Summerside and about the same size as the one in Moncton, hence they carry more items then the Summerside one. Also just a warning their prices are excellent on some things and highway robbery on others PLUS not everything here is healthy , its just as bad filled with preservatives and chemicals and fattening so READ the little red & white recipe/ ingredient cards they have on each barrel.

This is probably more of a review of Bulk Barn as a whole and not just the store in Charlottetown…read more But I love everything about Bulk Barn. I've been to stores in Charlottetown, Moncton, Halifax, Toronto, Montreal, and St John's. I love the concept and business model of bulk stores and would love to see them in the US.

My brother and sister-in-law gave my husband and I a gift box from Maritime Madness for Christmas…read more Maritime Madness is a Canadian company, from you guessed it, The Maritimes! They specialize in hot sauces, spicy rubs and spicy peanut brittle. We got 4 bottles of hot sauces and a bag of Ghost Pepper Peanut Brittle. I went on the website to report prices for y'all, lol. Most of their bottles of hot sauces are $9.95, there are a few that are more expensive. They come in plastic squeeze bottles instead of the usual glass bottles that hot sauces come in. The Mustard Pickle one is delicious on burgers. With a burn rating of 6 (I think their hottest is 12) it has a bit of a kick but no mouth on fire burn, lol. The Moonshine Habanero I believe is their original hot sauce. It's quite spicy with a burn rate of 9. It tastes more like a "regular" hot sauce as opposed to the more creative flavours ones. I like the more unusual flavours, but hot sauces purists will enjoy this one. The Tropical Habanero one is excellent. It has flavours of mango and pineapple, two of my favourite fruits. It's pretty spicy with a burn rate of 10. I don't find it spicer than the Moonshine Habanero though. The Candied Blueberry one is unusual. It's burn rating is only 4 so it's really mild with just the slightest twinge of spice. It's really sweet. It goes well with cream cheese, goat cheese or brie to add a bit of sweet and spicy to your sandwiches. This one is a bit less versatile, but very unique. Spicy peanut brittle are $4.95 a bag. The Ghost Pepper one is pretty spicy, but not unbearably so. It's a nice twist on regular peanut brittle. The peanut brittle is good too, it's crunchy and buttery, and doesn't stick to your teeth. Their online store doesn't carry all their products, as they have in-store exclusives, like beef jerky! Not sure if I'll ever be in Montague, PEI, where their flagship store is, but they also have a store in the Founders Hall and Market in Charlottetown, PEI, and I'm very likely to be there sometime in the future! I'll be sure to look for their in-store exclusives! So I used to make fun of those people who put hot sauce on everything, but Maritime Madness has turned me into one of those people. I don't know whether to say "Damn you, Maritime Madness!" or "Thank you, Maritime Madness!" Lol.

Visited the Maritme Madness booth inside the Founders' Food Hall & Market . I was looking around…read morethe market after finding what I wanted from the Notables by PEI. I love hot sauces, but the beef jerky caught my eye. The hot n spicy is too much ghost pepper, and it lacks flavoring despite my love for spice. The sweet n hot has the right balance of texture, and flavoring, although it could use a bit more heat. For a side bar, small batch product,Red Clay beef jerky is better than Jack Link jerky's original in my opinion. The bad,it means they don't meet the requirements to ship outside PEI due to Canada beef licensing rules.Y'all will have to return,or ask folks you know to pick some Red Clay jerky up when they visit:)
