Tucked into the neighbourhood beside Victoria Park, this place is a gem filling in the gaps from the chain grocery stores more north and offering some fresh local and both domestic and imported artisan goods. The owners are just the most friendly and sweetest people bringing a very homey and loving vibe to all the products. So much middle eastern selection too! Fine oils and spices, eastern baked treats, and a ton of dried goods like beans and rice. They have a great selection of island produce and meats/dairy coming straight from the farms into the coolers. The freezer also features some of their own falafel or local made meal items. The aged Island cheeses and dips are fantastic too. Something real special here is the small selection of baked goods from Montreal including Fairmont Bagels!!!! I love the Markouk unleavened bread and can't wait to go back for some baked treats or baklava! Oh yes, I will indeed be a regular here!!

I asked the friendly beautician if I could take some perfume samples with me as I was traveling from another province. She gladly gave me some. My husband and I also bought some snacks for the road. If you blink you may miss it…read more Though it is a small shop it is packed with authentic Chinese & Japanese ingredients for cooking as well as some frozen heat and serve Asian foods including Vegetarian staples. Chili paste, oils and dry peppers, noodles ( ready to make & plain so you can add your own ingredients ) ramen, soba , somen, Cheong ,Mi Xian. ( some of these are from memory but there is both Japanese & Chinese noodles) They have various sauces and flavored cooking oils, several types of rice ( Cal Rose short grain , long grain jasmine ect.) They also have teas, sweets ,ice cream, ginger, adzuki beans ( you can make adzuki bread or adzuki buns!) There were more things packed into this neat , clean and well organized small shop but well worth the trip for items that are not at the regular grocery store. I only wish they had enough room for fresh veggies but I am grateful for what they do have. I am so happy we found this store and will be back for more supplies.

Don't be afraid to check out the fridge and freezers for more items. Nothing here is particularly expensive. The staff is friendly as well. Overall, it's great that we have such good access to Asian food in a city as small as Charlottetown, so I try to shop here as often as possible (even for things I can get at the grocery store).

We were in PEI for a family vacation in September and we made a special trip into Charlottetown to enjoy the sights but also to come to the Root Cellar for some essentials that we needed back at our cottage. Among the things that I came in looking for was activated charcoal and admittedly I was a bit disappointed that the store did not carry it. It was explained to me by the sales assistant that the local supplier does not have this particular item in their inventory but they were working on locating it elsewhere. Despite not being able to get activated charcoal, I was truly impressed with the selection of products. The Root Cellar must have the best selection of Weleda products outside of Switzerland! And a huge assortment of all-natural toothpaste and personal hygiene products and lotions specifically designed for babies. Also, in the back of the store there is an impressively large selection of non-perishable grocery items. I walked out of the store with a bunch of things and wishing that there was a Root Cellar in Montreal.
