I set up the appointment. Electricians we've had in the past had charged by the hour and that is what we expected. Two technicians arrived, one leader and one in training. Immediately the leader started pitching surge suppressors. We would need two. He hadn't even determined that the storm was in fact the cause of our problem. A meter quickly showed that the problem was not just with the one outlet, but with that entire circuit. Oddly, the GFCI for that circuit was showing a solid green light at the box. At that point we were told there would be a $350+ charge for them to diagnose the problem (which he suggested might be very complicated and possibly serious) and fix it, or we could purchase two surge suppressors at a cost of $1400 which would include everything and provide protection for our home in the future. I should have paid the trip charge. This fee approach was presented to us as different "levels" with charges and discounts that seemed designed to confuse, all prefaced with the suggestion the diagnostic process might be quite complicated. Our house is well built and only 10 years old. We capitulated, ending up agreeing to have the surge suppressors installed. In no short order their diagnosis didn't take long. We a bad GFCI. So it was fixed, and we have protection in the future, but I can't help but feel they arrived with a preconceived concept to sell us the surge suppressors. When I said I would be writing a review online, the lead man immediately suggested I would be "threatening his job, his family and his livelihood". That didn't work. I would definitely not recommend this firm.
