We visited a number of schools and sought the the advice of countless friends and family before finally being introduced to Pine Street school. We attended an informational social which gave us the opportunity to meet faculty, parents, students, and learn more about the IB program and curriculum - we were blown away by the enthusiasm of the teachers, the global exposure the students had, and the close knit community we encountered there. But it was our children's response that really informed our decision to apply as they were eager to spend more time with everyone they met that evening and excited to learn more about the school. Fast forward to today and we couldn't be happier with the decision that we made. Pine Street School truly supports the whole child: the curriculum is rigorous and engaging, and we visibly see how they are preparing our children to go out and make a difference in the world. Students go on more field trips than any other school I've encountered - they really make sure that they have an opportunity to go out and experience the world. It is apparent that the thoughtful approach to learning supports the development of our children intellectually, emotionally, and socially and we couldn't be more pleased. And they continue to impress us and exceed our expectations, especially during this unprecedented time where our children need more love, support and consistency than ever; they are the only school that I know of that offers 4.5 hours of synchronous learning each day while school is physically closed due to social distancing! Incredible! They have managed to maintain the academic standards and preparation that we've become accustomed to during this challenging time: it doesn't get more committed than that. It's our family alma mater because my sisters went here and later, my nieces as well. Back in my day, the school was K-6 grades. Teachers & principals have come & gone, the school has been renovated & expanded, but it still has that neighborhood feel. There used to be a large schoolyard where we would run our silly little heads off during gym, recess & lunch, but is now the site of the building extension. I think they use the roof now for physical activities. Some old classmates that I have recently contacted are planning a get-together to reminisce about our days at PS130. I heard that Mr. Epstein is semi-retired and still works part-time as assistant principal! That's amazing! This review can't be complete without talking about food. I don't know how the food is these days (my son despises school food), but I thought school lunch then was pretty good. For a FOB Chinese kid exposed for the first time to hamburgers, pizza & fried chicken TV dinners? Remember your first time as a kid at McDonald's? It was like a gift of ambrosia from the heavens!

However, people who rent the basketball court there at night are B*i*t*c*hes: a bunch of 30 and 20 year olds who acted real tough (a few dudes acted like thugs) but call fouls on any sort of body contacts. I played through high school and college (division 2) on varsity team with real refs yet I have never got this many "foul calls" on defense. Then when I had the ball, a short player literally tackled my torso and knocked me to the floor but refused to call it a foul. Plus, they are surprisingly okey with playing on a rim that's at least two inches short; I knew this because I "accidentally" dunked on it. I guess the low rim fits their nonsensical and childish act on court. If you want to send your kids here, I highly recommend the school; if you want to find people playing basketball, this is not the place to go unless you want to deal with the bit*chy acts.

Both kids have probably learned more in the first 2 months at AOSJ than they learned at the public school in one year. We have two children at this school now. One is 8, the other is 5…read more Great stuff about this school I wrote about previously is still true -- small number of students for the 5 teachers on hand means the kids get a ton of attention that is exactly tailored to their own stage/age/interests and helps them move along a lot faster on the topics they are good at, and move well on the topics where they have difficulty -- there is a great mix of ages and styles around, and the mixed ages actually work together on stuff. Kids learn and see the good examples of kids 1-2 years older and that really motivates them to advance. "I want to do that!" At the same time, no stigma if you are a little behind on something and working with some other age groups -- Very little homework. It means the school time is working. Our kids are advancing quickly and doing a ton -- but teachers don't have to push off all the hard work to the parents in the evenings. There is tons of productive time in school since "classroom management" doesn't chew up half the time. What attracted me here, as a cognitive science PhD from Stanford myself, was the stellar intellectual grounding for the school its founder (Columbia PhD and former faculty) and multiple veteran and PhD educators on staff.

In the hallway on the last day of 2018-18 school (presentations day), some of the other dads and I compared notes and we found agreement in the following factors of QPS: 1. All our kids, without exception, love their school. Not like... love. Every dad in the group shared that our kids have never once tried to get out of going to school in the morning. Not a single time. Our kids love their school, tell us they love their school, and love going to school. This factor, if it were the only positive one, is extraordinary. 2. All our kids spend their school days learning "stuff", like kids in schools everywhere. However our QPS kids have all developed a strong ability to effortlessly synthesize all the stuff, and offer considered opinions to questions or topics that bridge multiple areas of knowledge. We agreed that our kids *think* first, and then *speak*. 3. The staff of QPS is uniformly excellent. From the principal to the PE coach, the TAs to the specialist learning consultants, the QPS teaching and learning team is literally amazing. QPS teachers enter into partnerships with our kids. Our kids feel validated in their individuality, and motivated to learn. My kid has been saying since his kindergarten year that he never wants to leave QPS. As a parent in today's NYC, I am deeply grateful that QPS offers my child such a safe, happy, inspiring place to grow into the confident and kind young man that he's clearly on track to become.
