I have been to this pub/restaurant several times over the years and at times it has been good! It is not good anymore. The service was decent and the cocktails were tasty but the food was terrible. I had the Butternut Squash Ravioli in Brown Butter Sauce..... I know, it sounds tasty right? I was in awe of what was served me. It looked like a pile of condensed cream of mushroom soup and was burnt. I know that brown butter is halfway to burnt butter, but apparently the chef didn't know the difference. In addition to being burnt, the sauce had a strange consistency and had dried cranberries, walnuts and goat cheese... the whole thing was disjointed to say the least. We get out for a kid free meal only a couple of times a year and can't help feeling like this was a waste. read more

The location was next to our hotel and overlooking the water which was pleasant although we opted to sit inside. The menu had a nice group of options and they had a kids menu as well. I had the scallops with bacon jam which was wonderful. I'd never seen that option before and it was such a great combination-great flavor. One of us had the mushroom sandwich and two had the pizza. Pretty underwhelming experience overall. Decided to try the salmon sandwich. It wasn't bad but it was quite tasteless. The worst part was the speed of service though. It was painfully slow. Beacon landing is a throwback to a grandiose time over done to a point of stale. But don't let that detract or discourage you from experiencing great service and good food. The hamburgers and fish & chips highlighted my experience. Simple and good. Though I would enjoy fresh cut fries, I'll hold that as a personal choice and not a complaint. Jamie at the bar tables gave just the right amount of friendly attentiveness, always having fresh drinks available without hovering. I have used Yelp for some years now, but never felt the need to sign up. Until now. We begin with a gin martini that only half fills the glass. Huh. Not a great start. Some bars have small pours, but usually they just give you a small glass. What a disappointment. Then the oysters. Skeletal. The ponzu buried what little flavor there was. But not enough to prevent noticing that you had to fish tiny slivers of shell out of your mouth. Then the soup of the day. An attractive sounding double smoked bacon and chicken. With. No. Bacon. Great location off the Sidney pier, but marked up prices as a result! We came here for brunch with friends and the place was pretty empty for a weekend. The menu is your standard fare with salads, burgers and sandwiches with some brunch specials. There's a bit more of a seafood focus. Hubby had one of their pizzas which was pretty average and I had their breakfast salad, which was a choice of meat or smoked salmon, poached eggs with hollandaise sauce, and hash browns on top of a salad. It wasn't bad, but definitely not worth the $17 I paid for it! Service is okay and atmosphere is nice, especially with the water views. Went to their website to check the menu before going as I am Vegan. The website advertised that they were vegan friendly. However, the vegan friendly options they offered for lunch/brunch was avocado on toast literally just avocado on toast for $16 and a salad with barely any ingredients because obviously being vegan means I'm a rabbit . I didn't want to leave because my husband is not vegan or vegetarian and we already made the effort to dine there being the website advertised vegan friendly which it is not. So, I had fries for lunch which was good hence the one stars and not one star review for misleading advertising. I totally understand a restaurant has NO obligation to cater to vegetarians or vegans but don't claim to be vegan friendly when you don't have ANY vegan dishes on the menu only lack luster modifications on regular menu items. We were very, very impressed by our food. We didn't expect much given the whole tourism aspect but we had perfectly cooked, fresh seafood presented beautifully with organic veggies to boot! The beers on tap are pretty decent, wine list is pretty bad (especially since there's great wineries in this region!) but the food was good/great. Our server was very attentive (think she was referred to in another review as rude and the manager?) and although we don't appear to be the type to throw money around, she was awesome from the get-go. Beautiful view and very tasty food. We enjoyed a very nice lunch at this restaurant. We had a sirloin burger with salad and the lamb sliders. My Mom raved about the salad that came with the meal and really liked the burger as well. My lamb sliders were terrific. Got out of the rain to find this waterfront pub for Sunday lunch . . . I ordered the roasted portobello mushroom sandwich ($13.00) on rye with the soup of the day. The bread was a light swirl rye perfectly toasted. The portobello and red pepper were nicely roasted with balsamic vinegar - the sandwich finished with cheddar cheese, mayo, lettuce and flavourless tomato (but it is winter). Still I liked this well-stuffed sandwich overall; it will be 4-star in summer if using local thick sliced fresh tomatoes . . . maybe fresh made pesto over mayo too. Ron ordered the wild boar, kangaroo, and elk sliders ($14) with fries. While the sliders were carefully prepared looking and skewered, he couldn't differentiate between the meat flavours. He said they were still lean and tasty. The fries were small portion, old, mushy tasting. Service was above-average. Views to the ocean. You can get the same menu on the other side of the venue, which is a restaurant allowing children. read more

We went with friends for dinner. The crab cakes were excellent with a little mango on top. I had the lamb and my wife had a wedge salad. Lamb was good and I even ate some vegetables. The good: My chicken club was top notch, great flavor although a bit thin on the chicken for $15 but I'd get it again. The bad: My waitress was horrible. I sat for almost 15 minutes before a different server pointed out that I was waiting. She disappears again until the food comes out and than *poof* gone again. I had to walk inside after having been finished for nearly 10 minutes to get my check. My water glass was empty for rough 25 min total. My wife and I popped in for a late lunch today. We were very pleased with the experience. The food was well prepared and tasty. My wife's salmon burger was great. A nice piece of fish on a fresh bun with nice dressing and bacon. The salad that came with it was a unique medley of tastes and textures - very enjoyable . I had the crab cakes. The only thing that gets them a star is there beautiful location. I was very disappointed with the food and the staff. I ordered the roasted cauliflower off of their entrée menu and literally only got a small head of cauliflower that was grilled. It tasted fine but they charged $17 for nothing. When we first arrived we were standing by the please wait to be seated sign for a bit until the bar tender looked at us and said "Uh.. you can come in." We sat down and were handed menus and off the bat they listed the things that they were out of. I don't believe I saw any of the staff members smile once, other then the chef in the back that was only wearing a tank top while he cooked. When the bartender put down to drinks on a couple's table beside us they both spilled. I didn't hear him apologize once and he was very rude about the clean up. He was more concerned about the chair then the customer who got wet. After talking to a more locals about this restaurant they all seemed to agree that they would not be return either after similar experiences. read more

I have eaten here over 50 times ... The food is always good in fact the new breakfast addition to the menu has been great. I will never return though 3 visits in a row I have been treated like a disease the attitude of the servers is unbelievable as if they themselves own the business however I believe this attitude trickles down from the "big boss man" the chef/manager/judge&jury every time I've eaten here I have to try and drown out his shouting and shit talking from the kitchen . Whether it's shitting on the servers verbally or if a customer has a complaint laughing out loud and making sure in his tough guy voice that people here him say " well they can go somewhere else then" . It's a shame they have a good thing but they are failing on a personal level . The owner needs to unload the girls working the front of the house and give the chef a reality check . read more

Decided to try this place after a very favorable, recent review in the Times Colonist (4.5 out of 5 stars). When we first arrived, I was helping my grandmother into her seat and we noticed that the cushion on the chair was quite wet. We alerted the waiter, and much to our surprise, instead of fetching a new chair or cushion (of which there many nearby), he simply flipped the wet one upside down. To be fair, this side was dry, but we all thought it was an unprofessional move. Still, I am not one to dwell on such things since restaurants are primarily about food. Unfortunately, this is where Beacon Landing really underwhelmed. I thought the dishes were all quite standard pub fare (and in the case of my sister's clam chowder, sub-standard) that really did little to impress any of us. Honestly, I was incredibly excited a the thought of eating some really excellent food at a pub... and perhaps the high expectations (from the article) contributed to my overall bland final impression, but I really was hoping for something special here. I had halibut and chips here...just for the halibut. (sorry, I can never resist cheesy)... I went here after an afternoon/evening of fishing with a couple customers. We didn't catch anything, but I did get to steer the boat for a while so all was well. I ordered the halibut because that's what I had hoped to catch...it was excellent! Atmosphere was so-so, could have had more personality for my liking, but I was happy with it anyways. The staff was very pleasant, the menu was typical of Bar & Grill type place, but the food was well presented, prepared and very timely to the table. Definitely one star... first walked in, lovely location with view but service wasn't super friendly. Order drink and got a big chunk of food in it when we were the only guests dining. They did get me a new cup but still charged us which is no big deal but still would've been nice. Next we ordered food and the $16 pizza on the menu was in fact smaller than the $11 pizza on the kids menu. Very uncool about it when we brought it up and basically just said " yep the kids just get a better deal"... and walked away. A very solid, seaside pub along the pretty Sidney water front. It's a clean, bright pub- the kind of place you could take your mother out to lunch at. We stopped here for a late lunch, and were both impressed! We shared the curry prawns- a mild yellow coconut curry- very good. Good service, nice view, and a varied menu. read more

We went back inside and were told, as there were 8 of us, that we would have to be split up, on separate tables. A sad mix of grey hair and depends each night. Server seated us and ignored us for ten minutes so we left. Menu is typical, smells like the crab crakes are ground right into the thick carpet floor. Ewe. Was told there would be a 20 minute wait on food. Didnt have the wearwithall for a 3 hour dining experience so we left, server was absent for first fifteen minutes. Won't be returning to this unfriendly dump. I am continually surprised at how low the standards really are in this town. Clearly staffing shortages are affecting these businesses. read more
