I was told when I went to pick it up that they couldn't find anything wrong other than a small piece of metal that they removed must have been cutting the sound out (did not test the guitar in the store just took their word). Come to find out, when I got it home, that the issue is the switch and that both pickups don't come on until the switch is midway between the middle and bridge position...you would think that when paying for a repair this is something they would figure out easily. Complete waste of money. I also asked them to take a look at a fret-buzz and they fully forgot so that was also somewhat annoying (I paid for a setup and repair). Guitar was exactly the same when I got it back down to the same exact fret-buzz. I was so dissatisfied that I refused to even drive back there to get a refund. Ultimately, untrustworthy. I believe whoever did the "repair" was deceitful to me. Now in all fairness, this was a few years back and the same people may not be working there anymore...I just thought of it again when I had to repair the exact same issues myself.

We found a few on Craigslist. We also found Country String Shop on Google and popped in for a look. Bob seemed a kind---albeit anxious---man. He shuttled us towards his most expensive violins in the thousands of dollars range and seemed annoyed when I asked about his less expensive violins. We tried several and went home to consider a Vuillaume copy though it was more expensive than we had wanted to spend. Later, I went to try a Strad copy from a Craigslist seller and learned that the Vuillaume copy at Country String Shop was actually his on consignment, which was merely an interesting point. A few days later, I returned to Bob Kain's and left a substantial deposit to try out two violins and several bows over a weekend, per purchasing protocol. I have never known any serious musician to purchase an expensive instrument or bow without first testing them in various acoustic settings. That Sunday, my husband and I performed with several different violins we were considering in a large hall at a local church that Sunday to test the performance power of each violin. The Strad copy easily outperformed the rest and was worth most for its price at only several hundred dollars. We purchased that one and a different Craigslist seller's Strad copy whose value-to-cost ratio was also extremely high. Despite not desiring to purchase either of his two violins at this time, we decided to purchase a case, bow, and strings from Bob to thank him for his time. Upon returning the instrument, I was only able to say, "Unfortunately" before Bob yelled at me, "I just knew you weren't going to buy this violin from me! You played me for a fool! You just needed a violin to play over the weekend! [Owner of Strad copy] came in earlier today and I know what games you guys are playing. You never were going to buy anything from me!" He threw my deposit check at me and stormed off. I was thunderstruck and never got a chance to thank him for his time and make the bow, case, and strings purchase. As we own five instruments and have numerous friends who would happily lend us violins were we in need, I must say we did not "just need a violin to play over the weekend." Had the Vuillaume copy strikingly outperformed the other violins we were considering, we would have made the purchase. Bob's accusations were misdirected and unfortunate. He later went on to tell other customers that I bought a violin from him and then returned it and demanded my money back. This is a complete fabrication, and I can show every carbon copy of my checkbooks and credit card history showing I never made such a purchase. Perhaps he decided that my deposit money was purchase money, but that would be highly delusional, as he gave me a receipt saying "Deposit for violin and 3 bows," not "Purchase." If he did believe my deposit to be a purchase, I believe he would have given me a purchase receipt of some sort. Akin to Wyatt True's review, Bob treated me terribly for having had two brief impersonal encounters with me as a customer. Despite being a small man, his volatile behavior and lack of professionalism put me in quite a fright. Needless to say, we cannot recommend this business to you.

So, in regard to my previous review, I figured I'd share the owner's response to both me and my…read morepartner. To me, this response avoids taking responsibility or showing much professionalism. It also includes claims that simply aren't true--at no point did we tell anyone to go to our uncle's shop or say he'd do a better job. That never happened. We 100% do NOT have an uncle or bloodline family that has a shop. Weird how he chose to go with that fabricated claim. The guy was Carly's coworkers brother.. I did get a laugh out of the part where he says he's reporting my reviews. Personally, I'd rather they stay up. Let people read both sides and decide for themselves what happened. If you're confident in your version of events, there shouldn't be any issue with people seeing both perspectives. Below is the series of events paraphrase.. My girlfriend and I were in the store while another couple was discussing selling a large reggae record collection. The owner was already talking about other stores and possible buyers for a collection of that size. Since the conversation was already centered around outside options, my girlfriend casually mentioned another local shop that might also be interested. The response was immediate and hostile. Instead of simply saying he preferred competitors not be mentioned in his store, he repeatedly raised his voice, saying it was "unethical" and asking, "How dare you come into my store and try to steal people?" His voice got louder each time. The interaction became so uncomfortable that another customer followed us outside afterward to make sure we were okay. Even the couple involved commented on how strange and over-the-top the reaction was. What makes this especially confusing is that the conversation was already about alternative stores and potential buyers. We're customers, not business owners. Most people wouldn't expect that mentioning another local shop in that context would lead to being publicly yelled at. Needless to say, I won't be returning, and I can't recommend a business that treats customers this way. If you take this review with a grain of salt, that's completely fair--but understand that, in our experience, simply mentioning another local business during a conversation that was already about other shops was enough to earn a public scolding. The photo below includes the owner's response. It conveniently leaves out the fact that we had already been talking with the couple and that multiple outside options had already been discussed before Carly made her suggestion. He's entitled to his version of events, but it doesn't reflect what happened that day. Regardless of the disagreement, I don't believe it's appropriate for a business owner to speak to customers--especially by repeatedly yelling at a young woman--in the way he did.
