Santa Margarita River Trail is a beautiful spot for getting outdoors, especially if you enjoy…read morenature and river views. The trail is mostly easy to moderate and great for walking, hiking, or even horseback riding. It's also very dog-friendly, but keep your dog on a leash; simple. There are horses and other trail users beyond you and your dog. Be considerate, which reminds me, pack it in, pack it out. It does get pretty busy, especially on weekends, so expect to see lots of people, dogs, and riders sharing the trail. Parking is free, but it can fill up quickly. The lot fills with trailers. Overall, it's a great place to enjoy nature, just be prepared for crowds if you go during peak times. Also, bring plenty of water and snacks because it can get hot during the summer months. The signage does remind you to keep an eye out for rattlesnakes, poison oak, and uneven or rocky terrain. I've seen plenty of poison oak, so pay attention.

I read a few reviews here and figured it was going to be the smartest move since it can get insanely busy, especially on a holiday. Me and the pup started our hike at about 8am and unfortunately because I'm not usually a hiker, I definitely got lost even with a map. I didn't really know there was like 7 different paths you could go on and well I guess I did a little bit of this and a little bit of that and ended up leaving about 3 hours after. It was a pretty one for sure but be careful of dog poop. A lot of dogs on the trail and not a lot of people picking up that poop. Unfortunately, there are not any trash cans on the trail so if your dog has to go, try to do it before the hike instead of on it. I was carrying that bag what felt like forever. The greenery is gorgeous obviously and the water seemed nice, I just didn't feel like going through it to get wet. Fairly easy hike except for some sketchy rock ledges. Other than that, be cool, wear a hat, pick up your dog poop and watch out for the horses.

If you start for Killen road then the first portion is very shady with lots of oak trees. We enjoyed this portion immensely but once the valley opened up and the chaparral changed we turned around. This portion was very easy for our young kids. We will definitely be back to explore some more. There are many trails in this area.

Mainly because of the conditions of Bear Canyon Trail. The trail is easy to follow with the white trail markers along the forks to let you know which direction to go when there's a split in the trail. You'll gradually gain around 1,000 feet of elevation through the first 4 miles of the trail, and the last big climb up the mountain to get to Sitton Peak will be the real challenge of the hike. The climb up Sitton can be tough so bring hiking poles for back up. Round trip the hike is 10 miles with a little over 2,000 elevation gains. The parking area for the trail is San Juan Loop & Bear Canyon trail head. You can gps search Ortega Oaks Candy Shop for accurate directions since the parking lot is right across the street. When parking make sure you remember to display your adventure pass.

The parking lot is easy to get to. There's restrooms in the parking lot. The adventure pass is required. This is an easy hike except the last .4 of a mile closer to the peak. It's really steep. Be careful. Trekking poles are helpful coming down in that section of the hike. There were several other people in the trail today. There was a group of kids who I think were boys scouts. There are a lot of bugs and I recommend you bring insect repellent. Overall, it was an awesome hike. Happy hiking! The 74 highway is under construction. I recommend you check the 74 Ortega Highway Widening website for future closures. They occasionally have 55hr full highway closures on the weekends. It's anticipated to be completed by Spring 2025.

There are several great lookout points with Elsinore and inland mountains off to the east and OC to the west. I went on a particularly clear day and could see all the way out to the Pacific. If you are in a 4x4 there are side trails along the way that present a good challenge. There are some sketchy parts with good drop-offs to your side. Most SUVs or trucks could drive the trail with no problem. If wet you will def want 4wd. Other posts do a good job of describing how to get here so I wont bother. Unfortunately my camera died so I couldn't get any good shots, but the scenery was amazing. Its about a 2hr drive if you do the whole thing, I would recommend to anyone looking for some off the beaten path adventure and killer scenery.

No restrooms. So be sure to use the porta-potties at the convenience shack located a few mins before you reach the trailhead. Those toilets lack hand sanitizer. Also during the last third of this hike, there are steep slopes with lots of loose rocks. Easy to slip. Keep your wits about you. There were no other hikers when I went on a hot Sunday midday. So you might be on your own. Prep well for lonely, dry weather. Trails are twisty, rugged, steep downhill and uphill . Some trails are loose gravel and weak soil- careful, one can easily loose footing. Pathways are filled with brush and can mildy be abrasive. Steep hills and rock climbing over large boulders will be part of the hike. Once on the upper trails, its a roller coaster ride of fast trails.. There are 3 main trails - lower os the Cole trail - main trail is the wiashal trail and the surrounding trail is big rock scramble. The main trail would be the wiashal trail and cris crosses the entire range. Initial trail of Cole is around 2 miles... including the big rock scramble would be another 2 1.5 miles and the wiashal trail is around 4 miles or more. On a good walk jog run bike or horse ride - from 2.5 miles to 10 miles can be expected- depending on your skill level. This path is easy moderate and difficult. Parking can be accessible via street parking via Cole canyon entry or wiashal entry or by Clinton Keith road - only thing missing... signs - markers- maybe a bench or two ..a water fountain at the entrance or a map... all those would have given it a better score...

This trail is terrible…read more Horrible access for my mobility scooter to start. You had to walk so far from the car to get to the trail head. There were kids riding scooters and bikes which I thought was dangerous. We came across a rattle snake in the middle of the trail. It was evening so luckily my wife had a camel pack on full of juice and a head lamp to we caught the stupid snake before it could harm us. I will never return

Fun and easy (to get to) slab climbing out by Lake Perris. Keep in mind, many of the routes are…read moreNOT SPORT BOLTED. Take the appropriately names Crater Maker. 3 bolts for 100-ish feet, and the top half of the route has no pro. Now, the top 1/2 is easier than the bottom half, but it is run out. If you are a leader at that grade, the run out is very heady. A fall from near the top has serious decking potential. If you are comfortable at the grade, the top is easy, so just keep that in mind. Other routes are more generously bolted, and some do dip into true sport bolted routes. There are also some trad routes and several multipitch options. It us mainly low angle friction slab climbing, so don't expect a gym-like experience, or even climbing like in Holcomb or New Jack. The area has been rebolted, so if you run into the guy who rebolted the area, buy a guide sheet from him to pay for all the material that went into the effort.

I came out with a friend to get lead climbing, anchoring, rappelling, and top belay experience. I found I had a great time. Contrary to what other rock climbers may say, this place is traditional sport climbing with far spaced bolts and so the rock guide books label many of the climbs as "trad", but don't require trad climbing gear such as cams, nuts, and hexes. Most of the climbs are rated below 5.11, with the majority in the 5.8 and easier range. I lead Africa Flake and Puppy Dog (5.6 climbs) and nearly ran out of rope at over 150 feet up to reach the anchor which sits next to a bucket formed by a long dried out spring / small waterfall. We then rappelled in two pitches and I learned a lot about transition descents as well as waiting on the rock for my second climber to follow or rappel. The "Up-Rope": - Perris Lake is a fun place for boating - It's better still for rock climbing (in my opinion) - This place is only about 1 1/2 hours from San Diego (off I-215) - Great place for beginners to learn "friction" climbing on a slab - Lots of nearby port-a-potties makes it easy to do what comes natural - Picnic benches and a few shady verandas make for good rest stops The "Slack" - Be prepared for crowds - there were close to fifty people there - Snakes - yikes! There's a few that live in the bushes nearby - careful! - Watch for the poison oak - it was dormant for this visit, but close by. Overall, great rock climbing area to learn or teach. Watch the free-climbers put you to shame as they ascend and descend without ropes while you're still going up. Some people live on the edge and others are close to jumping off - I recommend playing it safe. :)
