When I visit small towns, I find the food servers are usually friendly people. This food server was less than friendly from the start to the finish of our experience. The food was lacking; my large salad had only lettuce, and there wasn't a vegetable in it. The pizza my wife ordered was one of the worst I've had in a while. The Bear Trap has been around for quite some time in which it's a bar, restaurant and an occasional venue in which bands go to the back of the building to the small stage in which concerts take place during the warmer months of the year in Wyoming. It wasn't until my most recent trip back did I actually go here for a meal. I had no reason to avoid it it just didn't happen until now. It's a very popular place for the nearby residents of Riverside and Encampment as well as tourists passing through. I went here with my brother and his girlfriend for lunch and I was pretty impressed with the lunch I had here! As I mentioned it can be a busy place and it indeed was. There was a picnic table outside and while the inside was fairly crowded we had the outside all to ourselves. I had an excellent sandwich, the restaurant's version of the French Dip and really liked it more than I thought I would! Everyone else seemed to like their meals but the pizza that my brother's girlfriend had was commented that it was a bit dry. We took some soup to go to take home for my dad and he really enjoyed it. I stopped at the Bear Trap Cafe & Bar a few weeks ago, while on a motorcycle trip. I wasn't expecting much, as we stopped there because it was lunch time and it happened to be the only place in town that was open. I ordered the shaved prime rib (aka a French dip) sandwich and fries, both of which turned out to be among the best I've ever had. Both tasted great, and the portions were generous. The guy I was riding with had the patty melt, and he said it too was one of the best he'd had. The staff were all very nice. First timer here and I wasn't disappointed. The server was very attentive and polite she was knowledgeable of the menu and made suggestions. I was with my son and my husband. We ordered the mushroom Swiss burger with a side of Mac, I ordered the Boss Hog with tater tots, my husband ordered the all meat thin crust pizza. With little wait our meals came out nice and hot. Came across this little restaurant when we wondered a little too far from our scenic drive through Medicine Bow, but we weren't disappointed! We were the only people in for lunch so service was quick and our waiter was excellent. They were out of quite a few things on the menu but we still found some great options. 3 out of 4 of us had a ribeye and them me being the odd one out - I got the chicken fried steak. The servings were huge and everything had that awesome home cooked flavor you only come across every now and again. I just spent 10 days in Riverside/Encampment visiting family, and that beautiful valley. Had several meals here, mostly breakfast. The sausage they use is very juicy with just a hint of spice, mmmmmmm!! The hash browns are fried in butter and deeelishious!! The sausage gravy they use for the biscuits and gravy is darn tasty. I had the Breakfast burrito the day I left and headed back to Denver via Rocky Mountain National Park and Trail Ridge Rd. The burrito was filling and yummy and I did not need to stop for food until dinner at 6 PM. The drinks at night are plentiful and strong. And all of the staff with whom I interacted were charming, polite and helpful. And they serve Rocky Mountain Oysters, they were ok, but I mostly ate them to be able to say I had. When I am in the valley again I will surely return to the Bear Trap!! read more

Driving back from the wedding ceremony on Battle Mountain, I stopped here to get a beer before the reception. I was through Riverside in November and the place was closed. A woman answered the door and said they were closed. I didn't anything of it, until I stopped there yesterday. Turns out the place changed hands and back with the original owner. I would stick to the burgers or a pizza that is cooked when ordered. It seems some food is made ahead and reheated not enough. It's rustic, clean, friendly; a restaurant on one side and a bar on the other, table games in between. The menu consists mostly of burgers and sandwiches, but also includes staples like chicken fried steak and other items. We all had burgers, they were large and tasty, a 1/3rd lb burger and fries was about $10. I imagine the beef was local, after all its Wyoming, lots of cattle around, it was very good. We had the special of the day (French dip and macaroni salad), mushroom Swiss burger with onion rings (the real ones!) and kids meal of 2 real tenders and tatie tots.
