First time flying into Durango…read more Leaving the airport and getting out to the main road you come upon Upper East Side Liquors. My husband is always on the search for a new or unique bourbon. So what else do you do when you get into a new city? I don't know what you do, but we hit up the liquor store. Upper East Side did not disappoint. My husband found his holy grail bourbon, which is not found where we live in SC. But wait, one bottle per customer. So guess what, we frequented Upper East Side a few times before we left Durango. We had to reorganize our luggage. But we left happy. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. We loved Durango. By the way there are many liquor stores in the area. We stopped at a few others but UESL had the best prices. See ya in the spring!!!

Instead, we were met by a man stationed outside like some sort of gargoyle - glowering, joyless, and apparently guarding the door - who informed us, "We're too busy in there to serve you." Wow. Turning away paying customers? Not smart. Allowing a gargoyle with a rude, hostile demeanor to represent your business? Even less wise. We'll be taking our LA fortune elsewhere, thanks. And by the way, I almost never bother to write negative Yelp reviews. I'm a positive person who prefers to lift others up. But this man's treatment of us was simply inexcusable.

The service tonight was slow and awful, while the bartender is nice, when they come out and announce the people sitting at the bar "if you ordered food, sorry for waiting but Edgar cooks when he feels like it". And also "I'm scared to go back and check on your order" or "if I complain too much he walks out" It's not a great thing to experience. And then complains to the customer about it. Also had another bartender come in after seeing him take several shots and then work behind the bar and admit he has several shots and likes working like that. Which is a safety hazard. This visit made me feel really uncomfortable and sounds like if you come in, you might get a night where people don't want to work.

Mike helped me navigate through a few bourbons and discussed a few new distilleries. Mike was excellent in his referrals having tried most everything we were interested in. I rarely see this amount of participation from store owners or interaction with customers. He must have said hi to five people by first name as we talked about different expressions. The selection of craft beers was also outstanding. They even do their own barrels and collaborations with local breweries for the store! The place has cleaned up a lot and though it appears a little rough around the edges on the outside, the interior is quite charming. What once was a run down looking liquor store now has that small town, warm and inviting atmosphere that brought me back to Durango after leaving for time. The Owners Jay and Gin are some of the warmest and nicest people. It is a true family owned and operated business that has a really nice and friendly staff that is employed there now. I stopped shopping there years ago because of a rude owner. Place is clean and friendly now. I live nearby so it is nice to be within walking distance! If you haven't been in there lately, stop in. They have a great selection of wines that are priced well. I ordered a fancy bottle of Dom Perignon from them last year for Christmas. Their selection is not huge but the owners certainly do accommodate if you have a special request. They really seem to cater to "Local" companies also and have a lot of Colorado products. It's a great small family owned and operated business and they certainly earned my business again!
