I did not know much about the Cottage when I booked my tripped, but we went to dinner there soon after we checked into out lodgings and were so very pleasantly surprised with the local musicians who played a mix of traditional Irish folk tunes and modern folk-rock songs. There were patrons who were bussed/vanned/driven in groups specifically for the music, but there was also a mix of locals who were out for an evening meal. Everything meshed effortlessly and blitheful experience. You can't say that for most tourist destinations. The food and service was wonderful, also. We went to Kate Kearneys Cottage numerous times during our stay in the Gap and each time was as good as the last time, whether it was enjoying a dinner with great music or just hanging out in the pub with locals late at night. We popped in after dinner and bellied up to the bar only to be passed over multiple times by the bartenders. They clearly saw us, even made eye contact at times, but just kept moving, taking orders of folks who walked up to the bar well after we had sat down. It was the strangest experience of bar service we had experienced in Killarney. Once the bartender actually acknowledged us, she was friendly. We got our drinks and moved to the front room where they had live music. We finished our drinks, enjoyed the music and called it a night after one pint. The space has all the character of an old Irish pub and we had high hopes for Courtney's, but sadly it was the one negative experience on our trip. Overall, disappointed. Enjoyed the pint and the space is cool, but we wouldn't recommend as a "must do" on a trip to Killarney.
