From late summer until early fall, it's crabbing season for us South Jerseyans who enjoy the simple pleasures of early sunrises, breezy lagoons, and beers in good company. I've been coming to Beaver Dam Boat Rentals for years, and I couldn't tell you whether they're the best in the business or not, because they've never given me reason to go anywhere else.
Overview: Reserve a boat, and show up on time. Beaver Dam Boat Rentals is located on a large lagoon/creek that's absolutely crawling with Blue Claws. The boats don't have motors; the team tows you out, drops you off, and lets you do your thing. They'll come out and check on you periodically if you hit a dry spell and want to move, or you need to bunker up. When you're ready to come back in, just flag them down.
Price: This place is cheap. CHEAP! Their largest boat, big enough to comfortably sit six, is only $70 for the day. Although you can come in whenever you like, last call is usually 2 or 3 pm. They offer whatever supplies you need, or you're more than welcome to bring your own. I usually bring my own crab traps, cooler, supplies, etc, but I get my bait and bunker in the shop when I arrive. Bunker is $2 for three fish. Chicken backs are available as well. Also, you're expected to tip the mates at the end. It's earned; they're more than happy to help you load on and off the boat.
Scenery: The lagoon is gorgeous in the morning. See for yourself. It's very peaceful, with your only company being other customers. No annoying motorboats whipping by every few minutes.
Haul: In early June, the crabs tend to be smaller but plentiful. Even in a slow season such as this summer's, we brought in around 45 keepers. Last summer at the same point, we cleared 70. As the summer progresses, the crabs grow larger but become more scarce. In early October you'll still catch 25-30, but they'll be a great size.
The only negatives I have to say about Beaver Dam Boat Rentals is the fishing in the lagoon is literally non existent, and the boats aren't equipped with motors. If fishing or riding around are important to you, you should go somewhere else. If you want to enjoy a great time with your friends or family, catch a lot of crabs and do so at a bargain, there's no other place in South Jersey to visit. read more
