My partner and I had very positive experiences with Duane Beckett, so we stayed with Beckett after Duane's retirement and were assigned to work with an employee who (I think) has since left Beckett. Very quickly, we saw that the employee had little experience, as he kept having to consult with the person in the next cubicle on the details of our taxes. At every step of the way, he seemed woefully unprepared. We left wondering if everything had been done correctly. Subsequent to our visit, we learned that the employee 1) was not a CPA; 2) was in violation of sex offender registration laws. The first issue bothered me more than the second, as far as our taxes were concerned, but I found the second issue to be pretty problematic as well. How on earth Beckett Tax thought it was a good faith business practice to let someone totally inexperienced--and currently breaking the law--do people's taxes is beyond me. It is also disingenuous that they advertise themselves as certified CPAs but are not forthright about the fact that employees who are not CPAs prepare people's taxes. I don't believe this would've happened under Duane's watch. read more

Ten-year customer here. I am writing this review as thanks for a decade of fantastic service from Tonya at Beckett Tax. Years ago, I came to Beckett Tax with my IRS payment history in shambles. I believe I had seven years of missed filings, unpaid sales taxes, and other problems following me as far back as the Gore/Bush election. I knew I was in a hole and hoped Beckett Tax would help me out. Fingers crossed, I made an appointment hoping for the best. I walked away, knowing I had just made a lifelong friend of this company and my excellent accountant Tonya. I will admit I did shop around at first. What brought me to Beckett Tax was their strong reviews. In hindsight, I should note I was seen by another tax firm beforehand that quoted me seven times higher than Beckett did. I won't name them, but I will say this other company's marketing campaign specialized in hiring seasonal employees to dress like Lady Liberty while making uncomfortable eye contact with motorists stuck at traffic lights. So yeah, that's about it. If you are looking for a great tax preparer with fair pricing, awesome people, excellent communication skills, and the ability to ensure your taxes are done correctly, promptly, and on time I would recommend Beckett Tax and Tonya. read more

Unfortunately, there's no option for zero stars. They were a great company until Duane sold it to a family member who keeps raising prices year after year to help pay for a $1.5 million dollar building in Deforest they purchased. Their two last price increases far exceed inflation rates. I'm going to definitely spread the word about these ridiculous prices jumps wherever possible. read more

FILING TAXES be forewarned: Outrageous increase to file 2023 taxes with Beckett Tax this year. We received an email from Beckett Tax this past fall that rates for filing would be increasing an average of 20% for returning customers, and that they had moved to DeForest. In fact for us the increase more than doubled this year...and our tax situation had not changed dramatically. We had two energy credits included last year and three energy credits this year. It's not like we were itemizing to warrant an increase in our fees from $140 (Feb. 2023) to $291 (Feb. 2024) YIKES that's more than a 100% increase! Be forewarned and shop around. Our son filed with a simple form too and paid nearly $200. read more

Don't be disturbed by the fly-by-night appearance of their office, Beckett Tax is totally legit. When you walk in you might think you're in the wrong place - there's a large and mostly empty room with some kids tables and card tables with games and toys. On one wall there is a door with a taped-on Beckett Tax sign. Head in here to let them know you've arrived, then take a seat in the waiting area. I'm honestly a little surprised that the spaces aren't flipped; the office area is very cozy and doesn't offer much privacy. Spaced out cubes in the larger area would make sense but since it's a temporary, seasonal set-up so cubes might not make sense for moving around. After some basic questions over email with Beth, I was paired up with Katie for my appointment. Katie was super friendly, efficient, and answered any questions I had. I had made the appointment because my usually trusty tax software couldn't handle my stock info but Katie entered it in a few quick strokes. I probably should have asked what number in the multiple printouts was relevant for future reference, but I can always ask next year. $120 for peace of mind seemed like a decent trade-off. The staff seems very tight-knit and everyone had a smile on their face despite being in the crush of tax season. Staff camaraderie is always a good sign. I appreciated the advice from Katie and she found a couple things I'd missed taking advantage of last year. Sticking with a small, local firm kept my costs down and left me feeling treated like a person instead of a group of numbers. read more

I came here once and they an ok job on my taxes. I then found out later they had a handful of misses. I have now moved on to a different accountant. They are better than the usual chain of accountants but getting more personal service is a much better solution and finding your own independant accountant who can treat you like a person and not just a number. read more

Fives are hard to get, and it's usually because we all have room to improve. I just started using Beckett Tax this year, first for my own taxes, and then two weeks later I came back and had the final taxes filed for my mother who passed this last year, and to consult on the estate taxes. Tonya did my and my wife's personal taxes, she was awesome. We were a little complicated due to some inheritance from out of state, and she had me out of there in under 40 minutes, asked a lot of great questions, gave me some really helpful advice about a better way to donate items to places like Goodwill, and assessed our withholding to make sure we were balanced. She even went in and ran our taxes a second time without the inheritance to make sure. Duane, the owner, handled my mom's personal and estate taxes. Again, I didn't think it could get any better than Tonya, and then there's Duane. One of the most genuine, kind people I've met in a long time, you can just tell he embraces life and he loves people. He spent more time with me than he needed to, but he grabbed books to look things up because my mom's estate was based in Texas, he explained what he was doing and why, he double and triple checked everything, he spent time forecasting next steps on filing for the estate and talking me through tax issues related to inheritance, which in our case was great news. The Yelp and Google reviews got me in there, Duane and his team earned this review and my future business. We went in to file for 2 years and were so impressed I let her file an amended return from a previous 3rd year. Duane and his team are amazing. They get five stars here, but in reality it's more like 10 stars. I have a complicated tax preparation that takes awhile to figure out. I found out that my previous preparer, for many years, was doing it wrong when I received a letter from the wi dept of revenue and had 30 days to appeal the issue. I found Duane through word of mouth and approached him for help during the 30 day window to appeal. He knew exactly what went wrong on my previous returns, dealt with the appeal, and communicated with me every step of the way. What Duane said he was going to do, he did. He was clear in the process and where he was in that process with my multi-year mess up. He was always fast to respond to questions via email or phone call, even if the answer was I am not sure but I will get back to you once I find out the answer. Duane has helped resolve a lot of stress and anxiety for me when it comes to my tax prep. I am so glad to have found him and I definitely will be using Beckett tax going forward. read more

Duane Beckett and his staff have done my federal and state income tax returns for nearly 10 years. He was referred to me by a business colleague. My wife and I will typically go to his office and over the last few years, he is the one who has been preparing our taxes. Because it's done very quickly and efficiently (however I do spend a fair amount of time organizing information so each visit is about an hour) each visit last about an hour. He prepares and files the taxes electronically. Year after year, most of the forms are populated already and he makes any changes necessary. By the time we leave both federal and state income taxes are filed. Over the years we have never had any audit or revision for taxes. Typically if any refund is due, the federal refund arrives within a week and the state within two weeks. Duane and his staff are both efficient and friendly. They're very knowledgeable. The fees for filing state and federal taxes are more than reasonable. He is highly recommended. read more

A friend of mine referred me to Duane Beckett for a second opinion on my personal and business taxes after my previous accountant told me that I owed an unbelievable amount of income tax for my second year in business. I thought that maybe I just didn't plan things right, or that there was something else going on. I know how busy accountants can be throughout the year, and so I wasn't expecting to get in so quick. I called, mentioned my situation and the person who referred me, and had an appointment set up with Duane for the next day. Within 5 minutes of speaking with him, I had a hunch that I made the right decision. After going over everything, Duane was able to find one big mistake that my previous accountant made, as well as a couple of deductions that were missed as well. By the time our 90 minute meeting was over, I knew I had found the right fit. Duane is very easy to speak to, and with his 25 years of experience as a CPA, he is extremely knowledgeable and a pro at navigating the tax world. I could tell that he really just wants to help people. And within the past week, I found out that I know about a dozen people who get their taxes done at Beckett. I can't recommend them enough. (Remember though, accountants are very busy and sometimes aren't able to take on every person who calls them. I did not have a good experience. The owner runs around like a bat out of hell and does not listen to customer complaints. My taxes had to be amended because the tax preparer did not listen to me the first time. She was not a CPA or accountant. Another women in the office had to explain to her how to do the correction. This year, I was asked the rude receptionist for the women that corrected my taxes last year and when I arrived I had someone else. When I asked why I didn't get the women whom I requested, I was told that they felt another person would be a better choice. I have one accountant for 30 years and this office is a fly by night joke. They can't own up to making mistakes and the owner hides out when there is a complaint. People give it good reviews because it is cheap. The owner hires unprofessional people so that he doesn't have to pay cpa rates for accountants. It may be cheap but it may not be right. read more

Great staff, honest and reasonably priced. I had called H&R block for a quote, and it would've cost nearly twice as much as it did at Beckett. Additionally, the woman who did my taxes didn't charge me for two smaller forms I wasn't expecting because it put me $25 over the quote they gave me over the phone. My appointment took longer than expected due to the complexity of my business expenses, and I didn't feel rushed or like a nuisance. All my questions were fully answered, and I feel confident going forward that my complex self-employment taxes were finally done right (as opposed to by me in an online program)! They were also helpful over the phone and said to call anytime with additional questions. Very friendly and down-to-earth. read more

I will never go to Beckett Tax again. Our first year not doing our taxes ourselves, and we decided to support local business and go here. Mistake. We got the rookie tax consultant who took over two hours to input our information. Fast forward 6+ weeks later, we could not get our return direct deposit and had to wait on checks in the mail because our tax consultant put our routing number in incorrectly. We now received a letter from IRS stating they need more information from us, and it will be ANOTHER 6-8 weeks until we receive our refund. When we called Beckett to ask why we received the letter, they were hardly any help. Now we have to send in additional documentation to the IRS. If I wanted all this extra work, I could have done my taxes online myself and at least then I would've gotten refund via direct deposit. read more
