Once the stomping grounds of such intellectuals as Kerouac, Whistler and even Poe, for a time, the library is now mostly a tomb and a shrine to days gone by. This library is so spectacular though, it's part of the reason we moved here to begin with. The service is so-so by library standards (my mom was a librarian for 10 years, so I'm picky), and the computer search system is AWful, but you can just wander around in it like it's a giant old mansion and let the books find you. There are HUGE historical paintings on the main floor of old revolutionary stuff, plus a few artifacts from the bygone era. The library is also a memorial to fallen soldiers, and their hallowed names grace the walls and halls of the buiding and stairwells, casting a ghostly reverence on passers-by. Outside, it looks like some sort of gothic cathedral, complete with relief scuplture and some old cannons from our bloodied past. Inside, there are 5 floors of books, books and more books, plus the ghost of Jack Kerouac wandering around. Say hi if you see him. As libraries go, the audiovisual section is rather poor, but they have a huge children's section. Great place to take your kid on any rainy afternoon and let them delve into the depths of their own imagination. Here are some stats and info tidbits from their website: From its first collection of 3,500 volumes, the Pollard Memorial Library today houses a collection of approximately 236,000 volumes, plus videos, CDs, DVDs, microfilm collections and museum passes. Membership in the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium gives Lowell residents direct access to the holdings of 35 libraries in the region. Circulation of materials amounts to almost 250,000 annually, with approximately one-third of this activity occurring in the children's collection. Although the library as an institution was established in 1844, this building dates back to 1893, and it's still in great shape. The attention to detail regarding the interior (and exterior) ornamentation is breathtaking. Plus, they have on display the largest piece of porcelain to ever come out of Japan, in the form of a huge vase on the main stairwell. Park downtown or in a garage and walk, though, since the parking situation is pretty non-existent. There's a bus stop right in front, but don't be put-off. The main entrance is around the side for nwo, since the front doors are closed off for some reason. Also, they have weird hours, closing at 9 M-Th, but then at 5pm on Fri and Sat. I noted that a previous person referred to Tewksbury as a Blue Collar town. I am puzzled how a town with homes selling for One Million Plus Dollars can be called Blue Collar?? They are small but are quick to transfer materials between libraries. They help the community is many ways including a free pantry in their lobby. The Wilmington Library is such a wonderful community space! It has a nice selection of books,…read moregames, and resources. The staff are always welcoming and helpful, and they host a wide variety of events for both kids and adults. One of the biggest highlights for us has to be the baby storytime that Nicole runs. It's honestly the best storytime for kids under 2 that I have been to(and trust me I have attended so many at the neighboring libraries). Nicole has such a warm, engaging presence and knows exactly how to capture little ones' attention -- with songs, movement, puppets, and stories at just the right pace for toddlers and babies. It's such a special program that not only the kids enjoy, but parents and caregivers really look forward to as well. It feels like the perfect mix of fun, early learning, and community connection.

It is fully a volunteer-run, non-profit community library so the hours are not as consistent as the…read morecity libraries but I enjoy the space for myself to read and for my kids to look around in the children section. I've been going to Hudson library once a week for five years. The employees are very courteous,…read morehelpful, and professional. I love when they do themes; My favorite was the Alice in Wonderland (book displays and amazing decorations throughout the library). My other favorite was from February, relating to Valentine's day: 'go on a blind date with a book' on the display upstairs. the books on display were beautifully wrapped with the only bar code showing, so you would check it out and then unwrap it for the 'date.' So creative. You can tell how passionate they are about reading, and how much they enjoy their work. They have a small area just for teens. Play area and big checker board downstairs in the children's library; I always encourage my students to visit. I've received tons of books through inter-library loan.

It also complements the setting along the Charles River quite well. It is across from the Charles River Coffee shop, allowing my perfect morning of getting breakfast, checking out a book and reading it overlooking the waterfall (inside the library if the weather is not quite right or down at the waterfall otherwise.) In the basement is the historical society museum. Again, this is a great stop if you are interested in local history, or if you just want a low-key place to spend the day. If you have children, keep an eye out for the story hour flag that is outside when stories are being read inside.

My most favorite library ever!…read more Firstly (and probably least importantly) it is in a great old building (but no disabled access, just so as you know). The library itself is pretty much one big room. Which is kind of my favorite part. Because you can bring your kids in, and while they look at kids books/play with toys you can look at books for YOURSELF! Yes, adult books! At most libraries trying to take your young kids to the adult section can be trying. There is no time to look at books. If your kids are really young they're probably running/crawling away or pulling books off shelves. If they're older they are probably bored and fighting. Or asking endless questions. No time to browse there! But at the Bacon Free library they can look at the kids books (or play with toys) while you look at the adult books. My real actual favorite part though, is the staff. They are super friendly and very accepting. And they know their stuff too. You can say "so I heard a bit on the radio the other day about this book that sounded really interesting. I'm not sure who it's by or what the title is, but it was about..." And chances are they'll know what you're talking about. I'm sure other libraries have nice staff too, but due to the small and intimate size of the Bacon Free Library you really get to see and interact with the staff (and like I said they're super helpful!) Now they don't have all the books in the world (although they do have thousands). But they can request any book for you through the Minuteman Catalog, and send you an email once it arrives and is ready for pick up. They have many programs. Our favorites are story hour (Wed & Fri at 10am). Many kids programs at other libraries require you to sign up in advance, and also limit the ages of the children. Which is VERY frustrating if you have kids of mixed ages. What are you meant to do with the other kid while one is in story hour? At the Bacon Free Library it's simple - everyone is welcome! No sign up necessary, just show up at 10am. Art for all (one Friday a month 3-5pm) is also great. The only downside are the hours - they're not open every day at the same hour (budget cuts - they're only there part time now). Check out the website for the hours before you go.
