You will be greeted by the most wonderful couple (and their adorable dog, Bella) that designed and built this dream home with hosting special guests like you and me in mind. My wife, Jill and I drove in, (I prefer to fly into their airport being a commercial pilot and flight instructor) and joined our friends, Mike and Martha. This was our wedding gift to Mike and Martha, just married, he's 80 and a pilot with Martha in copilot training. If your a pilot, you've got to fly in over the lake on your final approach to touch down at this scenic airport. Karen and Jack greet you, show you around their own designed post and beam joined palatial entrance way with vaulted ceilings, beautiful views, four amazing guest rooms, hot tub, outdoor patio with running stream/falls, fire pit and more. The serendipity is the Smith Mountain Airport runway and taxiways to their home for those loving flying and the thought of flying. Jack has built several aircraft that are hangered next door and will amaze your eyes. His own personal working aviation museum and hangar. He is building a new plane, a Van's Aircraft RV Ten (go soon if you want to see it coming together). Jack will take you on a scenic tour of the beautiful lake and natural beauties from the air in his Bedford Landing Air Tours Cessna 170B. You can even get your seaplane rating with your host, professional Flight Instructor Jack through Smith Mountain Lake's SML Aviation. One of Jack's guests successfully passed his FAA Seaplane Practical test this past Sunday, September 30, 2018. The morning breakfast of a wedged omelet/frittata, cinnamon sticky bun, amazing Virginia style pecan crusted bacon (yum, bet you can't eat just one) , fresh orange juice, non-stop coffee or tea from their attractive modern kitchen. You won't want to leave. And there are surprises everywhere throughout the three levels too numerous to mention. One really fun surprise is the mouse house which is setup with the miniatures that Karen's mom left her, a miniature room that you can only see by opening a small door near the floor. You have to lie down to see it and it's another dream place to stay in your mind on top of the dream home you will never forget. Karen arranged last minute to put a beautiful flower arrangement together with custom love note (my mushy words-red cheeks all around) for Jill. Also, the SMORES gift basket was a lot of fun after dinner down at their stream waterfalls and firepit patio. And then champagne in the hot tub with romantic lighting, well I can't say more. I can tell you that the 24/7 homemade cookies sitting under glass for guests was irresistible. Jack is a tall retired mechanical engineer, pilot, flight instructor and that's just a small few things. He is famous at our Experimental Aircraft Chapter 1114 in Cary/Apex near Raleigh, NC. Karen matches Jack's height, graceful, attractive Southern hospitality woman and Professor Emeritus retired from North Carolina State University and Virginia Tech in Family and Human Development. This was the first time we were in the Smith Mountain Lake area. We came for a family event. But from the moment we arrived we knew we made the right choice to settle into the Bedford Landings B&B for a few days. The innkeepers (who live onsite) are Karen and Jack. Extremely nice people who are proud of the beautiful home they custom built and are happy to share their knowledge of the area. Jack greeted us upon arrival and continued to be kind and helpful the three days we were there. The common rooms are beautiful and very peaceful. There are several outdoor seating areas that are lovely. I took advantage of sitting by the small fountain area a short distance from the house with my morning coffee. A lower porch is screened but we enjoyed the upper level for a night of stargazing. The room was very comfortable. It includes a seating area and an updated bathroom - the bed was super comfy. The breakfast was included and was wonderful. It was home-cooked, delicious and plentiful. Jack and Karen made sure that we knew where we were going for the day and also recommended a local restaurant that we enjoyed. (Be sure to try the Bedford Landings burger.) Our hosts, Jack and Karen, showered us with genuine warmth and hospitality from the moment we arrived. My husband and I decided to book a spur of the moment trip, we called Bedford Landings and Karen was such a pleasure to work with. They accommodated our late booking and even later check in, communicated with us very well. Our family (husband, myself and three kids ages 6,5,1) truly enjoyed the peaceful setting, stunning and comfortable home, fantastic hot tub, theatre and Childrens play area. The house features many decks, a swing, stunning great room with fireplace and many other places to enjoy or get away. Breakfast was perfect - filling, lots of variety, delicious and left us looking forward to the next days menu! The rooms were a pleasant surprise - spacious with large en suite baths, tastefully and comfortably decorated. Attention to detail the rough the house is impeccable - usb charge ports, water bottles for use, wine, handmade soap in the bath. Karen and Jack were wonderful hosts, not over bearing and not standoffish. We enjoyed many chats. Can't wait to go back! read more

Karen and Jack are wonderful hosts! They were patient and flexible, despite the fact that we did not check-in until nearly 10pm (check in time is 3pm). They gave us a complete listing of area attractions and restaurants and took the time to explain their favorites. Bedford Landings far exceeded our expectations as it is a large home with lots of amenities (e.g. game room, workout room, hot tub, theater room, reading nook, and several outdoor decks..perfect for star gazing). Although we did not partake, Jack is an avid pilot and loves taking guests on plane rides and will offer a tour of his hangar. Both are incredible chefs and offer the best breakfasts we have ever had in a B&B. The rooms were cozy, each has its own theme. Our room had a loft and extra sleeping areas for a family or group of 5-6 people. Next time we are in the area, we will absolutely stay at Bedford Landings. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place! I had been looking at trying to go here for a while after I heard about it as I am a pilot and have been wanting to take my wife and I on a little trip somewhere. This was the perfect little getaway. We had some time off and good weather that made it perfect for a last minute getaway. Jack and Karen were very accommodating. Jack was at the end of the runway to help us park the plane at the house when we arrived, and they also made sure we had transportation so that we could do a little exploring around the lake. The breakfast in the morning was absolutely delicious. The only thing I would have changed would have been if we could have stayed longer, but that was just our schedule that kept the trip short. We certainly hope that this is something that we have a chance to do again! read more

Karen and Jack were the PERFECT gracious hosts - making every aspect of our stay most enjoyable and restful. This place is really great. The home is a beautiful timber construction with a cathedral ceiling, stone fireplace, large timbers and windows - spectacular, really. They have 4 rooms which are clean, comfortable, and charming. We stayed in the "angler" room and it was really nice. Their breakfast is really fantastic- everything is delicious: thick pecan-crusted bacon, fluffy waffles, home made biscuits, - it has to be the best breakfast in the entire SML area. Karen and Jack were welcoming, friendly, and had great advice for us as we explored the area. We even made some friends with other guests during breakfast. We will return! read more

Our stay at Beford Landings far exceeded all expectations! The property and Smith Mountain Lake were as advertised in all of these reviews, but by far the greatest aspect of this venue are it's proprietors! Karen and Jack were far more than just innkeepers - they became instant friends! My wife and I were spending our anniversary weekend at Bedford Landings, and Karen and Jack went way above and beyond to insure our satisfaction. We are so thankful to have found this Bed & Breakfast at Smith Mountain Lake. Our family loved it, and there was something special for everyone, from the four year-old to the eighty year-old. Four star breakfasts started our day, and Karen and Jack were excellent hosts, giving us lots of tips for eating, shopping, and a cool scavenger hunt by boat. The rooms were very clean, comfortable, and well appointed, including bath robes. In the evening, we hung out in the loft area, watched movies, played games, and enjoyed the hot tub. Our weekend at Bedford Landings was super relaxing and such a treat! The bed and breakfast is almost brand new, beautiful, and unique...Jack and Karen designed and built it themselves. We flew in from DC--it was a scenic flight over the adjacent Smith Mountain Lake. This is a great stay for anyone, but a must for any pilots in the area. Jack and Karen were the perfect hosts and the perfect combination of super friendly and professional. We had an amazing stay at Bedford Landings! Karen and Jack welcomed us to their beautiful home where we stayed in their largest room. We went out to a great dinner at Bridgewater Plaza on the water, and came back to relax in the hot tub before heading to bed. The location was central to food, shopping, and coffee. In the morning, breakfast was an incredible (and big) meal homemade for us. You can't beat this experience at hotels or even AirBnbs. The hospitality and amenities are second to none. We chose Bedford Landings for a quick one night getaway to celebrate our anniversary. It was my first time at a B&B but my boyfriend has been to a few and he said this was the best by far. Karen and Jack are delightful and so interesting to talk to. Their home/B&B is incredibly beautiful. It's very clean and comfortable with so many neat additions like homemade soaps and bedtime stories written by Karen and other local authors. Breakfast was amazing! A wonderful get away spot by a great private airport. The accommodations were very nice along with a delightful gourmet breakfast. The hosts paid wonderful attention to detail and were helpful and warm ambassadors for this lovely part of Virginia. Airport personnel as well as the B&B owner, Jack, were exceptionally gracious in helping us with a dead plane battery in the morning.
