I get on at Birmingham New Street and Stetchford is just 1 or 2 stops away depending on the train and time. Costing me just £1.60 (With a railcard) The facilities here are the best I've found without having to join an expensive gym/health club. Offering a full 25m pool as well as two smaller pools and of course the "cascades" in a separate and enclosed area. This offers a great space for kids to have fun and for me it means they don't crowd the main pool allowing you to swim lanes in peace. It can get busy from 4-7 so I tend to get there for 8pm and swim an hour which I usually do 80 lengths. This costs me £4.30. The changing rooms and showers are decent and usually pretty clean, no need to sanitise yourself upon exiting. Friends of mine use the gym and the classes, such as RPM, which they praise. You can even top up your tan here, apparently.

I use the sports centre at the University of Birmingham a lot and while it does have positive…read moreaspects it is pretty dilapidated. The abundance of squash courts is a major plus, I don't know anywhere else in striking distance which can boast 7 courts, including three glass backed for easy viewing. Also there are numerous facilities for activities including: badminton, dance, gym, tennis, swimming and located across the university: 5-a-side, rugby, football, martial arts etc. However, it is soon to be demolished (the track has already closed) and as a consequence it hasn't been updated in a long while. The gym is tiny, the pool is only 25m (not Olympic size as stated below) and the tennis courts are almost unplayable due to a huge number of cracks and shabby nets. The changing rooms are clean enough but the showers areas are grim and the shower-heads are only about 5'10" off the ground (I'm pretty average height and I have to squat to get my hair wet). There is also a small cafe/bar which is nice enough but underwhelming and an overpriced, rarely open sports shop (£8 for a pair of football socks). It's functional and a pretty good facility for students and the wider community but the new-build can't come soon enough as far as I'm concerned.

I was a member for about 2 years, although I am no longer for reasons I'll explain below. Firstly, the centre is part of the University of Birmingham. You can join as a non student and if you are alumni you will get a slightly cheaper rate. I joined for the swimming pool and you can get a swim only membership for a reasonable amount (it was about £12 a month I think when I was a member). The pool is great - longer than any of the other public pools at 30m. If you time it right you could get it to yourself but this is rare (university holidays are the best time for using the pool!). Basically membership works if you can work around the student timetable - it is out of use quite a lot although I think they always have it open for morning and lunchtime swims. This is why I'm no longer a member as I can't work around the limited availability of the pool. Do note though that during the university holidays they do often allow pay as you go membership which is fantastic because it is also the quietest time for the centre. The changing rooms are clean and bright. They also have a sauna there. Hopefully this has changed but when I was a member the ladies loos were awful with a terrible smell all the time! I have also done the pilates course at the centre, taught by Esther and she was excellent!

Placed in a very privileged area of Birmingham, this very modern club has 29 tennis courts, 10 squash courts, indoors and outdoors swimming pools, a fitness centre, bar and restaurant and it's considered one of the largest and most popular racquet and leisure clubs in UK.

They give lessons of squash, tennis and swimming. The service in priory is just amazing. It's like one big family. It is VERY children-friendly-my son goes there for his swimming lessons on his own- and my whole family go on Sundays to swim in the pool. We also do squash. Once you are a member, you can book out squash courts, tennis courts, get points when you buy food, get deals on lessons, and children even get their own card to buy food with (only if you want them to), get themselves into the place by scanning their card (my daughter feels like a secret agent scanning her card into the machine). Overall, priory is one of the best leisure clubs around Birmingham. I would definitely recommend this place.

That said, once I had located the place I was pleased by what I found. The centre was modern, with plenty of parking space and top notch facilities. Inside the changing rooms were clean and modern and there were plenty of lockers for valuables. The practice room itself was large and well lit, ample room for everyone that had attended, the only fault was the fact that noisy step aerobics class was situated in the neighbouring room which proved to be an interruption to the more tranquil class that I was attending. All in the Gmac is a great facility and it's great that a such a modern facility has been built purely for the disciplines of Gymnastics and Martial Arts.

I have always been quite intrigued by racing and especially greyhound racing because I just love…read morethe dogs and I find them so elegant and absolutely stunning and even when they are racing they seem to enjoy it but then again all dogs love chasing after things. When my company decided we were going to put it forward as a night out I was up for the idea and off we went to Perry Barr Greyhound racing club and what a great night was had by all and here is why. - Location: The Perry Barr Greyhound racing track is situated inyes you got it Perry Barr which is extremely close to Birmingham city centre. The full address if anybody is interested is; Aldridge Road Perry Barr Birmingham B42 2ET - Packages: There are plenty of packages you can get for your night and the simplest is simply just paying your admission fee which is £5.50. They do specials though which do work out better especially if you are planning to spend the whole night there. One of the cheapest and best is a punters pack which for £6 - £7.50 (depending on the night) you can get admission, a couple of bets paid for you and also some drinks vouchers. There is a top dog deal if you want food which is £11 13.50 and includes admission, two bets and a food and restaurant voucher. The package we went for because there are a lot of us was the restaurant party package which cost us £98 per four people and we got admission, race cards and a three course meal plus half a bottle of wine each which always goes down well as you can imagine. You can book in parties of multiples of four or six as these are how the tables are set out. If you give the stadium a ring though and tell them what you want they are pretty good and the guy I spoke to was extremely helpful when I told him how many were going and for him to give me the cheapest package. - The Restaurant: The restaurant is pretty good and it is spread out over a couple of floors. We were right up at the top on the third floor and everything is set out sort of like you expect a school hall at lunch time to be set out. the tables all have their matching table cloths and they are all square tables set out in seats of four and six. The restaurant is quite large so I think you can get hundreds of people in the whole restaurant for one night. The decoration is just simple with white walls and then there are nice pictures over the walls and nothing else. Within the restaurant you can see the bar and also a small betting table and the kitchens. The whole place looks cramped in terms of how many people they cram in there but quite spacious and airy because of the way the place is decorated. Of course all along one wall are large windows giving you a perfect view of the greyhound track. - Fast Food: There is a smart looking fast food place on the bottom floor of the stadium but I didn't really get to inspect as we were up on the third floor. It basically just looked like it sold burgers and fries so the sort of thing you would get at a football stadium. - The Track: The actual track is like a huge stretched circle. You can actually go by the track if you are spending the night in that area but we were in the restaurant so we really didn't get to see it. I was impressed that they looked after the track after every single race so that it was safe for the dogs. - The Dogs: I thought they must be worth a mention as they were stunning. Chasing after this plastic rabbit you could tell that they were all having fun and they almost looked disappointed when it had stopped. The dogs racing here are obviously looked after very well as I even saw some getting treats after the race and the owners who had their dog win looked positively gleaming. - Betting: The way you are able to place bets is pretty much the same format as you get everywhere. You can place any priced bet which here is a minimum of £1 or £2 and you can place as many bets as you like. The bets which I made were as follows; Win Obviously here you place a bet on which dog you want to win the race. Place Bet on any dog to come first or second. Trio Bet on three dogs to come first, second and third. You can also reverse this so they do not have to finish in order. Forecast Pick two dogs to finish in a specific order. Other bets were things like betting on which dogs were going to win several races and you got quite a lot of money for those if you win although it would be pretty hard to win. Bets in Perry Barr can be made at the special betting booths around the ground or if you are eating in the restaurant people walk around so you can make your bet at the table and not have to get up every ten minutes. - Food: We ate in the restaurant and the food was lovely. You get to watch the dogs race…read moreat blistering speed doing 2 laps around a large circuit, it was quite literally impossible to get a snapshot of them when they were racing. You can either go outside and get a closer feeling when the dogs are doing their job or you can be upstairs in the restaurant watching them from their large windows. There is a cafeteria downstairs aswell and i have to say they do one of the best chips i have tasted.
