Potential to be a lovely area. New to Pittsburgh we have been exploring quite a bit and I was curious to see what was beyond this tunnel. I had passed it by a few times going down 51 to the red white and blue store. It was a short visit because of the rain that day. Grabbed a couple photos and notices so much trash. The trash cans looked like they had not been emptied for weeks and the trash was everywhere. Neglected

I wandered around here recently because I'll be moving closeby very soon... I loved it and can't wait to explore it further. The tunnel feels ancient and the stream rushes - it takes one minute to feel like you've left the city and you're in the forest. A rare and nostalgic feeling for me around here... I'll definitely be spending more time there.

Probably one of the most "Seldom Seen" natural areas in the City of Pittsburgh, this hiking trail and roughly 80 acre wooded area can be accessed via a small parking lot next to the salt storage facility on Rt. 51/Saw Mill Run. There is a really neat tunnel made out of alternating layers of brick (Built in 1902), that is kind of the highlight of this trail. It has a unique design and I have never seen anything like it before. The tunnel is half walking trail, and half stream. After walking through the tunnel, there are two railroad bridges that are very interesting, and if you climb up to their level, are covered in lots of cool graffiti. The trail itself follows the stream, Saw Mill Run, and has some cool natural rock formations. The trail doesn't go very far, until you reach the site of a washed out bridge. I suppose you can cross the stream when the water level is low to continue hiking, but the water was pretty high and rushing today, so we turned around, and explored a few other side trails. One took us to the stream bank where we found all kinds of relics, including a lot of old pottery shards (see photo), and another trail took us to an area with a fire pit. Overall, something cool to do, and probably something that not many people know about. Would be better if the bridge was restored so we could've accessed the other side of the stream to enable a longer hike.

I was fortunate and privileged to grow up with Frick as my backyard and walked all over the place before graduating to riding mountain bikes on the trails when the sport was in its infancy. Later, I ran high school cross-country races in Schenley and trained in Frick Park. Nowadays, we enjoy the flowers, wildlife, and groomed and maintained trails. I never appreciated how unique, rare, and amazing the parks are until I moved away and it's so great to see them treated as the unique assets they truly are.

I keep coming back and exploring different paths, only to realize there's always more to discover. It's one of those places where you can return again and again and still find something new, which makes it feel really special to me. The way the trails connect is one of my favorite things. Nine Mile Run flows into Deer Creek, which then connects into Tranquil Trail, creating an easy, continuous experience through the park. And thats just one corner of the park. While bathrooms are not abundant, you will occasionally find a porta potty, and there is often trash cans and benches toward the entrances and parking lots of the trail as well. Overall it's just a wonderful place to spend a sunny afternoon, and I really hope spaces like this continue to be preserved as an important part of Pittsburgh's identity and history.

Absolutely incredible…read more I don't go to botanical gardens much so I don't really have qualifications to compare or rate any particular place but Phipps blew me away. I like plants. I have some. I thought seeing a bunch of plants might be fun but I wasn't expecting it to be such a wonderful experience! The place is quite large considering most of it is inside. It is organized for a few different environments and a little something for everyone depending on what your floral preferences might be. It took us about an hour and a half to go through the whole thing. Got a lot of pictures. Saw a lot of interesting and cool plants as well as beautiful flowers. Highly recommend this as a stop on any and every Pittsburgh trip.

The vessel was a lovely shade of green and had some weight. Simple instructions for those of us who were not-crafty. While our candles were solidifying, we were able to go see the Spring show. Lovely evening. Definitely would do again.
