Great way to get a quick hike within confines of city. Reward is the great views. One note: Google directed me to Grand View Park. So if using Google maps make sure you look close at destination before beginning journey. If you do end up at Grand, need not to worry, Grand View Park also has trail access.

Without knowing too much about this area, we went specifically to go hiking on the Emerald View Trail, and it was a pleasant surprise. We parked at Olympia Park, near the dog play area, and walked down to the dead end of Hallock Street, where the trail begins. We hiked for approx. two and a half hours, and made our way from one end of the trail, all the way through the woods and ended up on Mt. Washington at the "Points of View" statue (This statue of George Washington & Chief Guyasuta has its own Yelp listing, just search for "Points of View."). We saw urban ruins of old foundations, some small streams, walked over top of the Fort Pitt Tunnel, all the way over and above the West End Circle. We saw great views of the river and bridges, and of the city. There were lots of trail markers, and a lot of other cross-trails that we could've taken. Also, there were a few breaks where you had to walk on the street for a short while, or cross over some streets, but it was pretty easy staying on the trail. Some of the areas were a little rough at times, and there were a lot of elevation changes, not too steep, but you do go up and down quite a bit. After we got to the end of the trail on Mt. Washington, we followed Grandview Ave. back to Hallock Street to our car (with a short stop at the Duquesne Incline and lookout), which really didn't take too much time at all. This trail is a hidden urban treasure, and I thought it was well worth giving it a try. Note: bring water, as there are no places to get a drink along the way, and we did encounter one port-a-john (didn't need to use it), but there were no other facilities along the trail.

Greenleaf - George & Guy Hike

This is such a hidden gem! I was looking for fun things to do for our family staycation and this park popped up in one of my searches. We did the Greenleaf - George & Guy Hike (2.5 mile loop). We parked at the trailhead and went to the right. The hike started out downhill and then got steep on the uphill with significant drop offs to the left. I would not take young children on this hike as there is no barrier to prevent falling down the mountain and the trail is rough. We absolutely loved the challenge of the terrain and the views (near Monterey Bay) were excellent. The "trail" also includes some street walking, and it was nice to see some of the Mt. Washington neighborhood that was not right on Grandview. I downloaded the trail map to my phone before we started out and was glad that we had it as the trail wasn't always well marked, especially when we got to the street sections. We will definitely do this hike again and maybe explore some of the other trails on our next visit.

I had called earlier in the day to inquire about cycling helmets. They told me the brand they carried which I initially wasn't interested in but decided to make the 1.5 hour trip to check them out. Upon arrival we were impressed with the selection of bikes but the helmet selection was limited to one brand and sizes were limited as well. As I was looking for a helmet my wife was looking at bikes. A sales person who was initially working with a customer had that customer walk away. At this point my wife said hello and the sales person halfway aknowleged her and walked away ignoring the fact that she may have a question. We decided to shrug this off and continue to look around. We took a stroll to their basement where they have more bikes and did some preliminary sizing for my wife as we are in the market to purchase a new one for her. Then wee made our way back upstairs and back to the helmets. I had decided that I liked one of the helmets but wanted to compare with others they had on display but couldn't find the color or size I needed. After having other employees ignored us I decided it was time to go and internet shop for a helmet. As we were leaving the employee that blew my wife off earlier finally took some interest in us. At this point we had been in the store for at least a half hour. I told him I was looking at their helmets and interested in the Specialized Search helmet they had on display but wanted to compare with other helmets they had. He proceeded to take us to the helmets to show us comparable models one of which was the LOMA. He then walked back to the counter to look and see if they had my size and color I wanted in stock. He then announced that they only had black. Then as I was asking him about the Propero helmet they had on display he turned to help another costomer that had walked in and never acknowledged my question. It's unfortunate that a shop that was recommended to me by a friend fell so short of how highly he and his wife spoke of them.

We typically park in the garage connected to the T station down by the jail. There is a Healthy Ride bike station right up the street and it is so convenient to rent the bikes! Once we get the bikes, we turn right in between the T station and the parking garage (there are signs that say Bikes with an arrow) to enter the trail. If you go left (away from the city) the trail will lead you down to the bridge that leads to the Southside Works. It is probably only a 2-3 mile stretch and is relatively flat. Once you get to the bridge to Southside you can go straight or right. If you keep going straight it leads you to a parking lot, so we always turn right across the bridge to Southside. This is a great view of the city and it's a really nice bridge. The pedestrian path is big enough for plenty of bike riders. At the end of the bridge we turn right past Hofbrauhaus. I'm not sure if this is still considered the Eliza Furnace Trail. You can ride all the way down the Southside trail until you reach Station Square. At that point we go back across the Smithfield Street bridge and it brings you back to where you started. It's a fun and easy way to get some exercise and see our beautiful city. It only takes about 45 min-1 hour to do this route. The jail trail path is clean and there are always people on it. It feels very safe even though you are just a fence between the parkway. It can be very loud too from all the traffic, so now we bring a bluetooth speaker to put in the basket and listen to music while we ride. I recommend this trail especially if you are from out of town and want to see some of the Pittsburgh neighborhoods!

Most people I know call this route the Jail Trail. It's relatively smooth and flat, so that's a huge win. There are some things to be aware of though. Cyclists can sometimes be a bit aggressive and not let you know that they're passing you. My only other complaint that as an urban trail, it can be quite loud at times due to the traffic. Perhaps that's the cost of it being a trail that's also used as a bike commuter route between Oakland and downtown. It's really nice for what it is, but don't expect a serene nature walk here.

The views are spectacular, rolling hills and so many colors of green and blue were breathtaking. Mile 9 was NOT our favorite mile. There is trail maintenance happening and that's a GOOD thing, but...the gravel is thick in many areas so riding the bike was sketchy at best. Thankfully it wasn't much more than that mile. I loved the train track right next to the trail and my prayers were answered when, lo and behold, a train appeared!
