There are lots of small moving companies which advertise in our area, so how does one find a reliable, cost effective company. And reliability is critical, especially in our South Florida paradise, where so many small businesses seem to blow you off, if they feel like doing so. So, when purchasing packing supplies at Boca Box on Dixie Highway in East Boca (see Yelp listing and reviews), I asked Bill, the owner, for a recommendation. Bill is a straight-up guy, and never recommends anything or anyone if he hasn't tried the product or service, and can vouch for it. Bill indicated that he had recommended ICON to several people, and no one had complained. Hmm, I still had my concerns. Well, I was under the gun, I had to have a move completed by month end (in 3 days), and the logistics of getting one apartment packed up and moved, and the receiving apartment cleared out to receive the furniture was daunting, even for a fierce guy like myself. I called ICON, and the owner SAM answered, and after explaining my time crunch, he arranged the move for Sunday 9 AM, just 2 days away. I kept asking him if he was certain his guys would show up (guys working Sunday morning in South Florida? Really?), and he reassured me that they would. I felt better after he explained the costs associated with the move, the services he would provide, and when I received both a text and email with a proposal delineated in less than 5 minutes after we spoke, I was sold. The move could not have gone smoother. The crew of 3 guys actually showed up 15 minutes early, after calling 30 minutes before arrival to confirm that they were on the way (how many times have you heard "on the way", and no one shows for another 2 hours?) They used shrink wrap to protect all furniture, padded blankets when needed, and carefully moved large framed artwork. [See all my pics] One guy was responsible for taking apart the queen sized bed frame, and wrapping the mattress and box spring in special protective bags. They clearly were in sync with each other, and did not miss a beat. They were using some real muscle and didn't seem to be phased by the 95 degree heat and humidly. At the receiving end, they efficiently placed the furniture in the designated rooms, set up the headboard and frame, mattress and boxspring, and removed any waste. SAM, ICON's owner, showed up toward the end, to do a personal walk-through and inspection to ensure that everything was acceptable to me. His final price was actually lower than his estimate, and I could not have been happier. If you ever need a small professional moving company, and if you are also in a time crunch, look no further than this locally owned company. However they did not show up or give me accurate carrier information for my move. I have contacted them multiple times before, during and after my scheduled move through phone and email. They do not respond/answer at all. This has caused inconvenience and cost related to finding movers last minute, unable to leave on time through flight, extend my rent of the apartment and be late for my new job. Despite me telling the manager the scope of the job, she only sent two men to do the work that required three. This ended up causing the move to take twice as long and instead of the move costing me $800 I was charged over $2000. Back then, the father/son duo of Derrick and Elliot handled the physical labor themselves as they helped us move 6 years ago. This time around, they had friendly employees handling our move. These guys were pretty fun to be around as they had great personalities as well as some funny jokes here and there. If they didn't like their jobs, we couldn't tell. It started off with a simple call to their office on a Monday. Beverly, one of the owners, took my call and asked me a few simple questions to get a general idea of how much stuff was being moved. She actually remembered us from 6 years ago and was glad that we decided to come back to use their services. Beverly recommended using 3 guys and a 26ft truck to handle our move. We booked it for Friday at 11am. They had a small move scheduled right before us. On that Friday, they came to us on time just minutes after 11am. Two of the guys were expert movers (you can tell) and the 3rd guy was on his first day on the job. He was closely supervised. First thing they did when they came in was survey all of the furniture to be moved which took only a couple of minutes. Then, they started the clock and went to work right away. 1st guy started disassembling the beds while the 2nd guy started moving the pieces. The 3rd guy stayed in the truck to load everything so that it all fit in. These guys were noticeably strong and fairly quick, but also handled our stuff with care. Most of our furniture was loaded within the first hour. The whole move took about 5.5 hours as we asked them to do a 2nd trip to gather most of the smaller things too. They worked really hard and we had a lot of stuff. Overall, we were so pleased with their performance that we bought them lunch and tipped them as well.
