I arrived the night before the start of the diversity summit. The campus was well marked on the streets, though I did get lost trying to find my lodging accommodations. Slowing down as I drove my car, I eventually spotted a building matching the description I had. The workers were friendly and clearly directed me to where parking was for those of us attending the summit. I had signed up for the conference of my own initiative following attending a conference for the corresponding professions in March 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona. Finding parking that first night was my first sigh of relief I had made it. Then, walking my small suitcase towards the lodging building, I noticed a tunnel with lights running parallel to the tunnel entrances/exits up the sides and across the top of the tunnel. Pausing to take a look, someone on a bicycle rode through the tunnel and the lights blinked as they passed each strand. So cool. My lodging was comfortable, I was happy I had chosen to pay for everything myself in addition to choosing the summit myself. It helped build my confidence that I could call the shots in my own career. Summit sessions were held across the following two days in multiple on-campus buildings. Talent brought in spanned academia, national laboratory researchers, and people in industry. A few talk highlights included a presentation by a man from a company that had decided to pull his slides at the last minute for proprietary (intellectual property) reasons - he had to improv his entire talk. Another man, from my university (University of California, Berkeley) and a different department (Materials Science and Engineering) commented on how he hoped some day a Nobel Prize (corresponding disciplines: Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry) would be awarded to someone who cared enough about diversity to attend this diversity summit in advance of being awarded the prize. I enjoyed the on-campus meals (catered) we shared together as well. The weather was beautiful and we could watch an on-campus lagoon for wildlife. A birdwatching guide and binoculars had been provided in my room. All around, I had a lovely time.

A school and experience that takes advantage of rich students from around the world who want to…read morelearn American English; however they have undereducated teachers who have no idea on how to teach the English language, they overcharge for housing and only pay the host families less that 2% of the cost they charge the Language Learners. It's also important to note that they now have students staying in a renovated apartment complex out in Goleta called the Tropicana, where no one speaks English and the students as young as 15 years old are unsupervised, having promiscuous sex, underage drinking, and doing drugs in the rooms. My 16 year old female student had a questionable interaction with sex at the Tropicana and had to have an abortion when she returned to her country. EF started out as a good idea, but in recent years, no one is learning and it's turned into an experience where young people come to do illegal things that their parents or countries would not approve of. EF SB IS ALL ABOUT MONEY AND NOT FOR EDUCATION. So sad

She was to 'ASK' the teachers to offer writing in English and was mostly ignored! EF stands for Education First!!!! Also, the extra fees for outside activities are extremely costly. The company culture of ELS in general is a bit too stiff to be successful in creating an environment where students can thrive in learning a language. Students are treated a bit like they are in a high school or junior high, and teachers are expected to adhere to a very specific agenda, leaving very little room for creativity and individuality. The best language schools create an environment where both the students and the teachers feel free to interact on a more realistic, personal level. If you are interested in learning English in Santa Barbara, I would recommend EF over this school, even though I have never taught there. I have been in there and can tell that they have the right balance of formality and academic rigor dialed in much more appropriately for a social task such as language learning.

The teachers were motivated, caring and attentive. The kids learned something new every day. They "graduated" to upper campus in fall of 2023. Both girls had wonderful experiences. Some other parents asked about the turnover amongst the staff. Admin has such clear goals and expectations, and they do such a good job vetting their staff that turnover was hardly even noticed. The new staff slotted right in, continuing the existing program with no disruptions to the kids' schedules. And each new member was a wonderful addition to my girls' lives. Both of our girls entered TK well above grade level in their numeracy and literacy skills. And it's not like her parents are geniuses. We cannot recommend Learning Den highly enough.
