i'm a man of simple tastes really. Give me a decent portion of something tasty for a good price and I'm the happiest clam in the sea. Tie in some local flair or culture and I'm even happier. Beigel Bake does all of those things, and they do them well. Next to the foodie meccas that are Camden and Borough Market, Beigel Bake is the first place I send London newbies to get a quick bite.
Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere?
Well it certainly isn't fancy with only a few bar stools and an inevitable line, and I can't promise it'll be friendly if you're not, but Beigel Bake is an establishment in and of itself - and that's an asset. They know what they're doing, they know what they've got, and when you're here you're playing by their rules. Queue up, place your order, pay in cash, and be on your way. No frills, no nonsense, and entirely worth it. Star Granted.
Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost?
Well folks, you're in London, where the cheapest eat in town is a sketchy kebab that's likely to run you a fiver. But what's this? Be still my heart, because the classic Beigel Bake Hot Salt Beef Beigel is exactly £3.70, and that's a bargain considering that this easily suffices as a full meal. Amazing value here at Beigel Bake. Star Granted.
Stars 3 and 4: How was the food?
Goodness me. First and foremost, let me admit that I was skeptical when it came to getting a Bagel in London. Sure, the Polish invented the bagel, but let's not pretend that the city of New York hasn't mastered and shaped it into the breakfast staple that it is today. Only once or twice have I found a bagel outside of the city that matches what you find in Brooklyn or Manhattan, but Beigel Bake really does come close, and it's the flawless Salt Beef that puts this over the top. Endlessly flavorful with just the right amount of fat, the only thing that could possibly improve this sandwich would be spicy mustard, which is exactly what they offer. All in all, this is one of the best sandwiches in London. period. Dual Stars Granted.
Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could?
How can I say no here when the answer is so obviously 'yes'? I can't, and I won't. While there aren't any frills, Beigel Bake offers a phenomenal product with excellent value for a reasonable price, and the atmosphere is representative of the grit and grind worker's spot that exists behind all the flashy facade of modern London. well done indeed. Star Granted. read more
