(CASH ONLY) The ladies don't mess. Know your order and have your form of payment ready; this is so the line moves quickly and that you get your food immediately. It's a great system! It doesn't give too much time to look at the other pastries they have on display, but I'd pass on those and try their salt beef. The mustards got a kick to it for sure. Its tartness is a nice way to highlight the satisfying umami of the tender beef. The pickles are a nice touch as well. I was mostly surprised by the beigel. Normally, I'd want my beigels toasted. There really isn't much to add here, but here are a few tips and tidbits from my (many) visits. Chocolate muffins are delicious and sth like 40p??? Get one. Their 'black bread' is not made with charcoal or sth that will improve your overall bread-health, a guy who works there told me they put caramel in it? Sad. I always go for either the smoked salmon (you can't beat the price) or the famous salt beef. More expensive but also much more filling. As far as I know this place remains Kosher unlike their competitor next door. Even during the hectically crowded Brick Lane Market on the first Sunday my lady and I arrived in London, with a line out the door, we found ourselves in possession of a delicious three beigel sandwiches and two teas in a matter of ten minutes. And all for under five pounds. Even after monetary translations, this is the best bargain for a meal I have seen anywhere in London. Besides the insane difference in cost, only 25 pence for a plain beigel with noting on it (and under two pounds for those with toppings) versus whatever number of dollars one would be in the United States for its bagel cousin, there are other translations that might catch a Yank by surprise. First of all, the beigels are smaller and denser than in North America. They're the traditional style dense Polish kind and not their blown up soft doughy New York City brethren. But you can't let their small size fool you. Two beigels, one with cream cheese and one with egg filled me up for a day of walking around the East End. The egg beigel surprised me a bit since it was a chopped hard boiled egg rather than the scrambled as it would be in the United States. Just like my grandmother used to make it though. The only negative is that they cater to the take away crowd. There is nowhere to sit down and eat your beigel anywhere in sight of the store. I wish I knew about this place the last time I was in London, but so glad I had a chance to eat here this time. Well I ended up pigging out here and cancelling my dinner reservations I had later that night. I had heard about Beigel Bake a while back, but totally forgot about it on this trip. Luckily, I took UberX as I was runing late for an appointment, and my driver took us down Brick Lane. Towards the end of the street past the 50 or so curry joints, my driver pointed out Beigel Bake. All he said was that they were open 24/7 and that I had to eat there. The place reminded me a lot of Jim's Original (i always call them Maxwell's) back in Chicago, as in the food is really cheap, they only accept cash, are open 24/7, there's usually a line of people (which moves pretty quick), and have a competitor next door serving a similar product, which many people don't go to. I didn't experience any of the rudeness other reviewers had mentioned. Just know what you want to order and have cash ready by the time it's your turn to order. So my plan was to try the famous Salt Beef Beigel's and then head on over to the restaurant I had reservations at. My plans fell through as soon as I had my first glorious bite. The hot and tender beef, sliced to order, with the hot mustard and sliced pickles, all between delicious chewy beigels... it's all goes together so well. Be sure to get yours with mustard and pickle. Then I tried the jelly filled Doughnut, which was quite good, but was craving another Salt Beef Beigel. So I got right back in line and ordered another, as well as a Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese Beigel to go (which made for an excellent lunch the next day).
