I was only in Byblos for a few minutes as I picked up a delicious, traditional Lebanese style Chicken Chawarma wrap to go.The wrap was pretty darn good it has to be said, light with wonderfully spiced chicken, salad, potatoes, pickles and garlic sauce. As I waited I had a wee nosey at the food in the fridge and everything seemed delicious and fresh. The place itself looks really good, a big improvement on the former Deli Aziz, which seemed a bit busy and cluttered. Really looking forward to sitting in next time and getting a couple of things from the traditional looking menu.

The cafe is small, seating around 16 diners, and the decor is no frills, if not a little dated in a charming way, with the middle eastern atmosphere coming courtesy of walls bedecked with photos of Lebanese landmarks and Lebanese MTV providing the soundtrack. The venue is BYOB and better still, there is a Yelp 10% discount check-in offer, which was an exciting wee extra to discover. Byblos does a thriving takeaway trade which is great to see. We opted to start with a couple of dishes from the cold mezze starters list - hummus and falafel. The hummus was a generous portion, deliciously garlicky and garnished with olive oil and paprika. The freshly made falafel came with a side salad and pot of tahini paste for dipping. The falafel was delicately spiced and very tasty. We were also provided with a freshly made flat bread for dipping in the hummus. Yum! For mains, we both opted for the mixed grill, which combined both one of the lamb and chicken mains. This portion was huge, coming with loads of juicy barbecued meat, lightly marinated with spices. The rest of the plate contained chopped fried potatoes, rice, salad, pickles and tahini and garlic sauce dipping pots. Again complementary flat bread arrived for mopping up or building wraps. We had gone for a three course meal deal and dessert was traditional homemade baklavas of three different kinds. We were so stuffed that we asked for these to be wrapped up "to go." This was no problem. The owner (I didn't catch her name) was warm and welcoming throughout and we stayed to chat to her for a bit at the end. For mains, I ordered a chicken shwarma and a lamb shwarma - I spent some time in the Middle East in 2003 and I'm always on the hunt for a Scottish chicken shwarma that's just like the real thing. The total was around £16 for two starters and two mains. All the bread is freshly made and really tasty. The shwarmas were pretty good, not drop dead amazing but better than your average takeaway kebab. The hummus was good and the baba ganoush had fresh green pepper chopped through it which I've never had before but which gave it a fresh, sharp taste. While we were in, it was quite busy and the rest of the clientèle were all (I'm guessing) Kurdish so they were either all friends and family or this place must do something approaching authentic food. There were a few small tables you could sit at but it's definitely more of a takeaway place. The main thing I didn't like was that there was an overflowing rubbish bin just as you walked in the door. To be fair, it seemed to be overflowing with empty cans and bottles rather than food waste, but it's still not the best sight to see when you walk into somewhere serving food. And given that it was early on a Saturday night, I was surprised they had run out of some of the options on the menu. The food was better than your average kebab shop takeaway and did feel pretty authentic Middle Eastern.
