The Pelham Jewish Center has an amazing Learning Center, book group, cooking (and eating!) club, international movie discussions, social action and more. It is so different from the typical synagogue - this is what being Jewish always should be like!

In my experience, SPS has given us a community that extends from our apartment through the neighborhood and out to Israel. It is truly our home and our children adore their schools! Rabbi Ain pulls you into her sermons. Her eloquence, spiritual and boundless energy makes it easy every family to feel a part of the services and all the Jewish traditions. Cantor Dovs beautiful singing lifts your spirits in a weekly basis! Most importantly, the congregation is unpretentious, laid back, friendly and actually cares about you and your family.

The Sutton Place Synagogue is one of the nicest areas to sit in the summer in New York City…read more Nestled in the heart of Midtown, Sutton Place Synagogue boasts a beautiful outdoor waterfall/fountain and sitting area that is open to the whole community. The congregation was welcoming and nice and I enjoyed it when I was there for the summer. I found the garden incredibly relaxing . . . the sounds of the city completely disappear and leaves visitors with the calming sound of the waterfall.

I accompanied my Grandma to Am Echad for Yom Kippur this year. Grandma LOVES Am Echad. She's always…read moreraving (to anybody that will listen) about how nice all the people are, how beautiful the services are, and how much fun she has going to temple. I can see why she feels that way. From what I could tell, Temple Am Echad is like heaven for a Jewish senior citizen -- without the whole "being dead" thing. I found myself surrounded by such apty-named octogenarians as "Seymour," "Ethel," and "Harold." And unfortunately, each elder lady tried to out-perfume the others, filling my nostrils with the most powerful old-lady smell one could imagine. It's not easy to breathe out of your mouth for two hours straight. Truth be told, Grandma was right about the people. They really were all very nice, having nice things to say about Grandma and how she had been talking up my Yom Kippur visit for weeks. Good ole Grandma. As for the temple itself, it was a nice enough building, if not particularly beautiful. The Rabbi cracked a couple of jokes, one or two of which actually wasn't horrible. The Cantor was good, though I was expecting a bit more theatrics after Grandma's assessment that he could easily hold a lead role on Broadway. Not sure about that one... And the service was pretty standard, as far as Reform High Holiday observances go. That is, until we reached the Torah service and things completely fell apart. The Torah readers could not find the proper starting place, leaving the congregation waiting some 5 minutes as they searched the scroll. Then some of the readers were painfully slow and obviously unprepared. One old lady reader said she was too short to see the words well, though I happened to agree with the guy behind me who loudly whispered, "I don't think she studied very hard." Ha. Temple Am Echad seems to be making efforts to modernize and appeal to a younger generation, though it's definitely still ruled by the old guard. The temple President made her remarks and asked for donations to help keep alive the special services that Am Echad offers during the year, including a special Jazz Shabbat and their patented Peter, Paul, & Mary service. As I looked around, I got the feeling most of the people in attendance, although Jewish, would have a better chance of knowing Peter, Paul, and Mary from the New Testament than the folk band from the '60s. I don't mean to make Am Echad sound too terrible, though. My overall experience was not bad, though I would imagine there are better options for younger people in other places. But if this review comes across as too harsh, let me now say that I am sorry. And I suppose I can always return next year to repent on Yom Kippur.

A very inspirational small synagogue that is accepting of all levels of understanding of Judaism…read more One of the longest continuously running congregations on Long Island that is constantly adapting to change with recently implemented Zoom services and adult religious lessons and many adaptations to encourage a wide variety of perspectives. No Hebrew School or building fund means very modest dues making this perhaps the most affordable congregation one can find. Yet it is rich in spirit. Members come from many areas of Long Island and Queens to this modest Shul located just a short distance south of the Garden City Hotel. Progressive yet very spiritual and deeply religious Rabbi.

We attended a Bat Mitzvah at Makom NY at Bethpage Worship Center on Thursday October 12, 2017. The…read moresinging was phenomenal and uplifting. It was a visiting cantor from California and she absolutely made the ceremony! It was downhill other than that. I have never been to a religious house of worship where the officiate does not mention the need for thoughts and prayers to go out to community members in need. This particular rabbi did not mention once the devastated people of Texas or Puerto Rico (hurricanes) nor the California raging wildfires. Nor did she mention Jews in oppressive circumstances in Syria (war) and elsewhere in the Middle East. What else is a community for if not to support those in need? A basic tenet of Judaism as noted "Pirke Avot 2:5 Hillel said, do not separate yourself from the community, "was clearly missing from this service. Makom NY's website states the following are included in their mission: Meaningful worship, impactful relationships. Joyous holiday celebrations, learning for all ages and stages, sacred moments and life cycle, social action and outreach and connection to Israel. As for meaningful worship; The Lulav and Etrog were shown and offered but not explained. This was a Bat Mitzvah, it would behoove the officiate to remember that not everyone attending this service is a fully informed Jew. Inclusiveness is necessary to all of the congregants. As for impactful relationships; It was abundantly clear that the Bat Mitzvah girl's mother and family were completely left out of this event. Not one Aliyah for mom, grandmother, grandfather, aunt or any other member of the girl's family. What kind of religion does not honor thy mother? The Rabbi could not have failed to notice this conspicuous absence and yet chose to do nothing. As for social action and outreach; Again, no mention of any kind of those in need. It's a Shanda! After reading about Makom NY (https://www.makomny.org/) we were so interested in seeing what this "new" model of Judaism was about in person, however, after the ceremony, we were completely disappointed. The choices of the rabbi were disgraceful; as a woman, a mother and a Jew, she fell short of her moral responsibilities.
