It is a black taxi tour around Belfast taking you into the heart of the real Belfast and the history of the troubles. The guides are gentlemen who lived through the troubles and have very interesting experiences. There are guides from both sides, so you never know who you're gonna get, but it makes for a very interesting experience. I was incredibly impressed with this tour, and I cannot recommend it enough. It was the one thing I wanted to do in Belfast, and it was one of the best tours I've ever taken, anywhere. It was both fascinating and heartbreaking. My driver was Tommy, and he was fantastic. He was funny and super knowledgeable, and able to answer all of my questions. Two hours is definitely not enough time to delve into the intricacies of The Troubles, but it is a great start, and I wish the tour was slightly longer. This is a MUST in Belfast! Such a moving, informational, and eye-opening tour. Our tour guide picked us up at our hotel in his black taxi and gave us a brief overview of the "troubles" in Belfast. He explained both sides of the troubles, and was unbiased and informative. We drove through both neighborhoods that are separated by a wall, and he explained the history as well as current events. We learned the background on the murals and stopped at the peace wall. The quotes by Bill Clinton and the Dalai Lama were inspiring! Our tour guide was kind and patient with us and all of our questions, and our tour lasted about 2 hours total. The amount of information and quality of the tour exceeded my expectations! An additional perk was the tour guide offered to drop us anywhere in Belfast at the end of the tour. We were done around lunch time, so our guide dropped us at St. George's Market! read more

One of the very first things my mom and I did while on holiday and visiting Belfast was take the Black Taxi Tour. I was able to arrange the date/time via an email inquiry a few months before our trip. Norman picked us up from our Air BnB and took us around Belfast - including to the Peace Wall and the gated Catholic area. What an am amazing tour! It started off when I forgot to book a tour. I emailed Belfast Attractions at 8pm at night. Minutes later, we had a tour book at our optimal time. When we met Patrick the next day, we were floored with the volume of personal and historical information he provided. He didnt just drive us around, but rather stopped for photos, stopped at museums and showed us many pictures. The extra time he gave us really helped us delve into the Troubles and see everything from both sides. Our group had a personal touch and felt the emotions given by Patrick. Our driver for the day, Mark Murphy, was amazing from the moment he met us at our cruise ship in his pristine black Mercedes. He was professional, yet made us feel very comfortable, well taken care of and like we were touring with an old friend. As we drove out of Belfast towards the Antrim Coast, Mark told us the history of The Troubles through his own very personal experiences growing up...it was fascinating and so very sad finding out that so much of what happened was never fully shared with the American public. Mark asked if we had a specific itinerary that we wanted keep to for the day and we told him to show us everything he thought we needed to see in our limited 8 hours in port. We were so very impressed with the sights that we saw...Mark completely out did himself and exceed all of our expectations!! That being said, our day included...Bushmills Distillery, The Dark Hedges of King's Road (amazing photos and fun props included!!), Dunluce Castle, Giants Causeway, Ballycastle, Ballintoy Harbour, Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge (where we enjoyed a light lunch at the small gift shop), the Parliament Building, Hollywood Gold Club, Hamilton Dock, a personalized tour of the Catholic and Protestant communities of Belfast, the Peace Wall (which we signed), and a distant peek at the Titanic Studios (GoT was filming so we weren't able to get past security). Yes...we REALLY did all of that. We had THE MOST amazing day touring with Mark!!! He took a lot of photos for us (it was like having our own personal photographer for the day) and gave us the opportunity to spend the amount of time that we wanted to spend in each location. And...we always seemed to be well ahead of the tour buses that were traveling throughout the area, too. Such an amazing tour, we did the Mural Tour. We were picked up at the jail (not literally, lol). Our tour guide (I feel bad for forgetting his name:() was outstanding. He was very friendly, informative and not biased. There was so much political history to absorb, we learned so much. It made us appreciate the US a little bit more. The things people had to go through and their tough views. Our tour guide was very patient with us and answered all of our questions. The peace mural was amazing to see - we got to legally write our names on the wall ;) I'm glad not much has happened recently, although Belfast scared us a little bit. Don't leave Belfast without taking this tour. My high school son actually talked us into visiting Belfast. He was really interested in its history (and we have family on both sides of the troubles). I'm so glad he asked us to come here--and even gladder we did this tour. Our tour guide was awesome. He made the tour interesting for me and my husband, but also for our two kids. Unfortunately, I was mostly unimpressed with the tour itself. I understand the history here is a big part of the country, but I was hoping for a solid history lesson to understand what it was like and what it was all about, and that's not what we got. The tour only stopped by the murals commemorating some of those who died, a garden, and a part of the wall, and our driver didn't speak well in English or loud enough for us to understand. It was a cool experience that he lived through the troubles and was able to share some personal experience, but we had to probe to find that out. Some other tour guides sounded more knowledgeable and enthusiastic so maybe it was just the luck of the draw, but I was overall disappointed in the tour. I should mention the tour was included in a charter bus tour package through North Ireland so this is not a service that we solely came to Belfast to experience. read more

Tour was great! Picked up the tour from around City Hall from a guy handling out flyers. He called the driver who met us 10 minutes later and took us on a great tour. We saw all the key locations, personalized tour from our guide who treated us well and not like just another tourist. Picked up a flyer for this brand of black taxi tours and saw that they received a tripadvisor certificate of excellence and picked it over the others. The taxi drivers, from my understanding of ours, are all local and were involved in the troubles at some point or another, and many had been to jail for it--so you get the real stories and get a through explanation of the murals on both sides, however if you only want one they will accommodate to that. Much better than doing a bus tour of them. I thought we would have seen more of the city and not just murals, but it was great and we got more than we bargained for time wise--supposed to be 90 minutes but we got 2 hours because there was a history major in the car and the driver wanted to show us more than he usually does. read more

This was one tour you just have to do when you visit Belfast! I was recommended this by loads of people and it was worth every penny. Our hostel ordered the cab for us and we were lucky enough to get Tom. The guy grew up in Belfast and personally experienced first hand what happened up here. The tour was meant to go on for an hour and a half but ended up going on for almost 3 because Tom was a fountain of knowledge! It was so insightful and shockingly honest. So much history in Belfast but black taxi takes toy thru some of the darkest time. Our hotel made a call and 10 mins later they were there. 30 pounds for two of us for about an 1.5 hour tour. Our drivers name was JR. Really nice guy and he had a ton of knowledge. Took use stout falls road and has us get out to sign the peace wall. Met us behind the City Centre mall as planned. The driver showed up eating sausages so I knew it was going to be informal and I like that. Took us to Milltown and down the Falls Rd to see the murals and pay our respects to the Hunger Strikers of '81. Told him right off the lot no shakhill rd and no orange murals and he stayed clear. The Black Taxi Tour was an incredible first hand tour from the Catholic side of the troubles, though it was an even handed, eye-witness way to see not only what's there, but what used to be there. My driver, Joe, narrated, drove me to the sites of recent history - it's not just a tour of the murals- it's the neighborhood and what happened where. He also had an iPad with footage and photos so you can see what used to be there and what actually happened on those sites. Highly enlightening and you see parts of Belfast that many locals haven't seen. He also turned me on to the cultural festival with lectures and documentaries and exhibits and the cultural center. I definitely recommend doing this while in Belfast. I had a fantastic tour with Mark this morning, and already want to do it again. Mark did a great job of holding my attention, taking photos, and providing a great history lesson. He was willing to answer any questions honestly. A must do for Belfast, and definitely one of the highlights of my trip.
