Today was the day to cash in. After the prerequisite paperwork, it was time to undress and get over myself. Women will be familiar with this moment, whether at a bikini wax or a bra fitting, where you just have to "get over yourself" and accept the fact you're going to be in a various state of undress with a stranger while they poke, prod, or measure you. Amanda is a pro, so no self-consciousness there, even while she's measuring all your curvy parts in front of a full-sized mirror and making you watch. Once you're measured, then you are wrapped up with Dead Sea clay-soaked Ace bandages. This part was actually cool, since the sensation is a lot like being swaddled, and the bandages are all nice and warm and tight. But then, they start getting cold and wet, and you have to stand there, kind of moving around, for 45 minutes... This is the part where my latent tom-boy says, "What?" Don't worry, latent tom-boy says that during mani-pedis also. I like having my nails done, and being magically shrunk by dirt and bandages, but the waiting is the hardest part. Luckily, Amanda had some shows streaming on her laptop, so I watched the first episode of Pam Am (seriously, Christina Ricci? Interesting casting choice) and every 20 minutes, Amanda hosed my bandages down with some more Dead Sea soup, while I shook around like a dashboard ornament, or marched in place, or did invisible hula-hoop. Once it was all over, she unwrapped me, which felt really liberating, and then she measured me again. I lost several inches all over, but not necessarily in the exact ratios and areas I wanted, though that has more to do with me, than Amanda. I wanted to buy a package deal to have a few more done, since that's what recommended, but my house-poverty and the tom-boy would not allow it. I'll have to do it sometime when she's not looking ;)

I bought a groupon and had such problems getting someone to call me back to schedule an appointment (I left 4-5 voicemails in a week and a half) that I had to contact Groupon customer service. THEN I got a call back. 2. This place is kind of a pain to get to. 3. She stood in the room and watched me undress from the waist down. (Every other place I've waxed, the woman leaves you in the room for a minute to get undressed and lie down). 4. She also stayed in the room when it was over, while I got off the table and walked across the room to get dressed. It was really weird. 5. She used self-hardening wax - which is not a personal preference of mine. I prefer the kind that requires strips. 6. I'm pretty sure she dipped the same brush into the wax repeatedly after using it on me. 7. She took off WAY more than we talked about (which doesn't bother me personally, but I know it would bother others). 8. It was very uneven. VERY. 9. It began to grow back in only A WEEK AND HALF. All other waxes I've had have lasted at least 3-4 weeks (AT LEAST!). Yes, I had a groupon, which only cost me $17 - but that's $17 for essentially nothing but a long drive for someone to inflict pain upon me. THE PROS: 1. She (the owner) was very nice. 2. Her room is very spacious and nice. 3. She offered me really good prices to return ($25 for a bikini and $35 for a brazillian). While she was nice and cheap, I can't ever see myself going back there. There was no proper assessment of my skin to determine the appropriate wavelength or energy settings; I was simply told a "medium" setting would be used for a first session for safety. The treatment itself felt rushed, and during the session I noticed that some areas were being missed. Although I shared my past results, I was told by Fairy that IPL can't remove dark spots or freckles, which contradicts both my experience and widely available information about the treatment. After the session, I didn't experience any of the typical post-treatment reactions, such as redness, and I saw no results in the weeks that followed. Overall, this felt like a combination of outdated equipment and limited experience with delivering effective IPL results. I wouldn't recommend this spa for IPL.
