My family and I adopted a dog, Shawnee, a year ago. In the first few months we noticed that we were…read morehaving some issues with Shawnee becoming mouthy (insisting on biting, gently at first) including my 6, 10, and 12 year old girls. We contacted Betsy Ritter via email and were given some ideas to remedy. Approximately a month later, my wife sent another email stating we were still having problems but making some improvements. However things never did get better and my wife did not want to continue bothering Betsy for fear she would feel we are incompetent (see later on how right we were). Betsy never contacted us back either to follow up, or make the house visit like she promised when we adopted Shawnee. Finally about 10 months into owning Shawnee, he had jumped through the screen door 3 times, out the first story window 3-4 times and would rush out the door countless times when my daughters would go outside. This became a safety issue for Shawnee and anyone walking down the street or driving. The screen door was fixed with a metal screen and the windows could only be half open, but he was able to push by my children and escape. Our last encounters was during a Vet visit, he had to be muzzled and restrained for almost biting the vet. He pushed through the screen door that was not latched properly and was lunging at the post man, and he started viciously growling at a lady who was visiting us who was with our friend. Because of the propensity he showed in possibly biting/attacking someone, his multiple times escaping, we had no choice, and the hard decision to return him. Not once did Betsy say 'Before you do this, let me come over and see if maybe we can resolve this or find a way to keep everyone happy." Instead she directed us to return him to a foster home, 3 hours round trip from where we live. This week we found that Betsy Ritter (owner), Helene Scharf (board member), and Sherry Schaffer (foster home) made many Facebook comments about our family 'dumping the dog off', my children just was bored with the dog, and how we are not teaching family values. Hoping that what comes around goes around. They also poked fun when we warned them of his aggression he started showing including him rushing out the door numerous times. The adoption did not work out. Instead of dumping Shawnee off in the streets, or shoving him into a kill shelter, we returned him to find a family that can provide him what he needs. And because of these actions, we were ridiculed and mocked. Unacceptable and strongly advise not adopting from here.
