Small, clean, renovated aquarium in a building that was erected in 1904. Basically, you walk down one side of a long corridor with several fish tanks and descriptive signs - then return on the other side with the same sort of tanks and signs. Takes less than a half-hour. Clean and well-maintained.

Entrance to the Belle Isle Island/park is $14. This includes a pass for the whole year! Such a great deal! The aquarium is free. Plenty of parking in front of it. It's pretty small and makes a circle with all the displays. They have a good variety for being free but I still expected a little bigger space. There are no bathrooms in the buildings but there is a bathroom building in the middle of the parking lot. They also have a very small aquarium cart gift shop. It took maybe 20 min to go through it all and it's convenient that there is the conservatory next door. It's also free! And it was better than the aquarium.

This was beautiful and such a fun stop. The space is free (donation only) which is amazing because anyone is able to visit. The information is so interesting and the tanks were very varied! Highly recommend this visit.

The main reason I wanted to check out this aquarium is because it's the oldest in North America. Keep this in mind. Do not expect a large aquarium with elaborate displays and various marine life. It's a beautiful little aquarium that was probably amazing back in its day. Also, if you go in the summer expect it to be hot, there's no AC and minimal air circulation.

Free! This is a great aquarium. Small but lots to see. We went on a cold Sunday is it was crowded. No bathrooms in the facility. Right next door is the conservatory.

My husband and I decided to come here to celebrate Father's Day with the kids. They open at 10am. No food or drinks are allowed inside. It says no strollers allowed inside but we saw two people with strollers inside. My kids had a blast running around and looking at all of the fish. They do have a small shop outside as well if you want to buy a souvenir. It is free to come in and they do accept donations

I saw people complain about the smallness of this aquarium. But that's what makes it so wonderful and quaint. It's the oldest aquarium in the US and the charm of the exhibits is delightful and unique. The tanks are small, but clean. The fish have personalities that make you squeal with delight and we just had the best hour talking with the volunteers and being amongst the fish. Driving Belle Isle in the winter is also just peaceful and gorgeous. We had a great time.

This aquarium isnt huge BUT so beautiful! The architecture was stunning! The fish are awesome to look at and the information plaques helped us learn about them. It was quite busy yet still felt welcoming. The yard areas around the building are phenomenal and ITS FREE!

Review from 7/2023 Opened August 18, 1904!!! This is a great free resource! Decided to do some hiking and just ran into this Aquarium. We had no idea it was there; well, I guess we had no idea what was on Belle Isle! There were many kids in the aquarium that day, so it was fogging up many windows to look at the aquatic animals. I was able to talk with the volunteer who worked with the octopus, and it was great learning more about him. I was in awe of some of the fish and their origins. It is worth a stop!

What a wonderful day to visit one of the oldest aquariums in the country! It felt like a walk in the past, it was presented well and very informative! We really loved how each tank looked like a framed piece of art, like the original creator intended. They are also restoring/supporting endangered species which is helping the planet tremendously! Can't wait to come back when the greenhouse is open May 2024!

For being what it is - no it is not a huge space with 100 different types of displays - no there is no big tanks or viewing points BUT - the historical aspect of the aquarium is adorable - the volunteer employees were all so incredibly nice - the place was very clean - I would absolutely recommend to ANYONE to come here and experience this historic location. Bummed the connecting observatory was closed due to renovations but completely understand.

The Belle Isle Aquarium is a gem on Detroit's lovely Belle Isle. Its free unless you count paying to get onto the island. A variety of different types of fish and sea creatures. The volunteers are always very excited and informative. The only con is the size, if you go on a busy day your stuck with many people clamoring around the same tanks and feel rushed at times. All in all, would always come back whenever I'm on Belle Isle

You'll find a two headed turtle, a blind snake, a few albino reptiles including an albino alligator and so much more. The exhibits were neat and clean and we loved the fact that their animals have unique names. Just learning some of their names made the experience a little more fun. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and they took their time talking with us and interacting with anyone who had questions. Petting and holding the reptiles really made the experience fun for the kids. The stacked habitats were too high to see what was in all of them. The lower ones were good enough for me to peer into..... Hairy spiders. The aquarium side had a huge jelly fish tank that let you change the colors of the lighting with the press of a button so you could see them glowing in the different colors of the water. There were sting rays, small sharks, axolotls, unique looking fish and much more. It's jam packed at every turn with creatures big and small and for all ages to enjoy. Their gift shop is nice with lots to choose from. From stuffed animals large and small to little tokens in every price range. It's definitely a fun and educational place to visit. So if you're looking for a place that the entire family can enjoy, this is the place to go for both the young and young at heart.

The second time around we brought our 7 month old daughter & although she's little, she absolutely loved it! She was extra fascinated by the turtles near the entrance but her favorite was definitely the stingrays!! The workers were so sweet, one even picked up a turtle to hold it up closer to her. I can't wait to bring her back!

Our 5 year old loves playing in the ant tunnel and moving the food around. At this visit the docent asked the kids to play quietly because the animals have sensitive ears. I thought this was strange - they shouldn't put a playscape indoors if they don't want kids running around laughing and playing. They also were hosting 4 different events at the same time, which seemed like an oversight. There's a great enclosed outdoor playground connected to the nature center and an even better playscape adjacent to the parking lot. There's a huge wooden megaphone on the boardwalk behind the nature center. It looks cool but doesn't actually amplify the sound of nature like it says it's supposed to do. Events fill up fast and it's crowded on the weekends. The Nature Center entry is free, but you must have a recreation passport to be on the island.

The lot itself was convenient and not overpriced, which put it solidly in the top tier of my day's experiences. I sat there long enough to have an existential crisis, which briefly escalated into a nervous breakdown, before resolving itself in a ten-minute cry followed by a fifteen-minute makeup repair. By the time I opened the car door, I was technically functional. My beloved nonagenarian Gram is in failing health. My personal life is a façade at best and a derelict shambles at worst. Mental health? Eh, not great, but I've had worse. The drugs are still doing what they're paid to do. When this happens, I tend to end up at museums. This is 100% God's honest truth. My family did museums the way other families went to Tiger games and had ski trips. They have been our natural habitat for at least four generations. When life feels unstable, I go somewhere that has survived longer than me. And here I was, in a city I had spent years of my life in close proximity to, sitting in the convenient parking lot of a museum I had somehow never visited. Despite grabbing my fair share of brochures from the "Things to Do in Metro Detroit" rack at the Michigan Welcome Center, I had nearly forgotten this place existed. Thankfully, the Red Wings reminded me. Repeatedly. More on that later. The front desk staff were especially kind and helpful, and there was a reassuring number of people waiting to get in. I started my tour in chronological order with "Origins: Life Where the River Bends" until I realized I was talking to myself and essentially reenacting Pee Wee's tour of the Alamo."Inez is holding a clay pot, which she seems very proud of, and Pedro is working on an adobe. Can you say that with me? Ah-doh-bee." I decided it was time to go downstairs. If you like narrow hallways and secret turns, this is your place. Imagine a mini version of Greenfield Village except you don't have to go outside, smell any horse crap, or narrowly avoid death as a Model T nearly takes you out. You can linger in quaint shops and cozy parlors, the kind of spaces that slow you down without asking permission. I almost grabbed a table to start writing this entry in my journal, but I knew I had more ground to cover, so I kept moving. There were charming model trains with plenty of interactive buttons to press, a new exhibit called "Heroes vs. Villains: Detroit's Comic Book Story", and even a small theatre. This was just the basement, and my nerdery was officially piqued. Back on the main floor, I skipped a few exhibits because I had a feeling the Red Wings centennial exhibit deserved my full attention. Boy was I right. Here's the thing. In the world of Red Wings and hockey knowledge in general, I am like a second grader at best. I am eager to learn, but I still don't know shit about fuck. This exhibit was neither over my head nor boring in the slightest. I stayed for ages learning about everything from the red wooden seats at Olympia Stadium, to Darren McCarty's impressively chaotic ratio of goals to fights over the years, to how Justin Abdelkader proposed to his wife at center ice at The Joe. When I finally left, I believe I had been promoted to at least fourth grade at Stephen G. Yzerman Elementary School. But I never leave a museum without visiting the gift shop. After a two-hour cranial workout, I felt I deserved some retail therapy. There was a great selection of Detroit sports shirts, books, stickers, knick knacks, and of course Better Made chips. Armed with facts and snacks, I walked back into the same parking lot I had cried in earlier, noticeably steadier than when I arrived. Detroit's motto kept echoing in my head as I walked out: Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus. We hope for better things; it will rise from the ashes. It's a line that makes perfect sense for a city like this, and it turns out it works pretty well for a person who just cried in a parking lot and then wandered through history until she felt steadier again. I briefly considered getting it tattooed somewhere deeply regrettable before deciding to simply take the win and go home. It fixed me for the afternoon, which is all I ask of a museum.
