Over the years, the building fell into disrepair and was in poor condition until Lester Shaw purchased the facility in 2007. Doc Shaw is the Executive Director of A Pocket Full of Hope, a nonprofit providing access to music, theatre, dance videography and photography classes to young people ages 7-19 to help them graduate since 2000. He saw it as an opportunity to find a permanent location for its programs and restore a historic Civil Rights Era facility. The venue has been completely refurbished and it opened to the public in 2023. It is a beautiful venue for any event, especially one needing a stage and a full-sized kitchen. For smaller events, the lobby could be an option. There are beautiful pictures of artists who played there on the walls. The ballroom's capacity is at least 300 depending on the table/chair setup. If you want to learn more, there was an episode of HGTV's "Build it Forward" show featuring Doc Shaw and his wife Brenda, who were recipients of a grant from Lowe's to help restore the facility. Doc Shaw is also an amazing musician and teacher. Their episode is on season 2 and it's called "Hope is where the heart is".
