We are on a roller coaster of hope and despair with each chippers we try. We had been told the chippers in Remuera was very good. Unfortunately there are 2 across the road from each other! We chose this one, and ordered chips, battered snapper and a hot dog. After 8 yrs in NZ I still forget a hot dog is not wrapped in a fresh bun with onions but is in fact just a battered sausage on a stick - disappointing every time. The chips were good, crispy with a good serving size. I was not a fan of the battered snapper. The batter felt too dense and greasy. The sausage was actually not too bad, with a lighter covering of batter. I don't think we will return here and so the quest continues. Maybe we will try the one across the road next!

They have had countless write ups and reviews and have rightfully earned their spot in the top tier of Auckland's best fish and chips. What a lot of people don't know is that the people that own it have a great recipe and they share the recipe and help train up new immigrants to start up their their own shops(and this is great!). I haven't had Upland in years but not because of lack of want or effort. Rather it's because everytime I go its closed no matter day or time. It's seems that since they've gotten so much notoriety they only open when they want to which is completely random. I finally got to indulge after so many failed attempts and it was pretty good, but not as mind blowing as I remembered. Overall I definitely recommend it over the other place across the road but there's only a 50/50 shot they'll actually be open!

Had been planning to get to this place for ages with my girlfriend, and we finally got our act together and made our way down for a naughty unhealthy dinner and find a nice spot to enjoy it. I have to say I don't think I've had a better fish 'n' chips experience outside an actual restaurant than we did here. The fish was fresh, and the batter not stodgy and heavy, nice and light, and the healthy dose of chips made for a pant-stretchingly good meal. Definitely glad we decided to try it, and will be back again for sure.

Sure they're cheap and it's conveniently located 5mins walk from a beach but I found their fish to be dry (overcooked?) and the batter stodgy. On the plus side the chips where well salted and crunchy, and the owner is always so lovely - very chippa, with a smile on his dial. Whilst T.F.S will continue to be my fishmonger of choice, with sooo many fish and chips shops to try, I think i'll go elsewhere to indulge in this kiwi classic in the future.

However, every other time I've been there they've told me sharply that they're too busy to cook pan-fried. That's understandable but it has made me not want to go there as much unfortunately as I'm never sure if they'll be able to do it. As far as this sort of food goes, expect to pay a little bit more for what you're getting, but also expect to see a really good quality product. Burgers range from $7.90 for a hamburger to $10 for a scotch fillet burger - much more expensive than your average chippie but totally worth it. Chips are cheap - $3 for a small scoop and $4.50 for more. Also, I'm allergic to vinegar, so I can't have tartare sauce. Ollie's burger was really really good, the chicken tenderloins were juicy and the crumbed courgette crispy and delicious - the feta worked perfectly too. Not sure i'll come here that often, burgers these days have a lot to go by and The Flaming Onion needs to step up to the mark.
