Bema is famous in Devonport, and for good reason. For a country so closely linked with fish and…read morechips, I find it quite hard to find good ones. They're either too greasy, soggy, salty, small, too battery - I could go on. But here at Bema, they know what they're doing. I've been getting fish and chips here for about 10 years now and i've never had a bad experience. The fish is thick and delicious, the batter isn't too much and the chips are perfectly done. It's also really good value for money. All the extras like burgers, hot dogs and deep fried scallops are really good too. If the food isn't enough, the service is lovely. The young guy seems to know all the locals by name and even what they want to order. Chill and wait for your order while reading a magazine and then take the fish and chips down to road to one of Devonport's numerous beautiful beaches. Better still, take it up North Head and enjoy it on top of Auckland City.

The new owners just don't make the super fish and chips like the old owners did. Well our one and only experience at Bema was not good! The snapper was like eating cardboard, so dry we had to throw it out. It was fresh but way over cooked and dry, impossible to eat. I went back to the shop two days later to tell the owner and he was very defensive, never an apology, sorry or anything. It was almost like I was wrong...... If this had been my business I would have been SO embarrassed, I would be falling over backwards with embarrassment. The owner just didn't seem to care..... I said I would return one more time, but if he sold me dry snapper again that was like leather, I would never ever return. His attitude was I don't care! Just seems crazy in this day and age to not care for ones customers, maybe this is why people arnt cued up at the door. After that reception I may not even try the place again, after looking round the place it looks pretty old and grubby. MT Devonport

After sitting in the SkyBar in the Tower, it was time for dinner and I spotted this place (from…read moreYelp, not from the window). A short walk and a few minutes later, beer in hand. I found a comfy spot in the back, connected to their wifi and checked in for tomorrow's flight back to the USA. And then dinner. I ordered the fish and chips which was the biggest piece of fish ever. Crispy battered outside, light and flaky inside. Super hot from the fryer and with enough delicious fries to float a battalion. Wifi was speedy and the seating was comfortable and I'm just a little bit sad that my New Zealand adventure is coming to a close. [Review 531 of 2024 - 176 in New Zealand - 21563 overall]

While walking back to where my wife was shopping, I got lucky and walked by this place! This place got extra credit because it was much needed after my wasted walk. Quality/Quantity - Good selection of beers on tap. They offer samples if asked. Liberty Knife Party IPA - # 1 seller and an "always" on tap beer. 7.1% so beware. This was good, very smooth. Almost did not even taste like an IPA, not too hoppy. Eddyline West Coast IPA - 7.3%, wow this was even smoother. Borderline dangerous drinking this as it went down too easily. I cut myself off after this second beer (third one for the day). Beer flights are also available. Atmosphere - They cater to the locals here, perfect for me. :) Cool decor, sorry I should have taken more pictures. 7+ weeks out here and I still do NOT have an Australian or New Zealand accent, LOL. Indoor/outdoor seating. No people watching as it is a weekend, a Saturday today. They mainly cater to the local downtown businesses. Free wifi, but you need a password; just ask. Open 7 days a week from 11:30am to 10pm. Service - Good. Price - $28.50 NZ, approximately $8.55 US per beer. Expensive for a non tourist area... Owner Comment - Congrats on your success.
