    They still exist

I didn't know Ben Franklin stores still existed. Imagine my surprise when I saw one on Main Street USA in Oberlin. At first I thought that maybe it was just in name, since there was a book store adjacent to the store it's self, but once I was inside it was just like I remembered A store that had a little of everything, including fabricrafts in the back. The girl at the front was less than interested in taking the money I offered because 2 of her friends were there, but she did and thanked me for my purchase.

    Nice selection of kitchen needs!

I can always find what I need at this store...I love it! The used books area is just a bonus.

I give this good marks for a decent but not great selection of used books. The rest of the store is utilitarian but not inspiring.

Sorry excuse for quilting fabric, neat looking town and interesting history, just not a shop to buy good fabric.

Lots of random stuff for college students in town. Connected to the used bookstore.

Hired Strassen Construction (owner John Neu) to repair shower leak and the resultant damage. Here's…read morehow it was handled: Paid $1700 (half of initial quote of $3600) for him to begin. Employees sent out on the first day spilled can of PVC compound on new flooring, destroying it. Asked for a rag, but never mentioned the accident. Found out after they left. Owner said he would not send same employees again and that he would pay to replace floor. Reviewed the house and, after some discussion about what all we wanted (including a couple items not discussed previously), a new quote was drawn up with a total price of $5200. Paid additional $900 to meet the 50% up-front requirement to bring our amount paid to $2600. Owner came with his two daughters to continue work. He was very unprofessional. Did not work full days. Came late. Left early. Took long lunches. Called off several times. Made numerous trips to hardware store(s) for equipment and/or materials not on-hand that would take a minimum of a half hour, sometimes multiple in one day. Had to remove walk-in shower floor, surround, and glass door. Once reinstalled the door no longer would stay closed due to frame not being level. Also, drain leaked. Exhaust fan wiring needed to be moved and sealed from moisture exposure. Fan still not fully reinstalled and we are unable to turn it on. Several instances where we were told it would be safe to take showers only to find it still leaked. We asked that the bedroom ceiling on the floor below the shower be left until the end to ensure further leaks wouldn't damage it until all work complete. Request was ignored. He instead sent an employee to do the drywalling. She only tarped the bed in the room, leaving the rest uncovered. (Including the adjacent rooms that were not sealed off.) We bought additional plastic sheeting to at least close the room off for the second day. Ceiling hole was expanded to remove water damage and new drywall was installed haphazardly. Large gaps between panels were taped and mudded over. Overall work was shoddy. When we spoke to owner about our issues he claimed that we were "micromanaging" him. I asked that he verify that he was licensed, insured, and bonded. He claims he is, but did not provide any specifics and stated that by asking he felt threatened. He told us that he felt his only recourse was to "part ways". He believes the $2600 we paid up front would cover what he had already done, including the floor that was never replaced. He stated that he felt he could prove that he had earned the $2600, and that we could take him to court if we disagreed. Currently, our situation is: Shower plumbing still leaks Shower drain also leaks Shower floor not level The exhaust fan has no switch with which to operate it The wet-wall is still uncovered Shower door no longer stays closed and leaks as well Shower head is protruding at odd angle Pipes (PEX now) are installed poorly, with improper lengths and no support Floor still stained by PVC compound Downstairs ceiling looks bad - uneven panels, not painted or textured Ceiling fan no longer installed After a month of his work, we are actually worse off than when he started and out a large amount of money. Would not recommend.

They are attentive to your needs, and they establish a full meeting of the minds before starting the job, and that type of thoroughness and transparency is so very rare. They are polite and professional and from start to finish they performed the tasks just as agreed upon. As a single woman, I was concerned that my lack of home repair and carpentry knowledge would work against me, but John and the others from Strassen Construction explained everything to me in a way that I was able to understand and I was able to rest assured that I was in good hands, and it proved correct!

I wish I could give this contractor ZERO stars! I hired him November of this year. 3 months later,…read moremy house has more damage than before and unfinished work. He asked me to give him my Ford truck in exchange for completing the work and I agreed. There was no agreement for any money to be exchanged at all. I allowed him to drive my vehicle but made it clear he would not get the title until the work was completed. He created more work by doing things that I didn't ask him to do. He busted down my back concrete stairs, I have no steps to my back door. He put holes in my basement walls and ceiling. He slapped a brush of paint on my basement wall and bedroom wall and didn't finish painting. He sprayed paint on my sun porch pine wood panels didn't finish. He tore down a half wall to my kitchen and didn't finish repairing it. He stole materials from me such as my brand new toilet that he claimed was broken and he would take to Lowes for an exchange. I never saw the replacement toilet. He voluntarily added items that he said his other customers didn't want or he had in his garage and took them back. I believe he was doing the same to me. He stole two of my brand new cabinets I purchased from Rhyse Grumbling cabinetry. He failed to install another kitchen cabinet and left it on the floor. When I confronted him about having me Zelle him money for materials I had purchased two months ago, he claimed the store was closing and he didn't have time to get them. That is when I realized I was being scammed. I requested that he not do anymore work to my house, leave my keys in the lockbox, and put my car in the driveway and we would discuss how to proceed from there. The next day, he went into my house unauthorized, with some other people and took his tools and other materials that didn't belong to him. He also refused to return my vehicle, claiming it as collateral. The Elyria Police had to get involved so I could get my vehicle from his driveway while him and his family yelled at me and called me every bad word in the book. He continues to harass me by texting me requesting that I pay him for materials and labor when he took items from me, spent more hours going through my garage and taking things, and creating more damage to my property. I now have to spend more money fixing what he destroyed. Run in the opposite direction should you come into contact with him. My neighbors said he would only be there in the middle of the nights but rarely there. They noticed he left my back door and garage door open for two weeks. This contractor should not have the right to work on anyone's home. He steals, takes advantage of ones who he thinks is vulnerable, unreliable, and doesn't get the job done! It's all a scam. He left my house a mess and was using it as a storage and working space for himself instead of doing the job. In three months, he had me buying materials and sending him money and he only put up kitchen cabinets and three doors. All of the other materials I purchased just sat or he stole them. He also damaged my front porch railings. He didn't complete any of the work we agreed on but instead created more work that I didn't ask him to do. After all the damage and unfinished work, he wanted me to pay him money in which that wasn't the agreement. The worst contractor I have ever had! Wish I could upload pictures. Be careful!!!

We also gutted the kitchen and replaced the flooring across the first floor. We felt very good about using Andy and Dellisanti Construction for our project after seeing other reviews and talking to previous clients. The project started in December of 2023 and as of June 30, 2025, is still not completed. Unfortunately, Andy ran into some money issues and was using our project funds to cover other projects. He lied about having the cabinets for months until we finally called the manufacturer to get the real story. He came to us in December of 2024 asking for our help to finish the job. He requested we stop paying him any future funds and just pay suppliers for the granite and cabinets because he couldn't afford on his own. He would then do the labor for free to finish up the project. The expectation was that we would pay the same amount for our project, with the last funds going directly to suppliers. He begged us to let him finish the project and said this would be his last job and needed it to get done right before closing his business. He also lied multiple times about having our hardware, hood, sinks, faucets, etc., all of which we ended up buying on our own to keep the project moving. Andy has sent us dozen and dozens of texts promising to show up and do the work to finish up. We ended up paying another contractor to finish the backsplash because he is so unreliable. We have rearranged our schedule so many times because he says he will be here but never shows. At this point, I think he is out of the business and now working for a roofing company but in the event he ever tries to get back in or do some side work, I wanted this review out there. He comes across as a really genuine guy and we wanted to like and trust him to finish up, but it's clear he has no interest in doing the right thing. Please be very careful when dealing with this guy. He will say anything and then not deliver. It's really sad that contractors think it's okay to treat clients this way.
