Can one have a crush on a salon? Cause I do. A rock hard, throbbin' against my leg, all consuming crush on Ben Mollin Hair Education. This place? As good as it gets. I know, I know. You don't want to believe me. It's located in NWI, for god's sake! And we all know ::insert heavy sarcasm here:: that NWI is the antithesis of cool. Not so, my li'l yelpies. Ben Mollin, and his salon, is straight-up rock. Rock star, that is. Tattoos and piercings abound. The radio is much more likely to be kicking out The Pixies or Hendrix than anything close to pop music. And the staff? So cool I almost want to schedule appointments with them just for the sake of hanging out. The first time I wandered into BMHE, I was feeling a bit lost. I was in a hair rut. I had taken my blonde hair to black, then purple, then some silver, back to blonde, maybe a little more black, and howzabout a little magenta. And then, like any girl in a major hair rut, I started hacking it off. And that, my dear friends, is when Ange and Ben came into the picture. Ange looked at my hair (black, pink, blonde, and silver at the time) and went about reining in my hair from excessive to what she termed "pretty punk." Ange babied my delicate tresses (all that bleaching and recoloring takes a toll, yo) and brought me to a place of soft, healthy(er) hair while still maintaining the overall look I was going for. Seriously? The girl's got some major skills. And she might be one of the sweetest people on the face of the planet. By the time I hit Ben's chair, I knew that I was going to give him carte blanche. And I did. In return, he gave me the sickest haircut I have ever received. So amazing, in fact, that people continue to stop me and ask where they can get the hook up. And to answer your question--or allay your google fears--yes. Yes, this is the same Ben Mollin who appeared on the first season of Shear Genius. Yes, he is as down-to-earth and awesome as he appeared on the show. Yes, he is immensely talented. And yes, you should stop reading this and book your appointment now. Yes, now! And don't give me that nonsense that you don't have rock star hair. I call shenanigans. Ben and his amazing staff rock out everything from the most pristine bobs to the occasional kid's haircut. This review is for Sean Kelly. In full disclosure I went to see Ben for cut and color at the beginning of the month. Ben killed it on my color (going from blonde to a sultry brunette in just one visit...but I wasn't feeling my haircut. I waited it out to see if it would grow on me...it didn't. Three and a half weeks later I made an appointment to see Sean, who assisted Ben with my color. I showed him a cute little bob, and told him I needed something with more shape, more of an actual hair style. Sean did a fantastic job. I think this is possibly the cutest haircut I've ever had. It was exactly what I wanted. Sean is really professional, and did a great job making me feel comfortable. I will definitely go back to see him. read more

Awesome! Ben is hands down the best haircut I've ever received! He knows what he's doing and cares about doing it well. The space has a great feel to it, I loved the garage tool chests for hair supplies, Ben's awesome antique chair, and how simple and clean the rest of the place is. I am notorious for neglecting my hair in terms of regularly getting it cut. Because I am such a spaz about this, I usually find a different hair dresser every time because I am ashamed to see the same person twice with 6-8 months in between visits. I recently decided that I need to find a hair salon that I can call my own because I want to find someone that I can trust to get creative sometimes and because I have a wedding in November and need someone who style my hair all nice. Cut to my future mother-in-law recommending Ben Mollin. I made a same day appointment and got in to see Mike. The shop itself is sparse but clean and sort of a "guys guy" vibe with Craftsmen tool holders (cases? I'm not a mechanic...) to hold the stylist's supplies. The other patrons were all women so it's not as though this is a barber shop that also does ladies hair; they are are a full service salon. Mike brought me over and seemed to just know what to do. He asked if I ever curled my hair and I said that I would love to but it just falls right out after an hour's worth of work so I've given up. After the wash, he started the cut and we chatted with each other as well as the other two stylists very easily. When it was all done he not only blew dry and combed it but curled it as well (which held for hours... I was so sad to wash it out the next day). It looked beautiful and what was even better was that my normal morning routine is to wash and flip it over to dry and that looked fabulous as well. It's a little pricier than your average mall cut (mine was $60 plus tip) but it's definitely worth it. The guys are all super nice and in looking around at some of the other styles they were doing, they can go wild and crazy or keep it tame (which is the route I rolled for this first time in). I look forward to going back and making this my permanent place! PS... they take credit cards and you can tip on the card as well... which was great for me since I always forget to have cash on me... read more

Ben did a really good job cutting my hair, but it was expensive. They were all nice; a little quirky. I don't think I'll be going back.

It's no secret that women can be overly critical of themselves and each other, so regular visits to the salon can sometimes feel like a chore. Not the case at BMHE. Most want the same basic things after a trip to the beauty shop: a style everyone will envy, a comfortable atmosphere, and a fair price. With that said, how much would you pay to wake up every morning and love what you see in the mirror? To hear regular compliments and notice frequent double-takes from strangers? In my opinion, $2.00-3.00 per day seems like a bargain for this kind of attention. Multiple compliments per week is not a bad ego boost, eh? Ben is the only person to cut my hair since I moved to the Region in 2009, but anyone at the shop is capable of creating a similar style. I'm always asked the same question when I sit in his chair: "What are we doing this time?" and my response never changes: "Whatever you want." Why should I attempt to tell a professional how to create his style? He knows how to make me look fabulous, so I don't even try to instruct him. I've never been disappointed with the outcome. Not even once. Conversation from behind the chair is entertaining, to say the least. Ben is foxy and fly, clever and sincere. His wife, Angela, is equally talented with the scissors and color; she is charming, sweet, and totally professional. Matty, Mike, and Dennis have a lot to offer behind the chair as well. And to be greeted by Alan's caramel voice every time I arrive is a pleasure. If Ben ever leaves the business, I'll just shave my head instead finding a new stylist. Seriously. read more

I've been going to Ben Mollin Hair for a couple years now and I absolutely love it! Matthew is the best colorist in NWI by far, love him! I noticed some one mentioned it being expensive, it's nowhere near as expensive as a salon in Chicago! I believe you get what you pay for, which is nothing but quality, professional work. I tend to hop around from place to place whenever I decide to get my hair done, but I will definitely be coming back here from now on. This place has a very chill, yet professional, atmosphere. I loved the mannequin heads that adorned the beams on the ceiling! It's nice, too, because there is a cool little juice bar/restaurant connected to it from which you can order a nice smoothie (or a beer, if you want) to drink while you get your hair done. As for my hair - I absolutely love it! Tim was my stylist and he did an amazing job (I definitely recommend him). I had my hair colored and my bangs done and I am really happy with the results. I've already gotten a lot of compliments on the dye job from people. I will be recommending this place and stylist Tim to my friends and family. Give it a try! read more

I normally go to Chicago for my hair,I felt no Indiana stylist can handle my tight curls...but my stylist was booked and I had a party to go to...pressed for time! I booked my appointment,and wow I must say,ands soon as you walk in, everyone is so lovely..offering me organic juice,sat me down right away..just made me feel comfortable and like I was the only person there. Now to meet the stylist that will have to deal with my skeptical attitude, thinking "what does this boy know about my type of hair" He sat me down and just had such great energy ...Shaun, ohhhh shaun makes you feel like a close friend that he hasn't seen in years -we laughed the whole time and my haircut IS FREAKIN AWESOME! Ben and his team, especially my girl Angie, are fantastic. They're on the cutting edge(pun intended). Ben and Angie travel the world and bring all those experiences back to NW Indiana. If you want funky and cutting edge, they can do it. Want to tone it down for suburbia but be a little edgier than the average bear, they can do that too. High quality without the high price tag. I travel from the suburbs of Illinois and it's worth it. I look forward to my visit every month as does the rest of my family. I was so excited to get my hair cut at this salon. I didn't want much done, except some texturizing. I booked with Angie. Firstly, the salon is pretty cool, and Angie seemed friendly. I showed two photos of how I wanted my hair to look. When I left, my hair seemed much shorter than I wanted, due to all the layers around my face. I left satisfied though, thinking I needed a change anyway. It wasn't until a few days later that I noticed the uneven layers framing my face. One side had more layers than the other side, and they were completely different lengths. Separating the layers from the rest of the hair, it was like a different haircut on the left side than the right side. I'm totally bummed. The salon visit was a gift, and although it wasn't an outrageous price, it was more than I was used to paying. I had to fix the layers myself and the bangs as well, which of course, were also uneven. I even stated that I always wear my part in the middle, and once I got home, I noticed that it wasn't even parted in the middle. That might account for the uneven layers. Now instead of having a cool new haircut for the holidays, I'm left with a total mess. I'm completely dissatisfied with the cut. It's going to take at least six months to grow this out. My advice would be to listen to the client. Look at the photos they bring in. This is one of the worst cuts I've ever had. For the price, I expect some level of precision. read more

Whenever I am ready for something different, Mike is great at having vision of what style and color is best for my hair. He always listens and addresses my concerns. This place is amazing! I have super damaged, frizzy, crazy hair. This is the place to go if you have problem hair like me! To start, someone carefully washes my hair and last time they even used a shampoo that doesn't suds up. Next, Ben meticulously dries my hair pin straight before cutting it. Then he spends at least 40 minutes to make sure each cut is absolutely perfect. He is a master who takes great pride in his work. After everything looks perfect, he spends more time straightening my hair a step further with a flat iron. I look amazing every time I leave! read more
