Full disclosure, I am a Sephora gal and the last time I shopped at an Ulta was many years ago. But that did not temper my excitement when I learned that they were opening in the TraderJoe's Plaza. This Ulta is not too shabby and I plan to be a regular here for sure! Of course the product selection is not the same as Sephora, but there are still quite a bit of great products to explore. Products include BareMinerals, Clinique, Butter London, and more... Could easily spend an hour or more here. Also looking forward to giving their salon services a go. SO DISAPPOINTED! Mary, my stylist at the State College Salon, has dropped me as her client after a year and a half of service. I called the store manager and she related to me Mary's wishes. Mary will see me as a walk-in only. I have regularly tipped her close to 50% each visit. I will send her money for today's cancelled appointment. It's interesting that I've come in for my appointment and she was not there. I had not been told she was off sick. I didn't "fire" HER! Sad! She is very talented and I've been overjoyed with every visit. I will miss her! I suggest when stylist are hired, they should be aware of the downsides of their vocation. I will send her my tip+ I would have given her so she won't have a complete loss on my cancelled appointment. ULTA has lost a good client in me and the people I know. I was so looking forward to this Ulta opening, but I've been very disappointed. Check out is always very slow and they are out of stock of many basic products for a week at a time. I spend approximately $100 a month on beauty supplies and products, but it seems I'll just keep ordering them online. read more

I'd been looking for a new stylist, and decided to schedule an appointment at Ulta for a simple haircut. I booked the appointment about two weeks ago for an 11:00 a.m. slot this morning. I arrived a few minutes early and the stylist I was to see told me that it would be about 20 minutes until she finished with a client and could take me. I left and wandered through some other nearby stores for awhile and then returned to Ulta about 20 minutes later. The stylist was still working on a client, so I sat down in the waiting area where I waited...and waited...and waited. Finally, at 11:40, I asked the very nice receptionist if it would be easier if I just rescheduled. She checked with the stylist, and then returned to say that it would be better if I rescheduled since the stylist had another appointment scheduled at noon. I agreed, expecting to be scheduled later this afternoon or evening. After going over the schedule, the staff told me they could "fit me in" the next afternoon. Since I'd made an appointment well in advance and since they were unable to honor my appointment time, I felt some accommodation should have been made other than "fitting me in". So, I declined and was waved off with a breezy, "Sorry about that." The stylists might be great, but I'll never know since I will not go back. Good customer service is sorely lacking. read more

I had a really great experience here! I walked in one day to ask about highlights (foils) and a haircut and was able to be seen the next day. Madisyn did my hair--she's really talented and has a great personality. The other girls working the Benefit bar and retail side were also very nice. The price was pretty on point, too. I highly, highly recommend the Salon at Ulta. I know it can be somewhat incommodious looking for a new Salon and Stylist to give a try in the area. These girls at Ulta though, they are just amazing! They dedicate their time to just you and make the whole experience very enjoyable. All the ladies that were working the night of my first experience were so down to earth and just enjoyable individuals to be around. And of course, my hair looks AMAZING! I just got my nails done, the OPI gel nails and I am IN LOVE with them!!!!!!! I can't get over how good a job the girl did and then I had the microzone facial for the eyes, also a phenomenal job by Janice! I love Ulta and I can't wait to go and try getting my hair cut there! read more

I dread going on here because I think the employees are rude. Today was no exception. I hate needing their assistance but they were advertising their tarte concealer that has approximately 15+ different shades. Not wanting to waste $24 on another wasted make up product, I wanted to see the 'testers'. However there were maybe half the testers with the most commonly used ones missing. So I grabbed the two I thought would be my shade and opened the top box to double check the color since the box doesn't even show a color. No I did NOT open the product bottle. So since the employees were standing around as usual just chatting, I said "excuse me". And before I could finish my only question all she could do is immediately lecture me like a school girl how to never take the product out of the box. To which I quickly relied I didn't want to but they didn't have nearly half the testers out and I'm not going to waste my money on a product that isn't even my color! She had to continue about this completely ignoring my question until she said her piece and then reiterated it several times. Newsflash, I am a paying customer, the reason you have a job- customers! Maybe next time work on your costumer service, you know, what your there for! I am done going in this store. I am a platinum ulta member and I deserve better customer service. Not that it is a hassle to have me as a customer. How do you lose shareholder stock? One customer at a time. Possibly the worst customer service. Sign on the door says they open at 10 but they left my mother and I standing outside waiting. It wasn't until a customer left that we actually got in. We informed the girl at the front desk that the doors were still locked. She didn't apologize or even go unlock the doors? It's sad that people take so little pride in their jobs that they have to treat others poorly to feel better about themselves. You should not be in customer service if you can't be kind to people. Oh did I mention my mother is going through chemotherapy as they let us stand outside in the rain? I hope these classless individuals feel good about themselves making a sick woman wait outside while they ignored their job duties and chatted like mindless school girls. read more

Bait and Switch! Around 4:00 PM, I made an appointment for 5:00 so I could make it to dinner by 6:30. I got there early, but at 5:00, the manager told me "Here's the situation... I can cut your hair but I'm going to charge you $46 or you can wait 25 minutes and it will be about $30." I asked what the price difference was for (i.e., what do I get for my extra money). She said it was because she was the 'Salon Manager.' That doesn't seem to be a good reason to charge someone an extra $16. Either tell me that on the phone when I make the appointment or honor my appointment at the 'Non-Manager' price. I walked out unsatisfied and I will not be back. read more

I love to shop at Ulta and spend enough money there per year to achieve platinum member status with their loyalty program. However the perks of my platinum membership are rarely fulfilled when this store is consistently "out of stock" of almost all samples offered via email. I am very frustrated that the last 4 times I've been in the store they haven't had the sample products, even within a day of receiving the email offer. They claim that there are no substitutions and make no effort to find a solution for customers like myself who are frustrated with this "platinum perk". As a customer, either permitting substitutions or getting in a higher quantity of stock of the free samples seems like a necessary next step for this store and others that seem to consistently have the same issues (Altoona). read more

5-stars for Lesa at Ulta hair Salon, 3-stars for the salon itself. I went in for a simple haircut and left with confidence and much better hair than I expected. I have long, straight, thick hair that is coarse at the ends. I had a lot of split ends and high hopes of bangs that did not suck. It's always scary to get bangs cut in. I've had all sorts of terrible bangs done in salons, such as long side bangs that never really worked sat right and bangs that weren't right for my oval head shape. So with much apprehension, I told Lesa that I wanted bangs but not little girl bangs halfway up my forehead and not long side bangs that are high maintenance. She knew what to do. She took her time and slowly cut off little by little until I was happy with the length. She gave me round bangs. I can part my bangs to either side or wear them straight down now, without feeling like I am my seven-year-old-self with crooked choppy straight bangs cut by my mom. Usually after haircuts I feel like I look terrible and the first thing I do is throw my hair up in a ponytail and a lot of bobby pins. But not this time. I came prepared with the bobby pins, but I left with my hair down. I wore those bangs all around State College that day. And I still love them. Lesa took her time, and she was very skilled and experienced with my hair type. I also appreciate that she did not try to fill the time with idle mindless fake chatter like so many salons do, yet she was friendly and had a good attitude. I highly recommend Lesa. Price-wise, Ulta had a deal for 15% off your first-time in the salon, so I paid around $27. I looked around State College for good deals at salons that had good reviews before deciding on Ulta, and I will be going back to Lesa. Separately, I'd give the salon itself 3 stars. I have two complaints. The baths you rest your neck on to get your hair washed are really hard and hurt my neck to sit there, and secondly, they use hair products on you that are chemically loaded and toxic (with fragrance/parfum, propylparaben, retinyl palmitate, BHT, etc. as according to the ewg.org/skindeep database and Ulta's website). I am big on minimizing harmful chemicals in cosmetics and all products that I use, but at the salon I just let them use whatever they normally do. I followed up with my Shea Moisture shampoo and conditioner and organic jojoba oil like I normally do. So Ulta salon in State College, pad that shampoo bath with a neck towel and offer to use products without harmful chemicals... and thanks for Lesa! read more

This store has a great selection of products from a lot of prestige cosmetic brands. It's great to have one in State College, however I give it 4 stars because they don't usually have great rewards for customers, and coupons usually only apply to cheaper brands read more

They can't do ethnic hair. I called them because I needed my hair straightened last minute, and I figured a corporate chain salon would have some experience with all kinds of hair. When I called, I was given misleading information. "Why yes, we have experienced stylists working that can do your natural, ethnic hair!" "Yes, we have the styling tools needed for your type of hair!" False. It felt like a 3 year old was playing in my hair for 2 hours, trying to complete a 45 minute task. Not only did they not have the correct blow dryer I asked about over the phone, but they didn't even know how to comb through my hair correctly while applying heat. After I was told I wasn't going to be charged for the service, I noticed that all of my ends were all over the floor. I lost almost an inch of hair. The ends that were left were fried and in knots. I had to brush it myself at the end just to put it in a bun. This complaint is going straight to corporate. read more

I visited the State College, PA Ulta Salon for the first time in order to get my hair done for engagement photos. I had a coupon for 30% off first time customers for blowouts. When I got to my appointment, the girl who looked up my appointment was the one who took me back to get my hair done (there were only two girls there). After it was finished I went to check out at the front desk with my coupon and they looked at me like I was crazy. The girl had to walk back to the salon to talk with the stylist and when she returned told me that apparently the girl who did my hair was a "Senior Designer" and my coupon didn't apply. I wasn't given a choice of stylist nor did I know she was one and I wouldn't have chosen a "Senior designer" if I knew my coupon didn't apply. So I ended up paying $47 + tip for a "Go Out Blowout" that didn't even look like anything was done to my hair. It didn't even last until my pictures which were an hour later. I am very dissappointed in not only the service but the deceiving coupon offer. I really thought of using ULTA for all of my upcoming bridal events because it's so convenient but I will definately not be returning after this experience. read more
