My first visit to Bennelong saw me dine here at lunchtime on a busy Saturday afternoon. What a wonderful experience I had! From the moment I was seated to the time I left I was treated extremely respectfully, by gracious and friendly staff, the food was nothing short of exquisite and the views overlooking the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay are spectacular! Located on the first floor of the Sydney Opera House, this is one restaurant that should be on everyone's "to do" list! I know that I shall certainly be returning again! I can't thank the staff enough for making my visit as pleasant as it was, and my compliments must definitely go to the kitchen staff for preparing such magnificent food! Bennelong's location in the Sydney Opera House creates an atmosphere that is truly tough to beat. The soaring space and captivating views leave a lasting impression. Though spots like this often conjure memories of past tourist traps, Bennelong is highly regarded and recognized as a hated venue. The cuisine truly delivers, as we found dishes to be tasty and beautifully presented. A solid cocktail and wine list compliment. Bennelong is a must visit restaurant in Sydney. Atmosphere: - Magical space amidst incredible architecture, gigantic windows unto the harbor, and intimate lighting. - Nearly every seat provides clear views outside. - While upscale, the space is not stuffy. - Smart casual dress seems appropriate, though formal dress is not out of place. Food In the main space, diners are served a three course a la carte menu (145 AUD). The modern Australian menu tends to skew heavily toward seafood in entrees (only one vegetarian and no meat selections), while mains lean the other way. We found the food to be of very high quality in both taste and presentation. We enjoyed: -Slow Cooked Pork Belly (southern squid, pea greens, smoked broth, kombu crackling): Quite unique and delicious. -Salad of Spring Peas (stracciatella, smoked almonds, rye crumble, asparagus & tomato chutney): Great presentation, but the peas were actually least prominent ingredient. Could have used some bolder flavors. -Confit of Maremma Duck (kumquat & kampot pepper marmalade, slow cooked carrots, nasturtiums): Amazing! Executed perfectly, duck and perfect temperature and kumquat marmalade was stunningly balanced. Great presentation. Must order! - Roast Wagyu Rump Cap (cipollini & buckwheat pudding, horseradish emulsion): Ordered on waitress's recommendation. More simplistic and classic in concept, but flavorful and with a few twists. Nicely done. - Cherry Jam Lamington: Sumptuous texture and delicious cherry flavor, nice treat to conclude. - Australian Cheese: While the selections were solid, presentation lacked with no accompaniments other than crackers, some of which were not conducive. Beverage Interesting selection of cocktails, though some are at the higher end price-wise. The Worlds Apart (calle 23 blanco tequila, mezcal, campari, elderflower, lime, mandarin - 24 AUD) was balanced and refreshing with a classic flavor profile, while the Top The Cherry (yoshinogawa yuzu, cherry heering, mirabelle xocolatl mole bitters, sparkling wine - 24 AUD) had more exotic flavors that may not appeal to some. Wine list has an array of worldly options across price points, including a number of higher end options also proliferate. We liked our 2013 Two Hands Bella's Garden Shiraz (143 AUD). With dessert and cheese, the Rockford P.S. Marion Tawny (19 AUD) was a solid selection. Service -Waitress and mister d' were both personable and welcoming. Table service was generally good, but with occasional lags toward the end. -Somm seemed miffed we did not consult him in our selection and basically served our wines all night without a word uttered. Nice service, nice food, and nice ambience but all within expectation. Overall you do leave pretty satisfied so all in all a good experience. The entrees were quite nice and I did enjoy the pumpkin, however surprisingly the pig belly was not as exciting. The seeds and grains provided a contrast to the soft pumpkin which made a winning combo, but I would have liked more pumpkin less grains. Mains were definitely the highlight with the fish and beef being enjoyed by us both. I can't comment much on the beef but apparently it pulls away so easily and melts in your mouth. Safe to say it was a hit. I found the fish to be equally as delightful in a delicious broth but it did have fish bone despite meaning to be boneless. Even the sides were great and easily demolished. No plate left the table without being completely cleared first. As much as the desserts are probably their most well-known, neither of us have much of a sweet tooth so unfortunately it wasn't as enjoyable as the entrée or main. The pavlova is something that you should definitely try at least once. So pretty and quite nice but was just slightly too sweet for us. If you love sweet things or desserts in general, you will most likely be a huge fan! The lamington was probably more to our liking but very rich. Both mocktails, tea-groni and pink grapefruit spritzer, were delicious also! Everything was perfect from Start to finish. The Staff were so professional with a personal friendly touch. We requested a table by the window and got one of the best on offer. It was smiles all round as we were offered a wonderful selection of drinks to choose from. As time went on smiles turned into lots of laughs and heaps of fun as the banter rolled along. Then the reason for the afternoon ....... fun memories and great food ..... and it just got better. I'm not going to spoil anything involving food as I feel it maybe a seasonal offering as well ...... but the choices on offer were impressive, the presentation was superb and finished with such delicate flavors that make you feel like you never tasted anything like it. To enjoy, immerse yourself in a deep culinary adventure will cost a few dollars ....... we were carried away in the moment and had to laugh when the bill finally arrived 3 hours later. We came here for our mum's birthday. It was an exquisite meal in a special location. Although it was a bit noisy we enjoyed the setting and atmosphere. They offer a 3 course menu for $130 which includes complimentary sides for dinner. The plating of the food are like works of art. The flavours were amazing too. Highlights of our meals included the Butter Poached Quail which was melt in the mouth and the macadamia added an interesting taste and texture to the dish. The Macleay Valley Suckling Pig was so tender and all the components of the dish went well together. It was time for dessert and wow! They first brought out a birthday cupcake with a candle for mum. It was a thoughtful touch and noticed quite a few tables celebrating birthdays tonight. All three plates looked fantastic. We were not disappointed by any of them. The Pavlova looked like the sails of the Opera House and was soft and fluffy. The Cherry Jam Lamington was a sight to behold with the plumes of smoke surrounding it when brought out. The coconut shards are beautiful and melt in the mouth. The cake was wonderful. Creme Caramel Vs Mille-Feuille was an explosion of different textures and flavours. It was the creaminess of the creme caramel, the crunch of the shards of caramel, and the coolness of the ice cream. Was this the BEST meal I've ever had? Probably not. But how often do you have an opportunity to have a lovely meal with great service in a famous landmark on the other side of the world?! And the food was pretty dang tasty! For those who are even thinking of coming here and are not local to the area, book your table here before you book your other plans! They have very limited availability so snagging a table early on is your best bet. Keep in mind that the restaurant only appears to serve fixed price menu, so for travelers, make sure you have enough AUD or a good travel card you can use. As there were no dinner reservations available, we booked a Sunday lunch reservation about a month out. The restaurant space is just simply stunning. In the main dining room, there are curved and angular floor to ceiling windows looking out onto the water and the Harbour Bridge. The furniture and seating itself is very simplistic, but there were ornate pillars and ceiling fixtures at every corner. From the moment we were seated, the service was very attentive. Water and drink refills were frequent, with someone always checking in on us. The menu had a variety of meat and seafood options, with an option to go for a 2 or 3 course meal at lunch - choosing one item from entrees, mains, and desserts. We ended up going for one 2 course and one 3 course, with a dessert to share between the two of us. From plating, to aroma, to tableside finishes, everything was done to perfection. What we ordered from the April 2017 menu: Entrees: grilled tasmanian octopus, royal red prawns and broth of rock cod --- BOTH absolutely divine and great choices for seafood lovers. The octopus was tender and flavorful with very complimentary sides, and the prawns with the broth was enveloped with the taste of the sea without all the fishiness. Mains: steamed cod with sea scallop and congee, grass fed lamb with onions, eggplant cream, and capers --- The lamb was tender and actually tasted like a hybrid of lamb and beef. This cod with sea scallop was definitely an Asian-inspired dish. When reading from the menu, I had envisioned that the scallops would be separate from the cod. Instead, it was baked onto the cod with slivers of scallops underneath. Ultimately, it was all steamed, so it was missing that scallop sear and some of the texture which I thought I would be getting. Dessert: pavlova --- because when in Australia, you get the dessert that originated (maybe?) there! The most spectacular part of this dish was the presentation - delicate marshmallow'd meringue with slivers of sails resembling the Opera House. The marshmallow, meringue, and passion fruit filling was all the same consistency, so it definitely left something to be desired texture-wise, but that was to be expected for a pavlova. We had a peek of the chocolate cake at the table next to us, which looked like a great option. The meal also came with complimentary bread and house-churned butter to start, and sides of buttered potatoes and dressed greens with the mains. Simple and satisfying. It's pricey, but for a special occasion or when entertaining guests from out of town...I couldn't think of a more perfect spot. It's fancy French fare in an exquisite harbour front location inside the Opera House. Guillaume does not seem like the type of place that you can stroll into without a booking. It actually seems like the type of spot where the maître d' might giggle at you condescendingly if you tried. But to our lucky surprise the staff at Guillaume are EXTREMELY LOVELY. When we found out the bar wasn't option, the host quickly checked his books and said that he was pretty sure there would be a cancellation in 30 minutes and that he would be able to seat us. We had a bottle of wine at Opera Bar while we waited and sure enough...30 minutes later we were seated at the best window-front table in the house. DO NOT MISS the Scampi Turban. read more

This was the highlight of our dining in Sydney. Simply a magical environment with amazing food and ambience. We were seated and then greeted by the sommelier, who provided a solid wine recommendation. There was a long delay before tracking down a server, but the ambience was so incredible that we didn't care and were happy to sit there enjoying our wine! Once we found our server, he apologized profusely (I don't believe it was his fault) and the service was very attentive from that point on. Standout dishes for me were the yellowfin sashimi and wagyu rump cap. However, there were so many intriguing options that if we would have had another night left we probably would have tried to go back again! We had the tasting menu ($195 pp), which consisted of: 1. Amuse bouche (some kind of pumpkin soup) 2. Yellowfin tuna - basil, soy, mustard seed 3. Royale - peas, speck, truffle 4. Scallops - lemon, watercress, Sterling caviar 5. Rouget - prawn, mussel, clam, capsicum, leek, potato, rouille 6. Tortellini - beetroot, goat's curd, walnut, beurre noisette 7. Tajima wagyu beef (rib-eye, 500-day grain-fed, F1 marble grade 9+) - shimeji mushroom, spinach, shallot, merlot 8. Champagne grapefruit granita - crème Chantilly 9. Passionfruit souffle - passionfruit sorbet 10. Petits fours (macarons, jellies, madeleines and various other things) My favourite dishes were the yellowfin tuna (dish 2), the royale (dish 3), the tortellini (dish 6) and the wagyu beef (dish 7). This place would have gotten five stars from me were it not for the sickly sweetness of the passionfruit souffle (dish 9). I have never had a more sugary dessert in my life. I felt a little sick after eating it. The passionfruit flavour was overwhelming and I think the flavour of the souffle should have been balanced out by a sorbet flavour other than passionfruit. To be honest I would have preferred some kind of chocolate dessert at the end of the meal. I saw some chocolate tarts being brought out to other tables that had ordered a la carte, and they looked fantastic. Service was mixed - some waiters were very jovial and laid-back while others seemed to take themselves a bit too seriously. There was one waiter in particular (Vladimir Putin lookalike) who was rather snooty and self-important. read more

Scallops were amazing, Wagyu was fantastic. One course really let them down though. The fruit soup was every bit as revolting as it sounds. Wine: The wines were all lovely. It was great to have a choice between French and Australian wine. The sommelier was very knowledgable and friendly Service: Unfortunately this is what lets them down the most. 4 out of the 8 courses we were served, we had to wait for the matching wines to reach the table, whilst watching our food get cold. They did apologise for this, but at nearly $300 a head, we really did expect a lot better. The staff were nice enough, we just found that they were really hard to flag down and not very attentive. There is no getting away from it.. this is a pricy place to eat. But the food is worth every cent. The wine list is very expensive but, again, comes to you with care knowledge and enthusiasm. I had heard a lot of great things about this restaurant so was super excited to find out we were going here on Friday night for a family celebration! I only found out midday and was already at work so I didn't necessarily dress appropriately (I was wearing jeans) so if you're coming here know it's a little fancier than that. We were having an early dinner so were seated with the pre-theatre menu. I'm not sure if they have a full menu, but this menu had a 2-course or 3-course option and there are only 3 options to choose from per course. My fiance's family is fully of picky eaters, but they were able to find at least 2 things they wanted. It's definitely not simple food though! I believe they serve everyone with some toast, truffle butter, and proscuitto to start out with. I also think there is an optional oyster course, but I missed this because I was coming a bit late from work. I did try the truffle butter and toast and to be perfectly honest it wasn't amazing, but it was good. I had the wagyu beef tartare for my first course. It was delicious. Served with an egg yolk (yay) and had the perfect mixture of crunchy mixed in with the beef. I can't remember what the crunch was, but this course was really good. For my second course, I had the snapper. I'm not usually a fish person but decided to go for it and I was pleasantly surprised. The fish was well prepared, covered with a umami butter sauce, and had greens and turnips on top. Overall it was really good and my wine was good too :) Definitely worth it for the food and for a pre-theatre treat. read more

Beautiful 3 course meal with impeccable presentation. Certainly a place for special occasion. They knew it was my birthday, I don't know know how. Felt instantly special and surprised by the wishes and attention I received the moment I walked in. It's a Thursday night and it was packed. I was contemplating between wagyu tatare and pork belly & scallop for entree but glad I went for the later. It's beautifully light and balanced and the combination of ingredients the chef put onto the dish was a surprise and tantalising. The duck breast was pink, soft and chewy. The chocolate from across the water was elegantly presented, with a dash of chocolate presented as a final touch. The creme caramel vs Mille-fueille was probably my preferred choice which tasted like little ice cream popcorn that melts in the mouth. read more

This place falls short of five stars for a couple of reasons that I will get into details later. The setting and decor is dramatic and dimly lit they have large viewing windows. We dined here as a party of four (including our kids) for pre theater dinner. We ordered from their two course menu and kids from their kids menu. My fish dish was not expertly prepared it was overcooked and dry. Our meal comes with desserts. It took the wait staff a very long time to clear our dishes after we were done and to wait for the desserts. I was watching my time closely as the wait staff did not seem to value our sense of time and urgency to make the opera performance in time. I decided to step out and check in our large bags at the opera coat check to save time. Alas I did not get time to enjoy my dessert. Next time think twice before paying $$$$ for slow service and mediocre food before a performance. read more

We stopped by Guillaume At Bennelong to get some drinks and the bar and tapas because we hadn't planned ahead and made a reservation, and none were available. Unfortunately, a group had completely booked out the bar area, but the matre d found us a table and said it would be fine if we just ordered from the tapas menu in the main dining area. The tapas were all delicious, and they make a really good manhattan. Service was reasonably attentive. Can't comment on the full-menu dining experience, but I'd definitely recommend some tapas and cocktails. read more

We wanted our coffee with dessert and it took nearly 20 minutes just to get our caffeine fix... The only reason why I would give this place 3 stars is because of the venue. Although the chocolate souffle was really good but I was so full after 2 starters and an entree I couldn't finish it. I've experienced much better food, better service elsewhere. We had to experience eating at Bennelong prior to attending an evening performance at the Opera House, and it did not disappoint. The staff is very professional and informative. The pre-theatre menu does have limited options, but the choices were so well described and sounded delicious, so I didn't feel like that was a negative. The views of the Harbour and Sydney Bridge are breathtaking, and the architecture inside the restaurant added an extra layer of romance to the entire experience. I sampled the pork belly, which was cooked to perfection. Then I had the steak, cooked medium rare. It was so tender and moist, I wanted to order another one just to savor it longer. The butter noodles on the kids menu was also delicious, and they gave special attention to my little guy the entire meal, so he was having a great time. I recommend scheduling a full 2 hours prior to your performance time, as that seemed to be the perfect amount of time and didn't leave me feeling rushed. read more

I had high expectations coming to Guillaume at Bennelong considering this was Guillaume Brahimi's primary domain and also because of the incredible location inside the Opera House. In terms of the menu it certainly did not disappoint. Both my scallop entree and beef tenderloin main were cooked really well, with the later being especially good. Delicious. But in terms of service, this was a very disappointing experience. We were in an awkward table in the corner, so the wait staff kinda forgot about us. Frustrated with the amount of time it took to take our order, we got the attention of another waiter and he told us he was unable to take our order but he'll get our allocated waiter right away. But he never came, despite a lot of wait staff standing around looking at the other tables and seemingly not doing much. Looking at them, they didn't seem particular happy or friendly either, which is unusual for a fine dining restaurant. Then we requested the sommelier and he took a long time too. But I must concede his recommendation was quite good. When it came to dessert, a course I never really decline, we truly had enough of the service and we decided to get the bill instead. This took a long time too. What was going on this particular night?? All three of us were in agreement that it was unlikely that we would return because we expected a lot more, considering the prices we pay for fine dining. However I hear Guillaume at Bennelong has a new maitre d' so maybe the service has improved since we were there last. Hmmm, maybe I'll give it another chance but for now I can only give it a three, which purely reflects the food and the view. read more

Great place to celebrate my birthday with my mom. Amazing atmosphere, great hospitality, amazing food preparation at the cured and cultured counter. Love the amazing experience. Had four dishes with my mom plus one glass of rosé, they also provided a cupcake for the special night. Had to go to see a play in the opera house so dinner started at 1730. But I think my expectations were too high for Bennelong to deliver. I have had had better dining experiences at places like Uccello and plenty of other great restaurants in Sydney. The price point is really good for the high quality food. For entrée, we had Lady Elliot Bug and Wheat Noodles with Pork/Squid. Both were great, but the noodles looked and tasted amazing...a must order! For main, we had Holmbrae Duck & King George Whiting. The Holmbrae Duck was hands down the best dish of the lunch!!! I want to preface this by saying my wife and I had the pre theater menu so this isn't a representation of their full menu. Going in I figured there would be a plethora of options to choose from since I looked up the original menu online, and was surprised when I arrived at the restaurant that our only option was the pre-theater menu which had a much more limited selection. The cocktail options were pretty good I have to say. Suggestions range from the Scottish Siesta(my fav), to the Botanical Gardens(very smooth and considered by my wife a wonderful interpretation of a dirty martini) and the Clouds of passion cocktails. The wife had the butter poached quail as an app and the duck as the main. She thought both were fantastic, but small. The catch of the day (the Nannygai) was my main and it was delicious but I was yearning for more on my plate. Dessert was just ok but I do not recommend. The presentation was definitely the best part of the meal as the portions were tiny considering the cost, and view wasn't amazing, although the interior of the restaurant was breathtaking. Our bill came out to 400 bucks and we definitely left empty-stomached before a 3hr opera which was not ideal- we were lucky the opera singers voices drowned out the sound of our stomachs growling. It's a great place for a restaurant and it's a shame that this place doesn't use its full potential. No doubt it is important point on the list for every tourist coming to Sydney. Unfortunately it's not the place that will attract you to return, unless you want to celebrate Wedding anniversary ;-) this place lacks vibe, ambience and soul. I asked what vegan options you offer, and was told "we don't provide options in advance just let us know at least 48 hours in advance and vegan food will be served" I told them I am booking 4 weeks in advance, if I could have the chef or someone call me back to discuss options would be greatly appreciated. I was abruptly told NO, you will not have a choice you will get what you get on the night. I was shocked that a restaurant of this level located at the Sydney iconic Opera House is not willing to provide me with dietary options in advance and the ladys' abrupt tone was all too hard for the Bennelong. Well if it is too hard for the Bennelong in the 21st century it is too hard for my party to dine at the Bennelong. There are several great options in Sydney. I have never done a yelp review, but after going to this place, I had to. The view is beautiful and the service is good. But that is it. Food and drinks are over priced, not that tasty, and we left hungry and sober. There were even gnats at our table. After paying, $220, we had to go grab a sandwich downstairs at the Opera Kitchen. 5 stars for the view. The menu is prix fixe and the options do not have a wide range. They do not offer a salad choice and will not accommodate any requests off the menu. I choose the Wagyu medium and it came out under done. So my husband and I ended up eating our dinner at separate times. I ordered the Pavlova for my dessert and it tasted like they did not use a meringue but it tasted like straight up marshmallow. I know it is difficult to make but don't have it on the menu if you are unable to execute it. None of this is a big deal unless you are being charged $145 per person. For that price I expect a fine dining experience. Prix fixe is usually an upscale option. Here it means you will enjoy what you are served... like a business luncheon, just that you don't know anyone else. read more

Not cheap but great food, great service and stunning location with views over the best of Sydney. All courses were beautifully prepared & plated and sensibly portioned. Perfect precursor to a show at the Opera House and worth the expense. read more
