I hired John of Bennett Building to do two jobs for me, neither of which was finished.
I told John in the beginning that we needed two skylight shafts insulated and three broken collar ties replaced, and I sent him photos of all.
The cracked collar ties had been flagged and photographed first by a home inspector and then by a structural engineer, requiring that we have them replaced in order to sell our house.
After his younger brother had done the work, I went into the attic to check it. I found that *only one* skylight shaft had been insulated and that *only two* broken collar ties had been replaced -- one of them with a shorter board placed on a slant, as tho' they didn't have one that was long enough.
I called John, and he said he thought I'd hired him to insulate just one skylight shaft (!) ... even tho' I'd sent him *photos of both* and he clearly wrote in his bid that they would insulate *"the skylights that are not currently insulated."*
I also told him about the collar-tie repair being incomplete.
He rather impatiently said he'd send his brother to complete the work -- not admitting to any mistake, but implying that he wanted to avoid a bad review.
His brother returned in a few days and went to the attic to do something, while I was tied up at work. As he left, I quickly thanked him for returning -- not able to check the work at that point, but assuming he'd done it.
Later when I went up into the attic to check, the second skylight shaft was indeed insulated, but the collar ties were still just as they were!
I texted John about it, and he insisted that his brother had done the work, that I'd told his brother everything was fine (!?) and that he would do nothing more.
So I'm left with finding someone else replace the collar ties that I hired and paid him to do.
I was so explicit in sending John the photos of the *two* skylight shafts to be insulated and the *specific collar ties* that *two different inspectors* had flagged for replacement. Yet he apparently paid no attention.
Bottom line is that his is a *very young guy*, and not as careful, responsible or respectful as you want! I don't recommend. read more
