Decent local diner I stopped by Benson's around 6:30 after a busy day. Plenty of parking, not crowded inside. The place is old but clean and well-kept. I sat at the bar and was served quickly. Ordered the special--chicken and dumplings. It was fine, nothing remarkable. While I ate, another customer sat down and ordered "the usual," which suggests Benson's has a loyal crowd. eat at your own risk, if you like gray orime rib, wait staff that ignores and no management skills! We have been here MANY times and after tonight will never go back! they offer prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays and ask how you want it cooked. we asked for medium rare and what we got was gray. one was all gray the other had a little pink, so we kindly asked for a different plate (something we NEVER DO) and a waitress took it back to the kitchen to return with the same piece of meat staying it was gray due to au jus sauce used when cooking, and walked away. I ate 1/2 of mine which was COLD and my boyfriend ate most of the total gray one which was also cold. ( as we left we realized we must have had reheated pieces from Friday night prime rib as two other prime ribs on a table were exactly what we have had there in the past and expected again. ) when the waitress came with our check and asked how everything was and we told her terrible , the meat was gray and it was cold. she said sorry and walked away leaving the check on the table. We were not offered another piece of prime rib, not offered and alternate dinner, no manager came to acknowledge or apologize, nor were we offered a small discount or free coffee and dessert for the cold gray meal. poor customer service, poor management, and we will NEVER GO BACK! read more

Now, maybe I'm biased, because I work here, but I don't think there's many places around that serve food at as fair a price, or as delicious as it is at Benson's. The servers are all incredibly polite, and all of the waitresses always give their all to make sure you enjoy your meal. Frankly, I love the vibe in the dining room. Very cozy, very rural, as you'd expect from a family restaurant out in the sticks. I've always loved going out to Benson's for lunch or dinner, and they have THE best breakfast in the area. Located at the corner of Routes 22 & 67 (West), Benson's is a decent local family diner serving up homestyle American cooking for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As you enter the parlor, there is a U-shaped counter where the locals sit and chat and there's also dining room seating on the right (seat yourself). For tall people, just be careful since the ceilings are fairly low. The place has a classic homey feel which is decorated nicely. The breakfast menu is served anytime offering eggs, omelets, pancakes, waffles, French toast, meats, hash browns, muffins, and more. The lunch/dinner menu offers appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, grinders, steak, chicken, seafood, pasta, comfort food (ham, turkey, liver & onions pork), salad bar, and desserts (ice cream, pies, puddings, cakes). Prime Rib is served on Fridays-Sundays while it lasts! The food is not fancy and the prices are reasonable with breakfast items under $6 and complete dinners for $7-$18. I sat myself in the main dining room and the place was filled with a lot of older graying folks. I had the special which was Honey Dijon BBQ Chicken Breast ($9.95) served with potato, vegetable, bread, and salad bar. The salad bar is small and offers lettuce, garnishes, dressings, pasta salad and tuna macaroni salad. The basket of bread with butter was served warm. The dinner arrived in about 10 minutes. The chicken was very tender and juicy. The mashed potatoes with gravy and cole slaw were decent tasting, standard diner fare. I passed on dessert since I was planning to grab an ice cream cone across the parking lot at Benson's Dairy Bar (seasonal). The service was friendly and attentive. I would recommend this place for a good homestyle meal, if you're traveling through this neck of the woods. read more

Nice little diner/restaurant. We came here for brunch on a Sunday and they fit our table of 6 easily. Everyone seemed to enjoy their brunch options. The breakfast sandwich would have been better with less bread/more meat. I had the waffles with strawberries and whipped cream and it was delicious. Benson's is a great local diner located near Cambridge NY. I went here for the first time on Sunday for breakfast (which they serve all day) and was very happy. You can sit where eve you like when you arrive and service is prompt and courteous. Our waitress Karen was attentive and patient as we had a group eight including two small children. Food is very very good and you get a good size portion. For breakfast I went with the Garbage Omelet and it was DELICIOUS! My daughter went with a strawberry waffle and she loved it. The home-made cream on top was incredible! (Yes, I took some when she wasn't looking.) Definitely not cool whip or something out of a can. Building is somewhat dated but that didn't matter because the food and the service is great. Prices were reasonable. The omelet was just under $7 and came with two pieces of toast and hash browns that were cooked perfectly. Coffee is very good as well. I would highly recommend Benson's to anyone looking for small diner with good service and delicious food. Haven't had anything but breakfast at the diner but if it is as good as breakfast...oh man. I will be sure to come back and see for myself. They also run a small ice cream /dairy bar in a separate building which has tons of flavors to choose from and efficient service as well. A cute little roadside place but we were disappointed. Not only do they charge extra for lettuce and tomato on their veggie burgers, they are not clear about their pricing upfront. After a somewhat lacking burger and barbecued pork sandwich, we decided to get ice cream, but we were shocked to be charged $10 for a flurry that was listed at 5.95. Apparently, extra toppings were two dollars each, but that was not made clear on the menu board or by the cashier. A very over priced treat to be sure! And no apology for the lack of clarity. We have been to Benson's a few times recently. Most of what we ordered was pretty good. This last time not so much. I ordered the Hot Turkey Sandwich. It was awful. First of all the bread was soaked in gravy to the point that it was soggy and very unappetizing. The amount of turkey was disappointing. I will never order that again. In fact I might not go there again. There were two women seated across from us. When they were leaving I realized that they had a dog with them. There is no reason for a dog to be in a restaurant. It unsanitary and must be again some health code. Who wants to sit a seat that some sat on. read more

Stopped to get lunch at 1P.M. On a Saturday thinking I could get salad bar with my lunch or dinner entree but it wasn't set up yet which was a disappointment.. Service was extra slow considering there were only 5 or 6 tables in the place! We ordered a hot turkey sandwich which was Luke warm and didn't taste like it was made there. My husband got a turkey club and was asked if he would like fries or chips and a pickle, he said fries and was charged $11.95 instead of $8.95. I wouldn't mind if they told me it was extra and they were good but they weren't! Lesson learned, go back to Jeans in Hoosick Falls! read more

Benson's is a local staple. I have been to many different diners from here to California and you can't get a hot turkey sandwich that is any better than what you get here! Also, I don't like regular home fries and this is the only place that will deep fry them for you with no problem. Desserts and soups are home made and delicious. Also the dairy bar has the BEST soft serve vanilla ice cream around! Wait staff has worked there for a long time. They know 80% of people coming through the door. Gives it a great homey feel. Also, much to be said for a small diner that retains their staff for 20+ years! Owners are very involved in supporting local school/sports team. Restaurant is clean, always decorated for the season. I went to Benson's for the first time last night. What a hidden gem! Sure, it's a little outdated, but that's part of its charm. The staff was absolutely fantastic! Everyone was extremely friendly, and our waitress was able to strike that perfect balance where she was attentive, but not bothersome. The food is your standard diner fare, but it's done right. Our group consisted of four hungry guys, and we left satisfied. I will absolutely be returning, but with my family this time. Dinner at Benson's was an absolute pleasure! I visited this restaurant in Eagle Bridge with Mary Lou and Mel during a train hunt. The food and service were very good. I had the Nuns of Newskete Cheesecake, which was very good. We had dinner in addition to salad bar, but the next time, we will probably just do salad bar and dessert. read more

Where to go for dinner? Where to get great fish and chips? BENSON's! Living out of town for years, I had not been to Benson's for at least 14 years. Last Friday night the cravings for fish and chips were strong and a trip to Benson's fit the bill perfectly. We both ordered the $9.95 fish and chips. Just as they did years ago, the friendly waitperson still brings first to the table a basket of amazing home-made bread. Not long after arrives a plate with three or four good sized pieces of crispy battered haddock, a heap of tasty, meaty French fries and your choice of vegetable or coleslaw. Although dark in places, the fish did not have a fishy smell or taste and was one could tell it was fresh. All the items were hot, nothing came cold. The decor has changed little over the years, a heavy yet pleasant dose of country craft Americana of the type one might find at a craft bazaar hung on each wall. A horseshoe bar-type counter takes much of the first dining room space but the second and third rooms offer a great deal of seating. Outside there is plenty of parking but being mid- Winter I would have expected it to be de-iced a little more evenly. I worried a little for the elderly couple coming in shortly behind us but they arrived safely. The value of the meal is unbeatable, but the $2.50 glass of bottled tea was in my opinion priced kinda high. Overall, we were VERY pleased and now I can't wait to go back! Maybe Friday.... read more

This place is a staple in the Eagle Bridge community. The Friday/Saturday night line cook(Brady Sausville)is nothing short of superb when it comes to perfecting the art of cooking a beautiful slab of local grass fed beef to perfection. Funny story about Brady, he's a great baseball player who actually beat Herkimer. He's a winner and good at everything he does including his current investment internship with Northwestern Mutual. Do you want food that is second to none at a chain restaurant price? Well Benson's is where you want to be. Don't forget to ask for Chef Brady when you come in! read more

Can't wait for a reason to return to this charming downhome restaurant! The food is perfect and the prices are good enough that one has to figure a larger percentage in tip just to be fair. The staff was most accommodating when I had to wait a substantial time for my other party. The service was just right, attentive but never intrusive. The waitress was just a bit defensive when I asked about gluten-free, responding that they didn't have a separate menu, so I just smiled and said I didn't expect one but that sometimes it was necessary for waitstaff to check with the cook about ingredients and that sometimes the cook would be careful if s/he knew bread product crumbs were already on a certain grill. That seemed to set her at ease. But I think she was just anxious to provide good service. We wound up ordering omelets and it turned out you can just simply ask for whatever you want in them - don't have to follow the menu. The coffee was really quite tasty, I'm pleased to note. My cheddar and mushroom omelet was absolutely delicious, especially where the high-quality cheese had gotten fried a little. Must've used butter on the grill to make it taste that good. We wanted to sit inside the low-ceilinged restaurant to talk (and it was most pleasant with no problems with noise level despite quite a few patrons), but for those on the go, there's an ice cream stand in the same parking lot. I'm happy to mention that there are entrances from both Route 22 and 67 so there isn't any tricky maneuvering to get in or out. read more

WOW they got their "old" french fries back - !!! They had changed to the dipped-coated things, from the great just-plain-potato fries they always had before. The "dipped things" apparently are being hyped by the food service because supposedly they stay hotter at least until they get to the table. They are pre-dipped at the plant to coat them in some "batter" (I am still not sure what it is), then frozen and restaurants get them that way. (Unless you read the label on the bag, you don't know!) They are similar to the Burger King fries of some years ago (before satisfries) and are easily recognizable because they have little "pock marks" on them when they come to the table. I am allergic to something in the coating and cannot eat them. Not to mention when they get cold, I feel like I am eating a stick of hard grease. Anyway- not long ago, Benson's switched to the pre-dipped things, which I reviewed earlier. I had made up my mind to not even go to the restaurant any more (yes the fries are important) or if we did to just order absolute minimum to stop being hungry. At our last visit I told the waitress no fries and she explained they had dropped the coated things and gone back to their "old" fries ! So I happily ordered them along with a "better" sandwich. WOW - this has never happened before that I know of. I hope lots more people besides myself complained. read more

Two of us had a Friday night dinner, and it was just awful. BBQ chicken had no barbecue sauce, and must have been made from Grade F chicken. Chicken parm was so flat that even the canned sauce couldn't resurrect it. And the Parmesan cheese was some cheap substitute. We found this restaurant while taking a scenic drive through NY. Upon arrival the restaurants overall appearance and waitstaff were extremely inviting. Food is Great. All the comfort food you'd expect from a family restaurant. Service was excellent and the prices were more than reasonable. read more
